(AP) ? The number of people unemployed across the 17 countries that use the euro hit a record high in June, official figures showed Tuesday, in a stark reminder that Europe's debt crisis has ramifications beyond the financial markets.

Eurostat, the EU's statistics office, said 17.801 million people were out of work in the eurozone in June. That was 123,000 more than May, and is the highest level since the euro was formed in 1999. The increase was the 14th in a row and means that around 2.25 million people have lost their jobs since April 2011.

Despite the increase, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in June was unchanged at a record 11.2 percent. Without Germany's relatively-low unemployment rate of 5.4 percent, the wider figures would be much worse.

Even then, the eurozone unemployment is nearly three percentage points higher than the U.S.'s equivalent 8.2 percent. Europe's unemployment rate for May had originally been estimated at 11.1 percent.

"Another horrible set of labor market data for the eurozone, which bodes ill for consumer spending and growth prospects," said Howard Archer, chief European economist at IHS Global Insight.

The figures will add to the pressure on policymakers to get a grip of the debt crisis, which has hit investor confidence in the eurozone, forced five countries to seek external aid and pushed companies to cut their staff numbers.

The 17 countries that use the euro are struggling as economies across the region face deepening recessions. Spain and Italy, the two chief trouble spots, are threatened with a financial collapse that could tear the 13-year old currency union apart and rock the global economy.

Hopes have risen over the past week ? at least in financial markets ? that Europe is preparing new measures to handle the crisis. Last week, European Central Bank president Mario Draghi said the bank "is ready to do what it takes to preserve the euro. Believe me, it will be enough."

Those comments raised expectations that, at the very least, the ECB will ramp up its bond-buying program in the hope of keeping a lid on Spanish and Italian borrowing rates. Such a move would reduce the economic uncertainty surrounding a country, helping it to get its finances under control.

The ECB meets this Thursday to decide on its benchmark interest rate. It could use this opportunity to announce any other measures.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Federal Reserve meets Wednesday and could also decide to take action to stimulate a weakening economy ? such as embarking on another round of quantitative easing, which is designed to free up the flow of money in the U.S. economy.

"Irrespective of what happens on Thursday and whether Draghi delivers or not, the economic data out of Europe is nothing short of woeful," said Michael Hewson, markets analyst at CMC Markets.

It's particularly grim in Spain, which is at the forefront of Europe's debt crisis concerns. It had the highest unemployment rate across the eurozone of 24.8 percent. Greece's rate was not far behind at 22.5 percent, though the latest figures available are for April. In Greece and Spain, every other person aged under 25 is unemployed.

Many countries that use the euro, including France and Italy, also have double-digit unemployment rates.

Even if new anti-crisis measures are to be announced this week, many analysts think the eurozone appears headed for recession.

Germany, Europe's biggest economy, is showing increasing signs of coming off the boil. With growth dropping sharply and demand for its high-value exports set to fall, German unemployment is expected to start rising again.

Figures earlier from Germany's Federal Labor Agency showed the unadjusted jobless rate climbing from 6.6 percent in June to 6.8 percent in July as the typical seasonal increase of school-leavers signing on for unemployment benefits was reinforced by a gradual slowing in the labor market.

Elsewhere, Eurostat revealed Tuesday that inflation was unchanged at 2.4 percent in July. Though that remains above the ECB's mandated target of keeping price increases just below 2 percent, the recent trend has been downward and analysts expect that to continue.

A stagnating economy and rising unemployment, which combine to keep a lid on wage increases, are expected to push inflation back below target over the coming months. Lower energy inflation is also expected to ease inflationary pressures.

This opens the door for the ECB to cut its benchmark rate below its current record low of 0.75 percent in addition to any anti-crisis measures it announces.

Israel to end draft exemptions for ultra-Orthodox

JERUSALEM (AP) ? In an step that could intensify a major rift among Israelis, the defense minister on Tuesday ordered the army to prepare for a universal draft of ultra-Orthodox Jewish men.

Many in the insular and rapidly growing community say they would rather go to jail than comply with an end to the decades-long draft exemptions that have caused increasing outrage in the country.

