Marie Spangler, 43, of Washington Township used her artistic ability to help fight breast cancer.About a year ago, she started crafting gourds. A traumatic construction accident that broke her neck and crushed her femur last July led her to reflect on people she lost early in life. Through crafting, she decided to honor her grandmother Charlotte, who died from breast cancer when Spangler was 8 years old.
She designed a whitewashed bottle gourd as a snowwoman with pink ear muffs and a ribbon as a scarf around its neck. The seasonal decoration has a carved snowflake on its base and lights up. She named the gourd Charlotte.
Spangler entered the design in a contest at Meadowbrooke Gourds in Carlisle, and it was chosen to be one of the business? featured products. Spangler said she plans to donate 1 percent of her 5 percent cut of sales to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and that Meadowbrooke agreed to match it.
?Everyone, in some point in time, will be affected by breast cancer, if they?re not already,? she said, adding that she worries about developing the illness.
Spangler can?t recall much about her grandmother?s illness because people didn?t talk much about cancer then. But she knows her grandma suffered a lot.
She hopes her gourd raises awareness, which one day might save lives.
