'Frosty the Snowman' arrested at Maryland parade

(AP) ? Who says "Frosty the Snowman" has to be jolly?

A man in a "Frosty the Snowman" costume was arrested Saturday during the annual Christmas parade in Chestertown, on Maryland's Eastern Shore. He's accused of scuffling with police and kicking at a police dog.

Sgt. John A. Dolgos tells The Star Democrat of Easton that 52-year-old Kevin Michael Walsh became agitated when a dog-handling officer tried to escort him away from the crowd.

Walsh told The Associated Press that he has dressed as Frosty in the parade for at least 10 years. He says he was wrongfully arrested. He says an officer hassled him after he remarked about the police dog's presence. He says he became agitated only after getting arrested.

Walsh was released on his own recognizance.

How drought-tolerant grasses came to be

Thursday, November 24, 2011

If you eat bread stuffing or grain-fed turkey this Thanksgiving, give thanks to the grasses ? a family of plants that includes wheat, oats, corn and rice. Some grasses, such as corn and sugar cane, have evolved a unique way of harvesting energy from the sun that's more efficient in hot, arid conditions. A new grass family tree reveals how this mode of photosynthesis came to be.

The results may one day help scientists develop more drought-tolerant grains, say scientists working at the U. S. National Evolutionary Synthesis Center.

From the grasslands of North America, to the pampas of South America, to the steppes of Eurasia and the savannas of the tropics, the grass family contains more than 10,000 species, including the world's three most important crops: wheat, rice and corn. We rely on grasses for sugar, liquor, bread, and livestock fodder.

Like all plants, grasses harvest energy from sunlight by means of photosynthesis. But grasses use two strategies that differ in how they take up carbon dioxide from the air and convert it into the starches and sugars vital to plant growth. The majority of grasses use a mode of photosynthesis called the C3 pathway, but many species ? especially those in hot, tropical climates ? use an alternate mode of photosynthesis known as C4. In hot, arid environments, C4 grasses such as maize, sugar cane, sorghum and millet have a leg up over C3 plants because they use water more efficiently.

An international team of researchers wanted to figure out how many times, and when, the C4 strategy came to be. To find out, they used DNA sequence data from three chloroplast genes to reconstruct the grass family tree. The resulting phylogeny represents 531 species, including 93 species for which DNA sequence data was previously unavailable.

"By working collaboratively across many labs, from the US to Argentina to Ireland to Switzerland ? with some people providing new plant material, and others doing the DNA sequencing ? we were able to get a lot done in a very short amount of time," said co-author Erika Edwards of Brown University.

The results suggest that the C4 pathway has evolved in the grasses more than 20 separate times within the last 30 or so million years, Edwards said.

What's most surprising, she added, is that C4 evolution seems to be a one-way street ? i.e., once the pathway evolves, there's no turning back. "We can't say whether it is evolutionarily 'impossible', or whether there simply hasn't been a good reason to do it, but it seems increasingly unlikely that any C4 grasses have ever reverted to the C3 condition," Edwards said.

"The new tree will be extremely useful for anyone who works on grasses," she added.

For example, scientists are currently trying to engineer the C4 photosynthetic pathway into C3 crops like rice to produce more stress-tolerant plants. By helping researchers identify pairs of closely related C3 and C4 species, the evolutionary relationships revealed in this study could help pinpoint the genetic changes necessary to do that.

"The next challenge is getting these species into cultivation and studying them closely, and ideally, sequencing their genomes," Edwards said.

The results will be published this week in the journal New Phytologist.

S&P cuts Egypt sovereign rating (AP)

CAIRO ? Ratings agency Standard & Poor's on Thursday pushed Egypt's sovereign credit ratings deeper into junk status, citing the country's dire political and economic situation and the increased risk of civil strife.

The cut is the latest blow to Egypt, whose economy is reeling from nine months of protests and strikes since the mid-February ouster of former President Hosni Mubarak. Last month, Moody's Investors Service also cut its ratings for Egypt, citing the ongoing political challenges and the weak economy.

S&P said it cut Egypt's long-term foreign and local currency sovereign ratings to B+ from BB-, with a negative outlook.

"The downgrade reflects our opinion that Egypt's weak political and economic profile ... has deteriorated further," the agency said in a statement.

In addition to the current wave of protests against the ruling military council, it cited the erosion of the country's net international reserves and the risk of further unrest stemming from rising expectations.

"These challenges could arise if populist demands for greater political participation are thwarted, or from demands for improved living standards from different sectors of the population no matter who is governing Egypt," the agency said.

The timing of the ratings cut is also troubling for Egypt, coming days before the Nov. 28 parliamentary elections ? the first since Mubarak left office. The fate of the elections is uncertain following the latest protests, in which demonstrators have called for the country's military rulers to step down and transfer power to a national salvation government.

Months of unrest have led analysts to cut forecasts for Egypt's economic growth. A nation that just a few years earlier had boasted growth rates of 7 percent is expected to realize anemic growth of around 1 percent this year, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Equally troubling has been the drop in international reserves, which fell from $36 billion at the end of December to $22 billion by the end of October. That decline, in part, has been linked to the Central Bank's efforts to prop up the Egyptian pound.