Ehud Barak gave defense officials a month to craft a plan to put the new draft procedure into practice, trying to buy time in a last-ditch effort to find an agreed solution. His order came just hours before the expiration of a law that has granted tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews exemptions from military duty and followed a Supreme Court ruling against extending that arrangement.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Israel's Channel 2 TV Tuesday night that the army would begin widening its list of recruits immediately.

"Starting tomorrow, there's a new law about equal service. The Israeli military will decide whom to draft, how many to draft ? and it will draft," Netanyahu pledged.

Ultra-Orthodox leader Meir Porush, a former lawmaker, said drafting his people would unleash a "civil war." He said the military neither needed nor wanted to be flooded with devoutly religious conscripts.

"The Israeli military is not ready, won't be ready and doesn't want to be ready" to draft ultra-Orthodox Jews, Porush said. Privately, some defense officials agreed.

What began 60 years ago as exemptions for a few hundred top rabbinical students to symbolically rebuild the great Jewish houses of learning obliterated in the Nazi Holocaust of World War II has mushroomed ? partly due to a very high birthrate ? into get-out-of-the-army cards for 60,000 able-bodied Israeli adult men. Most other Jews are drafted into the military at age 18, with men serving three years and then decades of yearly reserve duty, and women serving about two years.

The disparity has long grated on the nerves of Israel's secular and modern Orthodox Jewish majority, who have to delay university studies and careers during their service. Meanwhile ultra-Orthodox Jews, who make up about 10 percent of Israel's population, continue their nonstop study of religious tomes, usually to the exclusion of modern subjects like science and foreign languages.

Secular Israelis tend to reject the argument by the ultra-Orthodox that their devotion to Judaism amounts to another type of defense of the country.

The hot dispute over deeply held values reflects the central role of the army in Israeli cultural life. Over the years, the army has been the great melting pot for a country made up largely of immigrants from more than 100 countries, socializing people into the fabric of society, providing language instruction and even remedial high school classes for underprivileged youth, taking on a role far beyond that of military forces in other nations.

The extension of that is the widespread feeling that everyone must serve in the army as matter of societal fairness. Resentment against the ultra-Orthodox for their exemptions has been growing along with their proportion of the population and political clout, as their parties often hold the balance of power in Israel's fractious, multi-party political system, winning outsized budgets for their institutions and subsidies for their people, many of whom do not work.

Since the Supreme Court ruled that the blanket exemptions cannot be continued, there have been repeated demonstrations by Israelis who have served in the army, demanding that ultra-Orthodox Jews be drafted. One activist spent Tuesday in an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood, handing out fake draft notices.

Privately, military officials say they don't need tens of thousands of ill-trained and unskilled ultra-Orthodox Jews in their ranks. While actual numbers are classified, experts say the size of the Israeli army has been cut in recent years as manpower needs recede. One piece of evidence is the steadily dropping maximum age for compulsory reserve duty for men ? 55 in the 1980s, as low as 40 for combat soldiers today. Israel's modern army is turning to high-tech weapons systems that require fewer boots on the ground, even as the nation's population ? and its draft pool of 18-year-olds ? grows.

Barak's Tuesday decree filled a legal vacuum on the status of the draft. The existing law exempting tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox men from serving was due to expire at midnight. Israel's Supreme Court overturned that legislation in February, but it remained in effect as the government struggled to come up with a new formula.

But Netanyahu has been unable to bridge the differences between his secular and ultra-religious coalition partners. Heated negotiations fizzled ? even though Netanyahu himself seemed inclined toward some sort of compromise, such as delaying the draft age for the ultra-Orthodox or drafting only some of them. Earlier this month, the issue cost him his largest coalition partner, the centrist Kadima party, which insisted on universal draft.

In the meantime, parliament has gone into recess until mid-October, putting efforts to formulate a new conscription law on hold.

Shmuel Poppenheim, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish activist, said draft-age men would go to jail en masse to avoid serving in the military.

"If they come in trucks to arrest an entire seminary, no problem," Poppenheim said. "If there is no flexibility on (Barak's) side, religious elders will sit together and declare war."

