Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda
Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda has said that the government will review the tax exemptions procedures to ensure they do not add to costs for religious organisations and community institutions due to port surcharges.
The Premier made the remark in Dodoma over the weekend while speaking to residents who attended the ceremony to mark ten years of Village of Hope at Kisasa on the outskirt of Dodoma.
?The exemptions are being granted but we do not have special fund for these ?we give them tax relief but we also want to ensure that the Minister for Finance collects revenue ?there is a need to review the system in order to solve the problem of delays,? Pinda said.
Pinda was responding to a speech by the Village of Hope which requested the government to look into the possibility of allowing the tax-exempt consignment to be cleared from the port under a special arrangement while other procedures such as preparation of cheques continued, because the authority was sure of being paid by the government.
The Center informed the Prime Minister of the inconveniences encountered while waiting for clearance of their tax-exempt consignments from the port, because the process takes a long time, resulting in increasing storage charges.
Another challenge encountered by the Centre was the delay to clear drugs and nutrients for children living with HIV/Aids under the care of the centre.
?We cannot afford this burden because the drugs and nutrients we are using are sent by from donors outside the country,? read part of the speech.
The Center also requested Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to look into the possibility of providing subsidies to the centre because it serves people from the neighbouring villages.
Earlier while preaching in special thanks giving mass for the 10th anniversary of the Centre, Retired Pastor Auxiliary Mathias Isuja Joseph said the community has the responsibility to raise the children in good faith and ethics so that they could learn to love God.
?The community has been given the responsibility of safeguarding the children?s lives and also taking care of them so that they could later believe in God,? Bishop Joseph said.
The Village of Hope was established in August 17, 2002 with three children and a single family which was taking care of the children Hassan, Amani and Neema who were also present during the celebrations to mark 10th anniversary of the Center.
The Centre which take care of orphans through a family system currently has 163 children who live with 13 families under the supervision father and a mother in each house.
Among the children, 95 are in primary school, 10 in secondary schools while 8 have joined vocational training colleges while some of the remaining have joined nursery schools.
Meanwhile Prime Minister raised 20m/- in cash and pledges for assisting the Centre in its operations.
Some people also promised to provide the Centre with five sacks of maize, 100 kilogrammes of rice and 20 litres of cooking oil, 50 bags of maize flour and 20 bags of rice.