The stock market's benchmark index has shed almost 48 percent since the start of the year, losing around 190 billion pounds ($32 billion) and earning the dubious distinction of being among the worst performing in the world after Greece and Cyprus. On Thursday, the EGX30 index was up about 1.6 percent.

Bond and Treasury bill yields have climbed sharply, reflecting the premium the government must pay to borrow money, and the deficit is expected to climb above earlier forecasts of around 8.6 percent as officials are forced to increase spending to meet incessant popular demands for a boost in the standard of living.

"Following Egypt's popular uprising of January 2011, public expectations regarding the government's ability to promptly deliver improved living standards remain high," S&P said.

World stocks muted after poor German debt auction (AP)

BANGKOK ? Asian stock markets edged higher Thursday as speculation that China might ease its monetary policy soothed fears that the German economy ? Europe's strongest ? may be succumbing to the continent's debt crisis.

Benchmark oil hovered above $96 per barrel while the dollar fell against the euro and the yen.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng posted a 0.4 percent gain at 17,934.22. South Korea's Kospi rose 0.8 percent to 1,797.68. Benchmarks in Singapore, mainland China and Taiwan also rose.

Japan's Nikkei 225, reopening after a one-day public holiday, fell 1.3 percent to 8,208.47. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 slipped 0.2 percent to 4,044.20. Shares in India, Malaysia and Indonesia also fell.

Speculation that China's central bank was aiming to ease its tight monetary policy helped spur a wave of buying in Hong Kong, analysts said. But the official Xinhua News Agency said Thursday the move ? lowering reserve requirements for six rural banks in eastern Zhejiang ? was administrative rather than a policy shift. The banks' reserve requirements had been raised a year earlier after they failed to lend enough to farming businesses.

There have been signs that China's campaign of interest rate hikes and credit controls to tame stubbornly high inflation has been working, giving it leeway to ease monetary policy as the world economy stumbles.

"The positive catalyst today is the expectation that the China tightening cycle might loosen," said Jackson Wong, vice president at Tanrich Securities in Hong Kong. "I do think the rebound is pretty short term."

The chatter over Beijing's monetary policy helped push up Chinese banking shares. Hong Kong-listed Agricultural Bank of China Ltd. jumped 3.3 percent and Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, the country's biggest commercial lender, rose 1.9 percent.

But heavy industrial shares, which are closely tied to economic growth, fell as worries about a global economic slowdown grew. Japan's Komatsu Ltd., a world leader in construction machinery, lost 3.8 percent. India Tata's Steel fell 2.6 percent.

Global markets were spooked Wednesday by the poor results at an auction of German debt, which met with only 60 percent demand. Germany's Financial Agency blamed "the extraordinarily nervous market environment."

The weak buying suggests that Europe's crisis might be infecting strong nations that are crucial to keeping the euro currency afloat. Germany bears much of the burden of bailing out weaker neighbors such as Greece and Portugal.

Analysts at Credit Agricole CIB said the European debt crisis remains "the major concern for the markets" and that the German debt auction signals the spread of "the contagion to hard core economies" in the region.

Borrowing costs for Italy and Spain rose from levels that already were considered dangerously high. Europe lacks the resources to bail out those countries, its third- and fourth-biggest economies.

In the U.S., the government released a mixed batch of economic reports. Slightly more people applied for unemployment benefits last week, a sign that layoffs continue.

Consumer spending was sluggish but incomes rose a bit more than expected. Orders for long-lasting manufactured products fell for a second month and business investment dropped off.

The Dow fell 2.1 percent to close at 11,257.55. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 2.2 percent to 1,161.79. The Nasdaq fell 2.4 percent to 2,460.08.

U.S. markets will be closed on Thursday for the Thanksgiving holiday and will have shortened hours on Friday.

Benchmark crude for January delivery was up 37 cents at $96.54 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.84 to settle at $96.17 in New York on Wednesday.

In currency trading, the euro rose to $1.3373 from $1.3326 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar dropped to 77.09 yen from 77.35 yen.

Belt-whipping Texas judge suspended: Sign of shift on corporal punishment?

The Texas Supreme Court suspended the family-law judge who was caught on video beating his 16-year-old daughter. The move could signal that views on corporal punishment of kids are changing ? even in the South.?

The Texas Supreme Court has suspended the Texas family-law judge whose daughter secretly videotaped him belt-whipping her, suggesting to some observers that, even in the socially conservative South, where?corporal punishment is seen as important in shaping character,?the fine line between discipline and abuse is shifting.?

Texas' highest court on Tuesday suspended Aransas County Judge William Adams with pay while the State Commission on Judicial Conduct investigates. Judge Adams,?who makes rulings on whether parents are fit to oversee their children, found himself at the center of a national firestorm when his 23-year-old daughter, Hillary, posted a video to YouTube in October that showed him beating her. The incident had taken place in 2004.?

Adams maintains that he did nothing wrong, and the investigation could exonerate him, but the fact that the Texas court took this step is significant, says?David Finkelhor, director of the University of New Hampshire Crimes against Children Research Center.