The ultra-Orthodox defend their position by pointing to their need for an environment that enables a strictly religious lifestyle

Yerach Toker, an aide to ultra-Orthodox lawmaker Moshe Gafni, expressed confidence that Barak would take the ultra-Orthodox community's needs into consideration, saying he had been sensitive to its concerns in the past.

"We hope he will act wisely," Toker said.

Speaking freely: Divine Fatherhood and True Family

You know, lately I cringe every time I see a blog post about the value of fatherhood. Which I see generally because I know too many Reformed folk?not that Lutherans are immune to making claims about male headship, just quieter about it on the whole.

But this morning's epistle, from Ephesians 3, begins with a passage that raises the question front and center. "For this reason," namely the charism of missionary responsibility, in spite of the troubles it brings, "I genuflect before the Father, from whom every family in the heavens and on the earth is so named ...". Which is a play on pater and patria, and which doesn't translate well into English because we lack the pun. It's much like the implication, now stated outright in the series, that civilizations everywhere get the word "doctor" from the Doctor.

So, following on my recent realizations about Barth's anthropology, I want to sketch out, in a Barthian vein, why the nature of family deriving from the Fatherhood of God is not in any way a claim about the value of the human male.

Think about it just a bit. Where do we get the use of "Father" for God? It's not from Jesus; that just incarnates the messianic logic by which the people already used "Father" for God. Jesus as the messianic Son who happens also to be the genuine son is simply the fulfillment of an old and perpetual promise in a new way. He uses language for God that his audience already accepts without question. As does Paul. "God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ." It's formulaic. How did it get that way?

If you look through the Pentateuch and the Deuteronomistic History, you'll find that the terms "God" and "father" are more distantly related. The standard reference is to YHWH as "the Lord God of our fathers." The god of Abraham, and then the god of Isaac, and Jacob; therefore also the god of Israel and Judah, so long as they do not seek other gods than the god of their fathers. God is the origin of the family of the people of God, the one who made "father Abraham" a father, the one whose promise it was that he would become "the father of many peoples."

And God is the one who decides who in the lineage becomes a "father" of the people, too?the story of Jacob is a prime example of the choice against "natural" type. Esau is the male, the son to do his father proud, the masculine heir whose strength secures the well-being of both the family and its future offspring. Except ... Esau is not the strength of the family. No one but God alone is the strength of the people of God. And Esau becomes the father of a family of his own ... but only because God has been good to him, because God has become his strength and his security. God is the god of the fathers of the peoples, and they become families and peoples by right of God's strength and provision, not their own.

So let's get that right: it is active trust in God that makes a family possible. Or, let's say, a just family. The nature of true human family is faith in God. It is so whether this happens to align with our concepts of human nature and natural relationships, or not?and it is emphatically, visibly the case when it does not. Because Abraham became a father before God made him one, by human conspiracy. But the result was discord and injustice. The result was the destruction of a family, a further injustice that only God could rectify?the same God in whose sight Hagar and Ishamel remained, severed from Abraham, and became a family in their own right because of God's providence for them. Abraham's trust, and his love for the son of God's own providence to him, had to be restored through more painful means. How do you redeem the trust of a man whose beloved son you have taken away for his own good? How do you redeem his virtue as a father, for the "other" son he has left?

And so we see that in Abraham God has created the patriarchy, but that this has nothing to do with maleness. It is patriarchy that is not permitted to follow patriarchal principles. It is simply the arche patrias, as suggested in Ephesians 3:14, for God provides in Abraham's faith the principle of all family, and it is not Abraham himself! His fatherhood would not exist were it not for the source of all family, the One whom alone we rightly call Father. And, unlike the Pentateuch and the DtrH, the Psalms and the Prophets follow suit, speaking in poetic language of God as Father, and not just the god of their fathers. And it is in the imagery of God as the Father of the people, and not just the god of their fathers, that we receive from the tradition the logic of messianic sonship. It is in this way that the Covenant Father, from whom Israel inherits, is truly the father of Jesus Christ, the messianic instrument of that inheritance. And it is in this way that, contrary to our nature as gentiles, we have been grafted into the family of God and made participants in true, just family.

