Restaurant Week Hawaii 2012: Staff Picks ? Honolulu, Hawaii ...

HONOLULU PULSE STAFF / honolulupulse@staradvertiser.com

It?s a good time to eat out, as Restaurant Week Hawaii kicks off tomorrow, Nov. 12, and lasts through Sunday, Nov. 18. Dozens of restaurants are offering discounts and prix fixe menus in support of new generations of culinary talent during this seven-day celebration of Hawaii?s dining scene.

The seeds for the annual event were planted five years ago, when several of Hawaii?s top restaurateurs and food industry executives got together to brainstorm ways to raise money to build what is now the Culinary Institute of the Pacific. Plans call for a 40,000-square-foot facility with two laboratory buildings, classrooms, offices, a culinary amphitheater and restaurant at the site of the former Cannon Club at Diamond Head.

The number of participating restaurants has grown from about 40 in 2007 to more than 100 this year. They run the gamut, from Shiro?s Saimin Haven and Hank?s Haute Dogs to Hoku?s and Le Bistro (the Honolulu Star-Advertiser?s Critics Choice for best restaurant at this year?s ?Ilima Awards.)

New participants include the Alley Restaurant at Aiea Bowl, Japengo, Prima, V Lounge, Kissaten Caf?, Yuzu and The Whole Ox.

To point readers to some of the best deals and places to try that they might not otherwise visit, we asked the dining and food columnists, writers and foodies on our staff to offer their recommendations. Restaurant Week Hawaii Pocket Guides are available at Ala Moana Center Customer Service while supplies last; for dining reviews and listings of Oahu?s top restaurants, see the 2012-2013 ?Ilima Awards guide.

d.k. Steakhouse

Chef David ?D.K.? Kodama?s d.k. Steakhouse is known for creative menu items that emphasize local ingredients, generous servings and rich flavors. Take advantage of this offer for a tour of the restaurant?s strengths, including a comfortable vibe that masks a fierce pride in the preparation.

For Restaurant Week, executive chef Jason Miyasaki?s four-course ?Farm to Table? menu ($50; add $12.95 for Chuck Furu?ya?s chosen wine pairings) includes a roasted Kahuku ?Super Sweet? Corn Ravioli topped with b?chamel sauce flavored with Maine lobster and a salad with bacon lardon lyonnaise and a poached egg.

For the main course, choose between a bacon-wrapped tenderloin of Big Island-raised red veal with grilled Waialua asparagus, edamame ragout, morel mushroom demi, Ho Farms cherry tomatoes and pearl onion confit, or fresh opakapaka with linguini, Nalo Swiss chard, Maui onions and Nalo basil pesto beurre blanc, topped with a Ho Farms cherry tomato lomi and Nalo micro greens.

Dessert is a Warm Chocolate Bomb of bittersweet chocolate cake, semisweet ganache and mint chocolate chip ice cream. (Waikiki Beach Marriott, 2552 Kalakaua Ave., 931-6280, www.dkrestaurants.com)

Hiroshi?s Eurasian Tapas

I have never eaten at Hiroshi?s Eurasian Tapas, even though a majority of the people I know consider it a favorite place to celebrate a special occasion or a random Tuesday night.

With Restaurant Week my opportunity has come. And for the price of $42 for a four-course meal, don?t you want to be the first at the door? Bring a friend and sample all the offerings. The main course is a choice between pan-roasted opah and bacon-wrapped filet mignon. (Waterfront Plaza, 500 Ala Moana Blvd., 533-4476, www.hiroshihawaii.com)

Japengo

If you haven?t tried Japengo yet, there?s no better time. The trendy spot in the former Ciao Mein space on the third floor of the Hyatt Regency Waikiki serves up amazing sushi and other delicacies from Asia and the Pacific.

One of the best offers during Restaurant Week, Japengo?s four-course family-style dinner is a great value at only $35. The evening includes a white dragon roll (crab and unagi in tempura flakes), a Japa?nese-style salad, wafu steak (or fresh island fish) and cr?me br?l?e, with choice of wine, house beer, coffee or tea. And to top it all off, parking is free with validation whether you valet or self-park. (Hyatt Regency Waikiki, 2424 Kalakaua Ave., 237-6140, www.waikiki.hyatt.com)

Lakers rout Warriors 101-77 after Brown's firing

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Kobe Bryant scored 27 points, Pau Gasol added 14 points and 16 rebounds, and the Los Angeles Lakers responded to coach Mike Brown's firing earlier Friday with a 101-77 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

Jordan Hill scored 14 points for the Lakers, who had just a few hours to absorb Brown's dismissal after just 18 months on the job. Following a bumpy first half under interim coach Bernie Bickerstaff, they pulled away in the third quarter with a 25-9 run led by Bryant, who also had nine rebounds and seven assists.

Stephen Curry scored 18 points and Klay Thompson had 15 for the Warriors, who have lost five straight to the Lakers overall, and nine straight at Staples Center since March 2008.

The comfortable victory doubled the Lakers' victory total for the season and capped one of the most tumultuous days in recent history for a franchise that's never short on drama.

With the talented veteran club off to a Western Conference-worst 1-4 start after a winless preseason, Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak and owner Jim Buss abruptly dismissed Brown, informing the players during their morning shootaround.

Bickerstaff ran the Lakers as the interim coach, but the veteran NBA bench boss isn't likely to be a candidate for the full-time job. Kupchak is searching for a replacement, possibly making a selection before the Lakers' next game on Sunday against Sacramento.

The Lakers' crowd quickly made its choice known: A chant of "We want Phil!" rose out of the stands while Bryant shot a free throw in the third quarter.