"We're in a normative shift regarding views on corporal punishment, and what shifts the fastest are views on extremes of what is tolerated," says Mr. Finkelhor. "This video is in the cusp area where there's a lot of controversy right now."

In the YouTube clip, Adams says, "Go get the belt. The big one. I'm going to spank her now." As Hillary wails and begs her father to stop, he lashes her with a belt across the legs.

Ms. Adams says she posted the video to force her father to get help for personal issues. He said the beating looked worse than it was, and that he had the right to discipline a child who had been caught uploading pirated music. Moreover, he alleges that his daughter posted the video in retaliation for his demand that she either return to college or he'd take away her car and cell phone.

Though the statute of limitations for any child-abuse charges has passed, experts say the behavior in the video would likely not qualify as child abuse under current laws, anyway.

Socially, the South is more supportive of corporal punishment to discipline a child, laws and studies show. For example, all Southern states except Virginia allow corporal punishment in schools, while no states in the Northeast or on the West Coast do. In addition, a?recent study by Southern Methodist University researcher George Holden, which?videotaped 37 north Texas parents, showed that nearly all hit or swatted their child in a 36-hour period.?

On Tuesday, Adams waived a preliminary hearing on his suspension, admitted no guilt, and agreed to cooperate with the investigation. How the court's judicial conduct board deals with Adams may be the ultimate indicator of how far attitudes on corporal punishments have shifted in society's eyes.

"I'll be interested to know whether the suspension is a fig leaf to say [the Supreme Court] is taking it seriously or are they really taking it seriously," says Finkelhor.

Another Texas court is expected to rule Wednesday on whether to uphold a restraining order on Adams that keeps him from visiting his 10-year-old daughter, who lives with his ex-wife.

Polish Oscar winner makes first film about Lech Walesa (omg!)

Oscar-winning film director Andrzej Wajda (R) smiles as he poses with lead actors Robert Wieckiewicz (L) and Agnieszka Grochowska during a news conference for his new film "Walesa" in Warsaw November 24, 2011. The movie is based on the life of Lech Walesa, leader of the Polish Solidarity movement. REUTERS/Kacper Pempel

WARSAW (Reuters) - Lech Walesa will finally see his life made into a movie, more than three decades after the shipyard electrician launched the Solidarity union that helped topple communism in Eastern Europe.

On Thursday, Oscar-winning Polish director Andrzej Wajda began filming the first biopic about Walesa, who remains a respected but controversial figure.

While Walesa is revered abroad for his courageous leadership of the first independent trade union under communism and his imprisonment under martial law, he is a more divisive figure at home because of his record as Poland's first post-communist president and his often combative style.

"I don't want to, but I have to," Wajda, 85, told a news conference, using one of Walesa's famous sayings when the Nobel Peace Prize winner ran for office for the first time.

The veteran filmmaker said he had spoken to Walesa about making the movie and he did not object.

"I think if he didn't trust me, he would not let me make this film," said Wajda, who was also a member of Solidarity's advisory committee in the early 1980s and appeared at Gdansk shipyard in 1980 during the famous strike.

The film's writer said the movie, which will be called "Walesa," aimed to show the most famous living Pole as a human being, not just an icon.

"I agreed to write a script because the director told me that he didn't want to raise another Walesa monument," said Janusz Glowacki, who wrote the screenplay.

Robert Wieckiewicz, the lead actor, admitted it would be his most difficult role yet.

"Firstly, it's a contemporary character, who is still alive. Secondly, he's one of the best-known Poles and I think there are dozens of 'Walesa experts' in Poland and each of them will have their own opinion," Wieckiewicz said.

He also confided that he would have to resort to a fake mustache because he was unable to grow one to match that of his subject.

"Walesa" will be the first Polish production about Walesa, although the former Solidarity leader has already been portrayed in Volker Schlondorff's film "Strike" five years ago.

Walesa played himself in dozens of productions, including Wajda's "Man of Iron," which won the Palme d'Or for best picture at the 1981 Cannes film festival.

He also inspired U2's song "New Year's Day" that coincidentally came out on January 1, 1983, the day after Poland's authorities suspended martial law.

The movie is scheduled to hit the screens in autumn next year.

Ten Insurance Policies You Need To Own (Free Money Finance)

The following is a guest post from Hank who writes about personal finance on Money Q&A.

I wish I had more insurance coverage. How many times do you actually hear that or say that to yourself? Most people hate talking or even thinking about insurance. It isn?t a pleasant subject. In fact, more people would rather visit their dentist for a filling than think about the types or amounts of insurance that they need to purchase in order to protect themselves, assets, and families. There are an incredible number and array of different types of insurance policies that you can purchase and quite a few that you should own. You may look at the number ten and think that is just way too many, but when you get right down to it, they might be just right to keep you and your family protected.