And so, if we follow this as Barth follows the true humanity of Christ, we are obliged to say that there is no creaturely, natural basis for family separable from God. There is no lingering remnant of created order in our worldly institutions. Providence works wholly apart from that. It is not the nature of our being human that determines the meaning and construction of family. Family has no natural form, not even the bare reproductive pairing of male and female that describes the nature of human being qua animal life. Male and female God created us, the sole natural distinction within our kind as humanity, but sexual and reproductive realities are not constitutive of family, no matter how euphemistically we might speak of "fathering" a child through genital interaction.

If we look to God as our truth, in fact, family has nothing necessary to do with blood lineage, either. Family comes about by choice, by the election of love. Family, in fact, comes by adoption. Family is constituted, in the Fatherhood of God, by the first and ultimate "Yes" of God to the creature, the affirmation that redeems us from all sin and failure. This is what it means that we are not merely creatures of the Creator, but children of the heavenly Father. This is the nature of true family, as we see it in God.

Neck and Back Pain - Health and Fitness Tips

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Travelling can be very exciting, but it can also be very stressful, especially if it is a long flight. Back or neck pain is nearly unavoidable as a result of sitting in the same (probably cramped) position for hours. Here are some tips to improve your journey.

Reserve a seat on the aisle or at the emergency exit. Either will give you a bit more space and you can get up as often as you feel. Try to book a flight at a time when there will be fewer people on board, as you will have more space in which to stretch out. Do exercises to strengthen your back and core muscles from about a month before the flight. Attend Pilates classes or lift free weights to achieve this.

    Stay relaxed

Have everything packed and ready about two days before departure. Try to be as relaxed and unhurried as possible on the day of the flight. Be on time and relax with a book or magazine while waiting to board. Make sure you are well hydrated before the flight. If you know you will suffer from back pain, take muscle relaxants or pain killers an hour before the flight.

Avoid lifting anything heavy on the day of the flight. Use baggage trolleys and make sure you have packed only what you need in your bags. You should opt for two smaller bags than one big, heavy one. Try to keep your carry-on bag as light as possible; a heavy bag will strain your muscles and be uncomfortable to wrestle into and out of the overhead compartment. If possible, perform some discreet yoga or stretching exercises just before you board.

    Use back support

Once you are seated, adjust your seat to be as comfortable as possible. Try to tilt it back as far as you can; your shoulders should not be pushed forward. Use a pillow or lumber roll to support your lower back and to align your spine correctly. Most flight attendants will be only too happy to supply you with pillows.

Use one behind your neck as well; a U-shaped neck pillow is the best to use. Though all passengers wish they could have comfortable divan beds to sleep on during a flight, they have to make do with what is available.

If you are short, place something under your feet to ensure that your knees form a 90? angle. This will relax your leg muscles and take some of the strain off your back muscles. Use magazines or even your bag to raise your legs.

Once the flight is under way, try to get up and walk or stretch a bit at least once every hour. Touch your toes a few times and stretch your arms above your head. You could even do some stretching exercises in your chair if space allows it.

Make sure to drink enough water during the flight. You could have some light snacks; some people feel much better if they don?t eat much during the flight, instead waiting until after the flight to have a proper meal. This can also help with jet lag.

Some seasoned travellers do not sleep the night before the flight; they take some muscle relaxants and sleep for most of the flight. Use ear plugs and an eye mask to exclude any noise or light. Listening to music using ear plugs also helps to relax you.

Upon arrival, bend your knees when lifting your luggage off the carousel to avoid hurting your back. Do a few stretching exercises as well.

Appcelerator: Developer Interest In Android - Business Insider

Despite the explosive growth of Android's market share, it hasn't won over developers.

In fact, developer interest in Android has been in decline for a year now, according to the latest report from Appcelerator/IDC. They survey over 3,000 developers to get their take on the which platforms are most interesting.

As you can see in the chart below (click to enlarge it) interest in Android has been declining. However, they say, "the recent erosion in developer interest in Android appears to have been arrested." To our eyes it looks like it's still in decline.

Two reasons the decline has slowed down is the huge growth of Android handset sales coupled with Google's "Play" store, which developers hope will rival iTunes, according to the report.

