Google Glass 'prescription edition' makes a cameo at Google I/O

Google Glass 'prescription edition' makes a cameo at Google IO

Google I/O is always full of surprises, and we came across yet another elusive bit of hardware on the show floor today: Google Glass "prescription edition". No, it's not actually called that (we made up the name), but what you're looking at is definitely Glass that's been neatly integrated with a pair of prescription glasses -- in fact, it looks a lot like the version of Glass that Google recently mentioned on its blog. We don't really know anything else about this device, but we've reached out to Google for comment. Is this a custom design built by combining Google Glass Explorer Edition with off-the shelf eyewear? Is this a Glass prototype that's designed specifically for people who wear prescription spectacles? Share your thoughts in the comments and don't forget to check out the gallery below.

Update: Google's confirmed it's a prototype the company's experimented with that uses the same software as the Explorer Edition but slightly different hardware on the outside.

Obama gets break from scandals to push jobs and economy in Baltimore

After a week filled with controversy and criticism, President Barack Obama leaves town Friday for the second stop on his "Middle Class Jobs & Opportunity Tour." The trip, previously scheduled, takes him to Baltimore, Md., where he will press his economic agenda.

Obama, who will tour a Baltimore elementary school, a manufacturer and a community center, plans to underscore White House efforts to boost the middle class, job growth and education.

During the president's visit to Ellicot Dredges, which manufactures dredges and dredging equipment, the president will announce in public remarks a presidential memorandum to modernize and streamline the federal infrastructure permitting process, according to a White House official. The proposal is designed to build on his pledge to boost the country's manufacturing industry and invest in U.S. infrastructure.

Adding potential controversy to his trip, the owner of Ellicott Dredges, Peter Bowe, shares the view of many congressional Republicans in support of the Keystone XL oil pipeline. Bowe testified before Congress on the issue Thursday. Obama has yet to announce a position on the pipeline?which will carry oil from Canada and the northern United States to the Gulf Coast?but faces pressure from environmentalists and others to reject the proposal.

Controversy over the pipeline has dogged the president on other unrelated trips.?During a fundraising swing in California last month, the fact that the event was being hosted by pipeline opponent Tom Steyer, a hedge fund billionaire and environmentalist, drew pipeline protesters who sought to draw attention to the issue.

Obama's visit to a Baltimore school will be linked to the president's proposal to create universal pre-kindergarten, which was outlined in his State of the Union address, and his community center visit will be tied to his Promise Zone budget proposal to identify and assist hard-hit communities, according to the White House.

Last week, on the tour's first stop, the president made a trip to Texas to announce manufacturing competitions.

As the president left town Friday, the House Ways and Means Committee on Capitol Hill grilled the ousted acting commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, Steven Miller, over recent revelations that the IRS targeted conservatives applying for tax-exempt status. After the allegations were confirmed Wednesday by the Treasury Department inspector general's report, Obama announced that Miller had been forced to resign.

That action came amid continued pressure on the administration to explain revisions made to talking points related to the 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya?to which the White House responded Wednesday by releasing those emails to the media?and controversy surrounding the Department of Justice's secret seizure of Associated Press reporters' and editors' phone records in the investigation of a national security leak.

U.S. regulator sets final rules for swaps trading

By Douwe Miedema

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The top U.S. derivatives regulator unveiled rules for swaps trading that could break open Wall Street's dominance of the $630 trillion (413.33 trillion pounds) market, yet contain important concessions to the industry.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is writing a host of new rules based on lessons learned from the 2007-09 financial crisis, which highlighted the opacity of derivatives and triggered a regulatory crackdown.

The rules for exchange-like platforms to trade swaps - which the commission is expected to vote on Thursday - will put an end to the bilateral trading between banks that was the norm before the crisis and which fuelled speculation and risk-taking.

"We will bring to this once-opaque market place the transparency that Congress and President Obama laid out," CFTC Chairman Gary Gensler said on a call with journalists.

The swaps market had modest beginnings in the 1980s, offering companies risk management tools, but rapidly started to attract speculators, causing it to mushroom out of sight of regulators in the following decades.

In an important nod to the industry - which is dominated by big banks such as Citigroup Inc , Bank of America Corp and JPMorgan Chase & Co - the CFTC will continue to allow swaps deals to be negotiated over the telephone.

Derivative brokers such as ICAP PLC , GFI Group Inc and Tullett Prebon PLC - who sign up for the bulk of trading between banks - had lobbied hard to retain so-called voice-broking, the core of their business.

The rules for the new platforms, called Swap Execution Facilities (SEF), were one of the last remaining building blocks in the CFTC's rules, part of the Dodd-Frank overhaul of the financial industry after the crisis.