Ten Insurance Policies You Need To Own

1. Disability Insurance ? A third of Americans will find themselves disabled and unable to work at some point during their careers. In fact, almost half of all home foreclosures are a direct result of people being disabled and unable to work. While disability insurance may be an expensive addition to your insurance coverage, it is well worth having it protect your future income. You can choose to purchase long-term disability insurance that does not start until you have been disabled for over six months in an effort to save money on your premiums, but of course this assumes that you have a fully funded emergency fund in place to cover you until then.

2. Umbrella Insurance ? No longer is umbrella insurance something that only the rich need to purchase. We continue to live in an ever-increasing litigious society that is quick to sue each other over the smallest issues. People mistakenly think that they will not be sued if they do not have much in the way of assets, but they often forget their most important asset of all, their future income. The cost of umbrella insurance is incredibly small for the large amount of liability insurance coverage that you obtain as a result.

3. Long-Term Care Insurance ? Almost 70% of Americans will require some type of care such as an in-home nurse or a nursing home after they reach the age of 65. A year-long stay in a nursing home can cost $60,000 per year or more depending on the amenities. That can quickly eat up any savings or retirement nest egg that you have spent decades to accumulate. Long-term care insurance can provide you with money to live out your last years comfortably while not depleting your retirement portfolio that your spouse may later need.

4. Term Life Insurance ? Term life insurance is one of the best deals in personal finance and provides an excellent amount of life insurance coverage for a specific period of time. There are very few needs in life for permanent insurance, and most people find themselves not requiring life insurance after their home mortgages are paid off and their children are grown. Term life insurance can fill the gap when you need life insurance the most while keeping your premium costs low.

5. Health Insurance ? Not having health insurance is one of the fastest ways to find yourself in financial trouble and possibly on the way to bankruptcy. One accident or significant illness without coverage can leave you holding hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills if you are not careful. If you are recently out of work and without coverage, you may want to consider purchasing COBRA insurance coverage for you and your family or even catastrophic health insurance coverage until you can hopefully receive coverage through a group plan with an employer.

6. Renter?s Insurance ? Homeowners with mortgages accept homeowner?s insurance as a fact of life, but far too many renters go without purchasing renter?s insurance. This is a huge mistake. For as little as $20 per month, you can purchase renter?s insurance that will protect your assets from theft, fire, liability, and many other disasters. Renters often mistakenly think that their landlord?s insurance policy will cover them, but the policy only provides protection for the building and not your items inside your rental home or apartment. Too many renters are risking huge losses by not owning inexpensive renter?s insurance.

7. Flood Insurance ? Flood insurance is not simply for homeowners who live in a flood zone. In fact, FEMA estimates that one third of all homes damaged by flooding are not even in a flood zone or near a body of water. Flood insurance is very cheap, costing just a couple of hundred dollars per year, if you do not live in a federally designated flood zone. It is a critical piece of insurance protection that too many homeowners are lacking.

8. Earthquake Insurance ? Most homeowners realize that their typical homeowners insurance policy does not cover them for earthquake damage, and many simply think that they do not need coverage because they live so far from a fault line. But, the unusual recent earthquake along the northeast coast of the United States shows that earthquakes can strike almost anywhere in the country. You could find yourself paying a hefty amount out of pocket if you are not covered and an earthquake damages your home.

9. Rider Or Floater Insurance ? Did you know that your homeowner?s insurance and renter?s insurance only covers a small amount of losses on specific items such as electronics, artwork, and jewelry? In many cases, the amount of coverage in a basic homeowner?s insurance policy is limited to as low as $2,500. One nice engagement ring and wedding band can quickly eclipse your coverage limits, but you can add a floater insurance policy or a rider on your current homeowner?s insurance that can add extra insurance coverage for specific items. These insurance policies are called riders because they ride the coattails of your primary policies, and the additional insurance can be bought for a very low sum.

10. Title Insurance ? Title insurance is something that homeowners are very familiar with, but you can also buy title insurance for other large purchases as well. If you are considering purchasing an expensive used car, for example, you may want to consider buying separate title insurance as well. Like purchasing a home, title insurance can protect you from a fraudulent seller or undisclosed damage to the property that would ultimately make reselling it a nightmare.

Do you really need ten different types of insurance policies? Maybe you do and maybe you don?t. But, do the risks of not having these policies outweigh their costs? In many cases, you are taking potentially devastating financial risks by not having these insurance policies in place even though they ultimately have very low premium costs. The benefits of owning these insurance policies far outweigh their costs.

Fanatec Forza Motorsport CSR wheel and Elite pedals review

It's amazing to realize that about two years ago Fanatec's first Xbox 360 racing wheel, the Forza 3 Porsche 911 Turbo Wheel, hit the scene. Although it turned out to be a mixed bag, Fanatec pleasantly surprised us with its Porsche GT2 and Clubsport Pedals in January of this year -- despite a roaring fan and shaky shifter mounts. Now, we're saying hello to a new trio of racing sim-related goods from the company intended for Forza Motorsport 4 on Xbox 360: the $249.95 Forza Motorsport CSR Wheel, $59.95 shifter set, and $149.95 CSR Elite Pedals.

If you'll recall, it was back in March that we checked some of this kit out, and now with Forza 4 here, we hooked this mashup of gear up with our Playseat Evolution for a massive amount of virtual spins. So, did this combination help speed past the checkerboard with a respectable feel? Shift past the break find out in our full review.