Robin Roberts previewed her upcoming leave of absence from Good Morning America last night, as the anchor will soon be taking a break to undergo treatment for a rare blood disorder.

"It's fascinating-slash-scary how to prepare yourself for something like this," Roberts, who has already survived breast cancer, said at the Television Critics Association press tour.

She will be off the air for awhile, starting late next month, to receive a a bone marrow transplant meant to treat myelodysplastic syndromes, a disease of the blood and bone marrow.

    Robin Roberts on GMA

How is she feeling at the moment? Roberts admitted to "moments of fatigue," but she cited her program's recent ratings as a major elixir.

"The run that we've had has truly energized me," Roberts said. "It's pretty good medicine, I gotta say, to be taking!"

As for the "wonderful friends" who will be occupying this anchor's seat? Roberts said she looks forward to Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric and others sustaining the show's momentum alongside George Stephanopoulos.

We do, too. But we most look forward to the day a happy and healthy Roberts is back in that chair.

Compelling Retail Leasing Opportunities Abound for Tenants in the ...

Despite declining retail vacancy rates, it?s still a tenant?s market throughout the Sacramento Commercial Real Estate landscape. The overall Sacramento retail vacancy rate dropped slightly to 9.8% during the 2nd Quarter of 2012, according to Voit Real Estate Services, who was recently quoted by the Sacramento Bee. This represents the second quarter in a row that commercial retail vacancy ended below 10%. According to the same source, commercial real estate vacancies within the Sacramento submarket of Carmichael reflect a much higher level of 11.3%. This phenomenon of higher retail vacancy rates often creates dramatic opportunities for businesses to sign commercial real estate lease transactions that are quite favorable to tenants.

One recent example involves a franchisee of a national company, who benefitted from a commercial real estate market that currently favors tenants throughout the Sacramento area. In late January 2012, Melisa Nelson acquired her first Curves franchise (ladies fitness gym), which had operated at 4141 Manzanita Ave in Carmichael for almost 10 years. The commercial lease would be expiring only seven months later, so Ms. Nelson had to determine whether to renew the lease for another five years or find a better location. The existing facility was part of a small neighborhood strip center with limited visibility and low traffic that had become mostly vacant with only a handful of tenants remaining in place.

After engaging Brian Jacks with East West Commercial Real Estate of Sacramento for commercial retail leasing representation, Ms. Nelson was presented with several different options that would create a better overall leasing package. In the end, she signed a new commercial retail lease with Tsakopoulos Investments for a 1,400 sq. ft. shop space in Carmichael Village at 4005 Manzanita Ave in Carmichael? right across the street from her former location. Carmichael Village is a large shopping center, anchored by Bel Air, an upscale grocer operated by Raley?s. The center is almost entirely full with complementary tenant uses that will drive more traffic to the Curves franchise. The new location opens September 1, 2012.

In addition to securing a fantastic commercial real estate location with excellent visibility within a very busy and thriving commercial shopping center, Ms. Nelson benefitted in the following financial aspects. Her new combined monthly rent plus landlord expense reimbursements were reduced by 12%, as compared to her former lease. In addition, she received three months of free rent plus 45 days early occupancy for signing a 53-month lease.

In October 2011, the Sacramento office of East West Commercial Real Estate signed a renewal lease for a separate Curves franchise in Antelope, which resulted in a 20% reduction in base rent, plus 50% off (half rent) for the first 6 months of a 3-year lease.

The latter example suggests that while the best commercial real estate deals in Sacramento may have passed, there are still great opportunities to negotiate terrific retail leases within the Sacramento commercial real estate sector.

House Prices, Interest Rates and Debt Growth Implications ? Debt ...

HELP ME HELP MYSELF! by eyewashdesign: A. GoldenThese future risks should have been explained by the media in discussing the recent Equifax study. Many people already have significant debt problems and they should be looking at options to solve their debt. A growth, even if a slowing growth, in their debt loads is not necessarily a good thing. The Bank of Canada and the Canadian federal government know this, as they have been very busy of late telling Canadians to take control of their debt and to stop adding to it. This is one of the reasons that the government recently made mortgage rules more restrictive. As people were not heeding the call to control their debt, the government felt a need to put in place new rules to make it harder for people to take on more debt. Unfortunately, this does not give people options to help deal with the historically high debt loads Canadians are now carrying.