The regulator has already sketched out how clearing houses need to stand between buyers and sellers of swaps to reduce risk and prevent market panic, and has adopted extensive requirements for data reporting.

Another compromise in the rules for SEFs was the minimum amount of quotes that a prospective client needs to get before entering a swap deal, a requirement that is aimed at bringing more transparency in the market.

The rules set a minimum of three quotes in so-called request-for-quote trading systems after a one-year phase-in period in which the minimum number of quotes is two. The CFTC had initially proposed a minimum of five quotes.

Critics of the industry had said the lower the number, the smaller the move away from bilateral trading.

The CFTC also determined the minimum size for large trades that may be reported with a delay - so-called block trades - so that buyers and sellers don't immediately show their hand and sway the market to their own disadvantage.

Using that rule, up to 14 percent of the market for interest rate swaps and credit default swaps would be counted as block trades in an initial phase-in period, after which it would drop to between 5 percent and 10 percent.

The commission's five members - three Democrats and two Republicans - are expected to vote on the proposals in a public hearing on Thursday, starting at 10 a.m. (4:00 p.m. British time).

JANA Partners reveals stakes in Zynga, Groupon

By Alistair Barr and Svea Herbst-Bayliss

BOSTON (Reuters) - JANA Partners, a leading activist hedge fund firm run by Barry Rosenstein, has taken a liking to two of the most beaten-up technology stocks.

JANA, which oversees more than $4 billion in U.S. stock holdings, disclosed stakes of 24.6 million Zynga Inc class A shares and 21.9 million Groupon Inc class A shares in regulatory filings on Wednesday.

The positions represent just over 3 percent of the companies' outstanding shares. The Groupon stake was worth $134 million as of the end of March, while the Zynga holding was valued at $86 million, according to the filings.

Zynga shares rose 1.6 percent to $3.39 in afternoon trading, after gaining more than 7 percent earlier in the day. Groupon edged up 1.2 percent to $6.97, after achieving a nine-month high of $7.38 earlier on Wednesday.

Groupon, the world's largest daily deal company, and Zynga, a leading social game developer, went public in 2011 at lofty valuations, but their share prices have slumped since then amid concern about slowing growth at both companies.

Zynga's initial public offering priced at $10, while Groupon's priced at $20.

JANA Partners, which often pressures the companies it invests in to change their business strategies or sell themselves, released its so-called 13-F filing Wednesday, which describes which U.S. stocks it owned at the end of the first quarter of 2013.

During the first quarter, the JANA Partners fund was up 6.1 percent. A spokesman for JANA declined to comment.

JANA's stakes are likely to be passive investments because Zynga and Groupon have dual-class share structures that give management tight control of the companies.

In Groupon's case, Executive Chairman Eric Lefkofsky, former Chief Executive Andrew Mason and director Bradley Keywell control more than half of the voting power through their ownership of class B shares in the company.

Zynga's stock price has been under pressure as investors react to its slow transformation into a gaming company that's focused on mobile devices such as smartphones, rather than desktop computers.

Groupon is undergoing a transformation too. The company is selling a lot more deals through smartphones and is listing longer-term deals in a searchable, online marketplace, a move away from its email roots.

Try These Great Internet Marketing Tips To Benefit You - Maynas Eric

It?s amazing to run a business, have a profit that appears unlimited, create a schedule for yourself and be your own boss. Internet marketing helps you do that, and here are some effective methods to assist your business in making more money.

Getting backlinks (links from other sites to yours) is an important part of Internet promotion. You should make it easy for other webmasters to do this by putting a prominent ?Link to Us? option on your site. Let people know you would appreciate it if they shared a link to your content on their site or if they shared your content on social networks.

You need to have a list of customers and addresses. Ask your customers if they would like to join your email list when they make a purchase, and add a form on your website to let them sign up. Once you have the mailing list, you can send out information about sales, promote certain items or even solicit feedback from customers.

TIP! Place ads for your business on high-traffic sites. The exposure this investment will bring makes the expense worthwhile.

Get your name noticed by advertising on websites that receive heavy traffic. This may be a big investment, but it can make a great big difference. Look for a site that gets lots of traffic, and this can help you get your name out there.

If you use images you should include a description. Search engines will determine how relevant your text is to searchable keywords. Good captions can help to improve your rank.

If you are using AJAX or Flash, do not use it very much. Although this may look great, and provides a flashy scene to your site, this is not something that helps your site get noticed by the search engines. If you want to employ Flash, use it sparingly and make sure you have plenty of other keywords and navigational tools available.

TIP! A great way to get customer feedback is to allow them to put ratings and reviews on your website. Not only can these reviews help you improve your products, but they allow potential customers to feel more confident in their purchasing decision.