Tascam unveils iM2 microphone add-on for iOS devices, makes live Foo Fighters bootlegs a breeze

Sure, audio recording via the stock mic and iOS app is pretty serviceable for most tasks, but what about capturing that next Avett Brothers gig? You need look no further than Tascam's iM2 stereo microphone for your Apple handheld or slate. Equipped with a pair of condenser microphones -- the same kit as the outfit's DR-series recorders -- the iM2 plugs right in to the dock port of your iOS device. The duo is adjustable over 180-degrees for the perfect capture and it sports its own preamp and analog-to-digital converter to cut out unwanted coughs and increase those vicious banjo chops. Since the peripheral doesn't use the stock iPhone preamp, it is capable of capturing up to 125dB levels without distortion. And don't worry about that 4S dying mid-set, as the iM2 features a USB input that enables charging through the encore. If you're jonesin' for a closer look, hit the gallery below before grabbing yours for $80.

Mexico senator drops out of presidential race (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Mexican Sen. Manlio Fabio Beltrones says he won't seek the presidential nomination for the Institutional Revolutionary Party, leaving former Mexico State Gov. Enrique Pena Nieto effectively unopposed.

Beltrones says in an announcement published Tuesday that he wants to maintain his party's unity as it seeks to regain the presidency it lost in 2000 after 71 years in power.

The move means that two of the three major candidates expected to compete in the 2012 race are unofficially set.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of leftist Democratic Revolution Party was selected as presidential nominee after winning an opinion poll released last week.

President Felipe Calderon's National Action Party has yet to choose a candidate.

Column: BCS runs out of tweaks _ and luck

Over at the Bowl Championship Series, the short answer to the question of when there will be a playoff in college football remains the same.

Never.

But get back in touch with the BCS next week, or better yet, with their sponsors after the Jan. 9 championship game and ask the question then.

For years now, playoff advocates have been drawing up nightmare scenarios that would shame the BCS out of business, but this season it's practically guaranteed that the title game will leave many fans unsatisfied.

Last week, four of the top seven teams in the BCS standings lost their footing and left an unprecedented three teams from the same division ? the SEC West ? holding down the top of the leaderboard.

Two of them, most likely current No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama, figure to be on hand at the Superdome for the title game. But even if No. 3 Arkansas grabs one of those spots, the newly crowned BCS champion will seem more mythical than ever.

Remember, the BCS hijacked the postseason in 1998 with the promise of matching the No. 1 and No. 2 teams at the very end. And every time logic didn't jibe with their rankings, the guys in charge "tweaked" the formula after the championship game and promised it wouldn't happen again. You can argue over which school got jobbed the worst since then, but the two unofficial tweaks that matter here ? a team must win its conference championship; the BCS finale shouldn't be a rematch of a regular-season game ? likely means it's the fans who will feel cheated the most.

LSU, Alabama and Arkansas all will have played each other by the time next weekend rolls around and it's possible that none of them will be the SEC champion when the game ends on Dec. 3.

Given the results of that little round-robin tournament so far, only fans of tractor pulls will be rooting to see any two of those three reprise those games in January.

LSU slogged past Alabama 9-6 in overtime and the Crimson Tide pounded Arkansas 38-14.

In the past, the waiting period between the end of the regular season and the championship game has always worked in the BCS' favor. Tempers cool as weeks pass. The outrageous lobbying and occasionally over-the-top remarks coaches make about the selection process recede into the background. Among fans, a kind of fatigue sets in. Arguing over whether either or both teams are deserving gives way to acceptance. It's like walking around with a rock in your shoe.

What makes this season even more aggravating is that the rankings are just about right. Arkansas ventures into Baton Rouge on Friday and if the Razorbacks pull off an upset and go on to beat SEC East entrant Georgia in the conference championship, they will have earned the trip to New Orleans. There are 14 one-loss teams in the mix at the moment, but few would deny that LSU ? even if the Tigers lose to Arkansas ? and Alabama would be the most deserving of the lot. The problem is that all three would have flaws we might be willing to overlook if they had to clear a path to that championship game on the field ? it's called a playoff ? instead of relying on computer operators and best guesses to deposit them there. Now, there's virtually no chance the winner gets the benefit of the doubt from the majority of fans.

All we know for certain is that the guys in charge at the BCS don't mind seeing their brand being kicked around like a rusty can everywhere from the Oval Office down to the corner tavern. It hardly matters to them if the tweaks require additional tweaking, or if they throw out a stinker in the showcase game now and then. We keep hearing how resilient college football is, but it's hard to remember a worse couple of years for the game.

Southern California isn't bowl eligible because of the excesses of the Reggie Bush era and Miami didn't even wait for an invitation to turn down because of the ongoing investigation into a rogue booster's largesse. Ohio State, on the other hand, isn't likely to say no, despite standing on the threshold of NCAA double-secret probation, and probably neither will Penn State, embroiled in a child sex-abuse scandal that makes the usual transgressions in the sport barely worth mentioning.