A Big Debt Problem, A Small Debt Solution by Daniel Luzer

We will try to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of IVAs here. An IVA is a legal agreement between you and your creditors. So long as you meet IVA criteria it allows you to repay what you can afford each month, usually over a five year period. At the end of the IVA term, assuming you have completed the arrangement as agreed, the remainder of your unsecured debt within the IVA will be legally written off and you will be free of debt. Monthly contributions to the IVA will be based what you can afford after other essential costs such as mortgage, utility bills and food etc. have been taken into consideration. There are of course advantages and disadvantages to IVAs which makes seeking advice on an appropriate debt solution worthwhile. One particular advantage is affordable, reduced repayments. Payments are fixed at the start of the arrangement to give peace of mind that you can afford to continue with the proposal for the agreed term, usually five years. Indeed the fixed term is also attractive as individuals can see an end to their debt problems. This is in comparison to less regulated debt management plans which, in many cases, have no fixed term or end date. Entering into an IVA takes away creditors rights to take legal action to enforce repayment of the debt so long as payments are upheld throughout the term of the proposal. It also stops penalties such as interest charges being applied. However, as with most things there are also a number of disadvantages to an IVA and these must be highlighted to individuals so they are entering into an agreement armed with all required knowledge. An IVA is a particularly good debt solution for some but may well not be for others. IVAs deal with unsecured debts such as loans and credit cards but not secured debts such as mortgages. Mortgages and other secured debts must be funded outside of the arrangement and usual stipulations still apply to the mortgage where failure to make regular payments on time can lead to your home being repossessed. However, if you are struggling or indeed missing payments at this stage, an IVA can allow funds to be concentrated on these essential commitments. One of the main restrictions when entering an IVA will be the ability to borrow more whilst the IVA is in progress. Further debt is not allowed without the permission of the Supervisor (Insolvency Practitioner) of your IVA. Additionally, a property you own may need to be revalued towards the end of the IVA with any realisable equity possibly having to be brought into the arrangement. In many cases however, this equity may not be realisable if the amount of equity is relatively small or costs are prohibitive. It is possible where equity cannot be realised, that the term of the IVA is extended a further 12 months. An IVA is a method of insolvency, and will impact on your credit rating. However, the fact you are considering an IVA in the first place means it is highly likely that your credit rating is already in need of repair. A record of your IVA will remain on your credit history for six years after it begins. This means that you will have a clean credit history a year after your IVA has finished (assuming it`s a five year IVA). For professional, debt solutions advice, contact us today we offer personal services to suit the needs of each of our clients. Money Advice Service: IFAs continue to misunderstand us

This highlights yet again that MAS and its board are divorced from the real world. After spending millions MAS has a thid rate website and the recent ?enhancements? are little more than a mild plagiarism of moneysavingexpert and more useless calculators, plus the one calculator I did find semi useful, annuity rates, is now far more cumbersome to use post facelift. Recently published accounts show MAS is paying top whack salaries to its senior management who obviously have little grasp on how to deliver a cost effective service that will actually help the public. I don?t think IFAs are worried that MAS is stepping on their toes (nowhere near an issue its current form), they?re just frustrated to see the FSA gravy train continue with millions more being poured down the MAS drain. Good to see the wildly overpaid Toby Hobman is stepping down, but Mr Lemos continues to pocket ?84k a year for chairing this mess ? proof that academics don?t necessarily make good managers or businessmen. Perhaps he should follow Mr Hobman and throw in the towel too, with both being replaced by individuals with significantly more hands on experience of helping the public with their money and running a proper business. I have no faith matters will improve and expect MAS will be shut down within 2 years having squandered a fortune. Meanwhile, Money Marketing should run a story on possible candidates for MAS CEO, I?m sure the industry would be better at picking someone than Mr Lemos & co.