Phil Jackson, the 11-time NBA champion coach who won five rings in two previous stints running the Lakers, is near the top of Kupchak's list again, the GM acknowledged. Mike D'Antoni, the former Knicks and Suns coach, also is thought to be a prime candidate.

Dwight Howard had six points and eight rebounds while playing just 24 minutes for the Lakers in his ongoing return from offseason back surgery. Steve Nash, the other major addition to the club, watched from behind the Lakers' bench, missing his fourth straight game with a small fracture in his leg.

Brown never got the chance to integrate the two stars into his new offense while they were dogged by health issues. Kupchak and Buss still needed to see more success than the Lakers managed in the past six weeks, particularly on defense ? and Los Angeles limited the Warriors to 33.7-percent shooting.

The Lakers' offensive struggles evaporated in the third quarter while they leaped to an 18-point lead over the undermanned Warriors, who struggled to contend inside without injured center Andrew Bogut.

Darius Morris had career highs of 10 points and five rebounds while playing the majority of the Lakers' minutes at point guard. Los Angeles' reserves have been largely ineffective during Brown's tenure, but Morris and Hill led a spirited effort against the Warriors, outscoring their counterparts with Golden State 37-17.

NOTES: Lakers F Devin Ebanks was inactive after getting arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs early Friday morning. Rookie Darius Johnson-Odom made his NBA debut in the final minutes. ... Warriors C Andris Biedrins came up roughly 2 feet short on an airballed free throw in the first half. The Latvian veteran has a career free-throw shooting percentage just over 50 percent. ... Brown went 42-29 with the Lakers, coaching them to the second round of the playoffs during the strike-shortened season before his abbreviated start to this fall.

Sometimes it is easy to forget all the great things that family members are and do for one another. So this week why not take a little time and have a Family?Complement Night. ?This is very easy to do and could be?something?you do once a month or a couple of times a year just to let everyone know just how wonderful they are and how special they are in your family.

All you do is give each family member a sheet of paper and tell them that have to write 3 complements or nice things about each other member of the family. For smaller children you can let them draw pictures of their?complements or help them. When everyone is done with their writing each person takes turns reading out their list thus giving each family member?complements.

Syrian air force on offensive after failed truce

AMMAN (Reuters) - Syrian warplanes bombed rebel targets with renewed intensity on Tuesday after the end of a widely ignored four-day truce between President Bashar al-Assad's forces and insurgents.

International envoy Lakhdar Brahimi has said he will pursue peace efforts despite the failure of his appeal for a pause in fighting for the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday.

But it is unclear how he can find any compromise acceptable to Assad, who seems determined to keep power whatever the cost, and mostly Sunni Muslim rebels equally intent on toppling him.

Major powers and Middle Eastern countries are divided over how to end the 19-month-old conflict which has cost an estimated 32,000 dead, making it one of the bloodiest of Arab revolts that have ousted entrenched leaders in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

Violence raged again on Tuesday when the Syrian air force pounded the outskirts of the central city of Homs, where rebels have besieged an army base, and the northern rebel-held town of Maarat al-Numan, which straddles the Damascus-Aleppo highway.

Rebels have been fighting army bases in al-Hamdanitya and Wadi al-Deif, on the outskirts of Maarat al-Numan.

Some activists said 28 civilians had been killed in the latest air raids on Maarat al-Numan and released video footage of men retrieving a toddler's body from a flattened building.

The men cursed Assad as they dragged the dead girl, dressed in a colorful overall, from the debris. The footage could not be independently verified.

The military has shelled and bombed Maarat al-Numan, 300 km (188 miles) north of Damascus, since rebels took it last month.

"The rebels have evacuated their positions inside Maarat al-Numaan since the air raids began. They are mostly on the frontline south of the town," activist Mohammed Kanaan said.

Maarat al-Numan and other Sunni towns in northwestern Idlib province are mostly hostile to Assad's ruling system, dominated by his minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam.

"WE'LL FIX IT FOR YOU"

Warplanes again bombed eastern suburbs of Damascus and the army fired heavy barrages of mortar bombs into the district of Hammouria, killing at least eight people, activists said.

One video showed a young girl in Hammouria with a large shrapnel wound in her forehead sitting dazed while a doctor said: "Don't worry dear, we'll fix it for you."

Two rebels were killed and 10 wounded at al-Mubarkiyeh, a village 6 km (4 miles) south of Homs, where rebels have besieged a compound guarding a tank maintenance facility, activists said.

Opposition sources said the facility had been used to shell Sunni villages near the Lebanese border.

"The warplanes hit al-Mubarkiyeh five times this morning. Army bulldozers had already razed the village in March," said activist Nader al-Husseini by telephone from near the area.

Syria's military, stretched thin by the struggle to keep control, has increasingly used air power against opposition areas, including those in the main cities of Damascus and Aleppo. Insurgents lack effective anti-aircraft weapons.

There was no word on Syrian army casualties in the fighting.

Divided world powers have been unable to halt the violence, with Russia, China and Shi'ite Iran backing Assad, while Western nations and Sunni states in the region support the uprising.

The prime minister of the Gulf state of Qatar told al-Jazeera television late on Monday that Syria's conflict was not a civil war but "a war of annihilation licensed firstly by the Syrian government and secondly by the international community".

Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani said some of those responsible were on the U.N. Security Council, a clear reference to Russia and China which have vetoed three Western-backed U.N. draft resolutions condemning Assad.

He said that the West was not doing enough to stop the violence and that the United States would be in "paralysis" for two or three weeks during its presidential election.