Be sure to keep statistics that are detailed. This information should encompass traffic, conversions, sales, refunds and anything else that is measurable. Detailed statistics help you when deciding on how to use Web marketing to your benefit.

Use this tip for your web marketing campaign. Use certain strategies to ensure your customers are aware that your site is secure. A privacy policy that is located in an easily accessible part of your website will do wonders to assure your readers. This will assure customers that their money will be handled safely, and that they should have no worries. They will be more likely to purchase what you?re selling if they know you are protecting their identity.

Being active in popular social media is an Web marketing must these days. Facebook fan pages will allow your customers the chance to post feedback others will see, this will get your name out there. Twitter is one of the best ways today to enjoy instant back and forth communication with your customers.

TIP! If your company website does not change very often, it may be a good idea to add a blog. Search engines look for new information and without it, your site can begin to be ranked lower.

Be sure you are up to date on all the services and features the Internet has to offer. Remember that the Internet is always expanding and changing, so you have to move fast to keep up with all the new innovations. Doing this will help you stay on the cutting edge of communication and merchandise presentation.

Make sure that your online business is listed with Google if you want to be noticed. Although there are other search engines, Google is hands down the most-used engine out there. A failure to advertise with Google might just mean your business will fail. You can list your business on directories such as Yahoo Maps, Google Places or Yelp, for instance.

Do not expect to make a lot of money right away. Without a doubt, the answer is yes! Always continue to be open to learning and adapting and evolving your goals to match your potential. Before you know it, the traffic will come pouring in.

TIP! Luck is not enough for your internet marketing venture, rather you should always work hard. You would be hard pressed to find a business that will attribute their success to the forces of fate.

Joint Chiefs chair cites military sex abuse crisis

(AP) ? The top U.S. military officer says women in uniform are losing confidence that the problem of sexual assault in the armed forces can be solved.

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, says that diminishing confidence is a crisis for the military.

Dempsey spoke about the problem Wednesday during a flight from Europe to Washington. His remarks were reported by the Pentagon's internal news service.

Dempsey suggests that a deepening of the sexual assault problem may be linked to the strains of war, though he says that's not an excuse.

A Pentagon report estimates that as many as 26,000 military members may have been sexually assaulted last year, based on survey results, out of 1.4 million in the services.

Clam fossils divulge secrets of ecologic stability

May 15, 2013 ? Clam fossils from the middle Devonian era -- some 380 million years ago -- now yield a better paleontological picture of the capacity of ecosystems to remain stable in the face of environmental change, according to research published today (May 15) in the online journal PLOS ONE.

Trained to examine species abundance -- the head counts of specimens -- paleontologists test the stability of Earth's past ecosystems. The research shows that factors such as predation and organism body size from epochs-gone-by can now be considered in such detective work.

Back 380 million years ago, New York was under the Devonian sea. Today, the fossils found in the rocks of this region have become well known for documenting long-term stability in species composition -- that is, the same species have been found to persist with little change over a 5 million year period. But research has found that species abundance in this ancient ecosystem went up and down, generating debate among paleontologists whether the fauna, as a whole, was also stable in terms of its ecology.

A team of Cornell, Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) -- an affiliate of Cornell -- and University of Cincinnati researchers revisited this debate by examining the ecological stability of the Devonian clam fauna.

"To understand how these species fared in the Devonian, you have to look at how they interacted with other species. There is more to ecology than just the abundance and distribution of species," said Gregory Dietl, Cornell adjunct professor, earth and atmospheric sciences, and a paleontologist at PRI.

The research, "Abundance Is Not Enough: The Need for Multiple Lines of Evidence in Testing for Ecological Stability in the Fossil Record," was written by Judith Nagel-Myers, paleontologist, PRI; John Handley, PRI; Carlton Brett, University of Cincinnati professor of geology; and Dietl.

The scientists took a new approach to testing ecological stability: In addition to counting numbers of clams, they examined repair scars on fossil clams that were left by the unsuccessful attacks from shell-crushing predators, and the body size of the clam assemblage as it yields biological information on the structure of food webs.

"Surprisingly, predation pressure and the body size structure of the clams remained stable, even as abundance varied," said Nagel-Myers. Possible mechanisms that explain the clam assemblage's stability are related to the dynamics of food webs -- the same mechanisms operating in food webs today. In one mechanism, predators switched between feeding on different clam species as their abundance varied.

The ancient Devonian ecosystem was more complex than previously thought, as it cautions scientists against basing conclusions on a single factor. Said Dietl: "Our results thus raise serious doubt as to whether ecological stability can be tested meaningfully, solely based upon the abundance of taxa, which has been the standard metric used to test for ecological stability in paleoecology."