What all those scandals have in common is, at the very least, the whiff of corruption, not to mention what the NCAA terms a lack of institutional control. So how fitting is that the BCS, which has twisted itself into a pretzel countless times to hang onto the postseason franchise and been just transparent enough to stay ahead of lawsuits and the Congress, could finally get called out by the fans for doing exactly what it was created to do?

It's shaping up to be a bowl season that will be memorable for all the wrong reasons. Can't wait to see how the BCS tries to tweak its way out of this one.

How To Hit a Woman

Power-Mad Bitch
Long before she first ran for office and became the subject of her very own attack ads, Hillary Clinton was attacked in various venues as insufficiently feminine, as a lesbian, as scheming, power-hungry, and emasculating. When in 2000 she ran to represent New York in the U.S. Senate, her opponent, Rick Lazio, ran an ad saying, ?Hillary Clinton: You can always trust her to do what's right?for Hillary Clinton.'' The same year state?s GOP chairman released a fund-raising letter calling her an ?ambitious, ruthless, scheming, calculating, manipulating woman.? The letter used the word ?woman? five times. A group called the Christian Action Network even produced an ad with a male narrator saying, ?it is rumored that Hillary Clinton is a lesbian ? sometimes rumors are true,? while creepy horror-movie music played in the background.

(AP) ? Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich on Monday proposed allowing younger workers still decades away from retirement to bypass Social Security and instead choose private investment accounts that would be subject to stock market gyrations.

The former House speaker, who has risen in the polls, would allow younger workers to take their share of the payroll tax that funds Social Security and put it in a private account.

Employers would still pay their share of the tax, which would be used to pay benefits for current retirees. But it would create a funding shortfall that Gingrich brushed off.

"That gap is more than covered by the savings" that would come from giving states control of 185 social welfare programs, Gingrich told reporters after a speech that laid out broad concepts but lacked key details.

Gingrich's plan would cover the near-term deficits by giving to states responsibility for such programs as AmeriCorps volunteers, Section 8 public housing and Pell Grants for college students. He said states were better suited to administer those programs.

Gingrich said his retirement proposal, an idea floated by Republicans before him, would empower voters.

"Wouldn't you rather control your account?" Gingrich asked an audience of students at St. Anselm College.

His advisers couldn't say how much the plan would cost, when it would begin or who would be eligible. They did say, however, that current retirees would continue to receive benefits at promised levels.

Peter Ferrara, Gingrich's senior economic policy adviser, said federal spending as a whole would be reduced by half within the next three decades.

"It's a lot of reduction," he said.

At a business leaders' breakfast earlier in the day in Nashua, Gingrich predicted that the program "would save literally trillions over the next generation."

Under the plan, workers would be able to do one of two things: continue sending their share of Social Security taxes to the popular, safety-net program or give it to private firms that would compete for those dollars ? as much as $20,000 a year, Gingrich estimated.

"No one is ever forced into the (private account) system," he said after the speech.

Markets would determine how much money workers who chose private accounts would get each month. Gingrich guaranteed a minimum income in case Wall Street collapses like it did in 2008.

As Gingrich spoke Monday, stocks plunged several hundred points by midday as a special congressional panel in Washington appeared ready to declare failure in its attempt to agree on how to trim federal spending by $1.2 trillion over a decade.

Under Gingrich's plan, the federal government would regulate the private accounts run by private firms to ensure the portfolios were diversified enough to prevent one company or sector from taking down the entire system.

Government approved firms then would compete for consumers, who could move their money among accounts based on fund performance.

Organized labor and advocacy groups such as AARP would be allowed to collaborate with the investment firms to tailor plans to reflect the promises they make in pension plans.

Gingrich's plan also would treat the private retirement accounts as other investments, which could be passed on as part of an estate.

President George W. Bush offered some similar proposals for Social Security after he was re-elected in 2004, but faced stiff resistance from Democrats and some within his own party about any proposed changes to the popular program.

Workers pay a 6.2 percent Social Security tax on the first $106,800 in wages, which is matched by employers. This year, the tax rate for workers was reduced temporarily to 4.2 percent. The tax cut is set to expire at the end of the year, though President Barack Obama wants to expand it and extend it for another year. Congress is expected to approve.

Protesters confront police as Egypt clashes enter third day (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Protesters demanding Egypt's ruling generals hand over power beat back a new police raid to evict them from Cairo's central Tahrir Square on Monday, witnesses said.

The police fired tear gas and attacked a makeshift field hospital, while protesters broke up pavements to hurl the chunks of concrete at police.

Black smoke billowed from a six-storey apartment building near the square and a woman screamed for help from a top-floor window. Firefighters arrived but police fired tear gas from a side street at a crowd gathered below, angering bystanders. Some residents tried to scale the building to rescue those trapped.

The clashes between government forces and protesters in Cairo and other Egyptian cities have killed at least 12 people since Saturday in some of the worst violence since the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak.

"There is clearly no going back as you can see this violence cannot be swept under the table," said Essam Gouda, a protester in Tahrir, who said two marches were due to converge there by mid-afternoon.

"We aim to control the entry points to the square so that security doesn't block protesters from entering," said Essam.

Tahrir Square was the rallying point for protesters in Cairo when an 18-day uprising toppled Mubarak from three decades of power in February.

With just a week before voting in the first free parliamentary election in decades, the confrontations have raised concerns about how smooth voting will be.

Egyptians elect a new parliament in a staggered vote that starts on November 28, but even when the assembly is picked, presidential powers remain with the army until a presidential poll, which may not happen until late 2012 or early 2013. Protesters want a much swifter transition.

Police backed by army officers fired salvoes of gas canisters and charged demonstrators in the square as darkness fell on Sunday, temporarily sending protesters fleeing. Demonstrators brandished spent shotgun cartridges and bullet casings, although police denied using live rounds.

Security forces burned down banners and Internet clips, which could not be independently checked, showed police beating protesters with sticks, pulling them by the hair and, in one case, dumping what appeared to be a corpse on piles of rubbish.

Demonstrators swiftly regrouped in sidestreets and returned to take control of the square overnight before police tried again to retake Tahrir after dawn.

TANTAWI THE TARGET OF PROTESTS

Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, Mubarak's defense minister for two decades and who leads the army council, has become a target of protests.

"I don't want Tantawi ... I am staying tonight," said Ayman Ramadan, a data entry employee, said early on Monday morning.

Outside the burning apartment building, protesters chanted: "Tantawi burned it and here are the revolutionaries!"

State television said at least 10 people were killed on Sunday, raising the death toll since Saturday, when clashes erupted, to at least 12. Hundreds have been wounded.

The demonstration that began on Friday was initially led by Islamists, angry at a bid by the army-backed cabinet to lay down principles for a new constitution that would have kept the army out of the control of a future civilian government.

But since then, the protest has largely been driven by the same youthful activists who galvanized Egyptians to bring down Mubarak, putting national pride before religion.

One of those groups, April 6 youth movement, told Egypt's state news agency it would stay in Tahrir and continue sit-ins in other cities until its demands were met, including a call for a presidential vote no later than April.

Other demands include replacing the current cabinet with a national salvation government and an immediate investigation into the clashes in Tahrir and trial of those implicated in it.

Presidential candidate Hazem Salah Abu Ismail, an ultra-conservative Salafi Islamist, told protesters: "We are demanding as the minimum that power be handed over within six months."

The army has denied any desire to cling onto power and says it will not let any violence delay the parliamentary poll. It insists it can ensure security during the vote.

"We are all insisting on having the election on time -- the government, parties and the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces," cabinet spokesman Mohamed Hegazy told Reuters.

But analysts say a surge in violence in voting, a common feature of elections in Mubarak's era of rigged polls, could undermine the assembly's legitimacy if the result is questioned and deepen public frustration at the army's handling of the transition.

Presidential hopefuls Mohamed ElBaradei and Abdallah al-Ashaal denounced violence against protesters and called for a national salvation government, state news agency MENA said.

The European Union's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, urged Egypt's interim authority to halt the violence.

"I urge calm and restraint and condemn the use of violence in the strongest terms," she said.

Liberal groups are dismayed by the military trials of thousands of civilians and the army's failure to scrap a hated emergency law. Islamists eyeing a strong showing in the next parliament suspect the army wants to curtail their influence.

Analysts say Islamists could win 40 percent of parliamentary seats, with a big portion going to the Muslim Brotherhood, the most organised Islamist group.

Male Spiders Scam Females with Gift-Wrapped Garbage

60-Second Science60-Second Science | More Science

Male nursery web spiders lure mates with silk-wrapped offerings, only some of which contain tasty treats. Cynthia Graber reports

More 60-Second Science

Male nursery web spiders often woo potential lady-friends with gifts wrapped in silk. Mating may ensue, during which a female unspools the present, expecting to find a tasty treat. But the males can be unscrupulous. Some offerings contain inedible plant seeds or empty insect exoskeletons.

How do males get away with such egregious behavior?

Researchers provided males with potential gifts?either a fly or an inedible item, such as a bit of cotton. Other males had to give it a shot with no gift at all.

The empty-handed males were mostly unsuccessful at mating. Whereas those with a gift could get the girl. But if the gift was worthless, the females quickly realized the deceit and pushed the copulating males off. Which gave the males less time to transfer sperm.

The study is in the journal BMC Evolutionary Biology. [Maria J. Albo et al., "Worthless donations: male deception and female counter play in a nuptial gift-giving spider"]

Females clearly prefer males bearing edible presents. But some males know they can get limited action without expending the energy on a real gift. And the females laid almost the same amount of eggs fertilized by males bearing real or phony gifts. With both strategies successful, the behavior gets maintained. And the species stays stocked with deadbeat dads.

Karen Thalacker: Memo to the Legal Community: It Takes a Village ...

In Sunday's New York Times, David Segal's article "What They Don't Teach Law Students: Lawyering" shines some light on what many law schools don't want their students to know: they won't know how to practice law when they graduate.

Although this may come as a surprise to people outside the legal community, this is something that practicing attorneys have known for quite some time. In fact, the need for practical information about how to practice law is the reason I wrote "The New Lawyer's Handbook: 101 Things They Don't Teach You in Law School."

After graduation, it became very clear to me that while the study of law deals with statutes, cases and appeals, the practice of law deals with an intriguing cocktail of greed, substance abuse, domestic violence and basic immaturity - and that is just between you and your law partners. Your clients also experience these issues in their cases.

Introduction, "The New Lawyer's Handbook"

You may be wondering what the law schools are doing if they are not teaching students how to practice law. Law schools are teaching critical thinking. They are giving students a long view of legal history. They are showing students how to dissect an appellate case, write about it and argue it. They are providing the information that students need to pass a bar exam. They are connecting students with internships and full-time employment.

Most law schools also try to find "real-life" experiences for their students through legal clinics and mock trials. But here is the reality: you don't know what it's like to be a lawyer until you have the sole responsibility for a real-life client with a real-life problem sitting across the desk from you.

To be clear, law schools can and should do a better job of preparing students but they are only part of the solution. The state bar associations need to sponsor legal education seminars and mentorship programs. Law firm partners need to create a teaching atmosphere within their firms. Experienced lawyers need to foster an atmosphere of collegiality with new practitioners who are on the opposite side of a case. New practitioners need to admit that they don't know what they don't know and approach the practice with eagerness and also with humility.

Segal's article asks, "What do corporate clients wish associates were taught in law school?" Let's ask another question: "What do new practitioners need to know in order to both succeed in and enjoy their law practice?"

They need to learn how to survive office politics. They need to learn how to have a positive and productive relationship with their office staff. They need to understand the business of practicing law.

They need to know how to control their clients. Whether it's comforting a sobbing client or defusing an angry one, they need to understand that the practice of law is actually one-part law and one-part psychology.

But arguably, the most important thing they need is an experienced lawyer to mentor them. The mentor will answer questions without making them feel stupid. The mentor will encourage them to keep a healthy balance between their law practice and their life. When the new practitioner is lamenting that he/she is waking up at 3 a.m. worrying about a case, the mentor will offer advice and a sympathetic ear.

The most effective way to transition students from the classroom to the courtroom requires law schools and lawyers to work together. The law schools need to set aside any disdain they harbor about the value of practical advice from experienced lawyers. Experienced lawyers must accept and embrace the responsibility to mentor not only the lawyers in their firm but all of the lawyers they come into contact with.

Learning to practice takes practice. In the end, the responsibility for the theoretical and practical education of students and new practitioners belongs to the entire legal community.

Finding could lead to new cancer-stopping therapies

DALLAS -- A research team led by UT Southwestern Medical Center scientists has identified an atypical metabolic pathway unique to some tumors, possibly providing a future target for drugs that could reduce or halt the spread of cancer.

Dr. Ralph DeBerardinis, senior author of the study published Nov. 20 in Nature, likened the newly discovered pathway to traffic that is rerouted during a highway construction project.

"If we hone in on this reverse pathway, then we may be able to prevent the growth of certain types of cancer," said Dr. DeBerardinis, assistant professor of pediatrics and a physician scientist in the Eugene McDermott Center for Human Growth and Development. "It's long been thought that targeting tumor-specific metabolic pathways would lead to an effective way to treat cancer. This is one of the few metabolic pathways that may actually exist specifically in tumors."

The pathway involves the Krebs cycle, a series of chemical reactions that generates energy and is considered one of the most familiar and widely studied processes in biology. In the normal cycle, energy is derived by the breakdown of acetate from ingested carbohydrates, fats and proteins into carbon dioxide and water.

For more than 70 years, biology textbooks have depicted the Krebs cycle as running clockwise in normal cells. UT Southwestern researchers found that in some tumors the cycle runs in reverse.

The discovery is the latest milestone in a long line of scientific inquiry that began in the 1920s when biochemists first recognized metabolic differences between cancer cells and normal cells. Scientists since have thought they could stop the growth of cancer cells with drugs that target only tumor-specific pathways, leaving normal cells unaffected.

Researchers have identified only a few such therapeutic windows, the latest of which appears to be the reverse Krebs cycle pathway identified by Dr. DeBerardinis and colleagues in this investigation.

"There is no pathway that has been more extensively studied over the years than the Krebs cycle," Dr. DeBerardinis said. "The fact that with relatively modest manipulation, it can run in reverse is incredibly fascinating."

Dr. James K.V. Willson, director of the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center, said the findings are significant.

"We are learning that certain cancers have previously unrecognized mutations in genes controlling metabolism and these abnormalities are providing new therapeutic opportunities," he said.

###

Andrew Mullen, a graduate student in genetics and development at UT Southwestern, was first author of the paper. Other UT Southwestern researchers involved in the study were Dr. Eunsook Jin, instructor in the Advanced Imaging Research Center; Pei-Hsuan Chen, graduate student in integrative biology; and Dr. Tzuling Cheng, a postdoctoral researcher in pediatrics. Scientists from Northwestern University and from the National Cancer Institute also participated.

The project was funded in part with a grant from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas.