Ingenious Ways to Get Money for Debt Repayment

I suggest that you start doing this by writing down your everyday expenses and see which ones you can try to live without (or at least for the mean time). Check your mobile plan to cut off unnecessary phone features. Downgrade your cable service. Run all errands on a single trip to cut gas expenses. Move to a cheaper apartment, or try to get a housemate. ?If possible, avoid eating out and cook at home. Take advantage of sales and coupons.

How to Help Once We're Home - THE VILLAGE - blog*spot

If you haven't heard of Jen Hatmaker you've got to check her out! ?She is a hilarious author with a love for God and a passion for orphans. ?A few months back I ran across a post she had written on her blog about how to help someone going through adoption! ?I saved it in my favorites for when we got closer - - well, we are getting PRETTY close (3 1/2 days!!!!) so I thought I should post!

FYI - I was just going to post how to help beyond the airport but since we are still in the wait stage for "B" I just left both in! ?Enjoy!

HOW TO BE THE VILLAGE - c/o Jen Hatmaker (Check out her blog here!)

Let?s break this down into two categories:

    Supporting Families Before the Airport

Your friends are adopting. They?re in the middle of dossiers and home studies, and most of them are somewhere in the middle of Waiting Purgatory. Please let me explain something about WP: It sucks in every way. Oh sure, we try to make it sound better than it feels by using phrases like ?We?re trusting in God?s plan? and ?God is refining me? and ?Sovereignty trumps my feelings? and crazy bidness like that. But we are crying and aching and getting angry and going bonkers when you?re not watching. It?s hard. It hurts. It feels like an eternity even though you can see that it is not. It is harder for us to see that, because many of us have pictures on our refrigerators of these beautiful darlings stuck in an orphanage somewhere while we?re bogged down in bureaucracy and delays.?

How can you help? By not saying or doing these things:

    1. ?God?s timing is perfect!? (Could also insert: ?This is all God?s plan!? ?God is in charge!?) As exactly true as this may be, when you say it to a waiting parent, we want to scratch your eyebrows off and make you eat them with a spoon. Any trite answer that minimizes the struggle is as welcomed as a sack of dirty diapers. You are voicing something we probably already believe while not acknowledging that we are hurting and that somewhere a child is going to bed without a mother again. Please never say this again. Thank you.

    2. ?Are you going to have your own kids?? (Also in this category: ?You?ll probably get pregnant the minute your adoption clears!? ?Since this is so hard, why don?t you just try to have your own kids?? ?Well, at least you have your own kids.?) The subtle message here is: You can always have legitimate biological kids if this thing tanks. It places adoption in the Back-up Plan Category,?where it does not belong for us. When we flew to Ethiopia with our first travel group from our agency, out of 8 couples, we were the only parents with biological kids. The other 7 couples chose adoption first. Several of them were on birth control.?Adoption counts as real parenting, and if you believe stuff Jesus said, it might even be closer to the heart of God than regular old procreation. (Not to mention the couples that grieved through infertility already. So when you say, ?Are you going to have your own kids?? to a woman who tried for eight years, then don?t be surprised if she pulls your beating heart out like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.)

    3. For those of you in Christian community, it is extremely frustrating to hear: ?Don?t give up on God!? or ?Don?t lose faith!? It implies that we are one nanosecond away from tossing our entire belief system in the compost pile because we are acting sad or discouraged. It?s condescending and misses the crux of our emotions. I can assure you, at no point in our story did we think about kicking Jesus to the curb,?but we still get to cry tears and feel our feelings, folks. Jesus did. And I?m pretty sure he went to heaven when he died.?

    4. We?re happy to field your questions about becoming a transracial family or adopting a child of another race, but please don?t use this moment to trot out your bigotry. (Cluelessness is a different thing, and we try to shrug that off. Like when someone asked about our Ethiopian kids, ?Will they be black?? Aw, sweet little dum-dum.) The most hurtful thing we heard during our wait was from a black pastor who said, ?Whatever you do, don?t change their last name to Hatmaker, because they are NOT Hatmakers. They?ll never be Hatmakers. They are African.??What the????I wonder if he?d launch the same grenade if we adopted white kids from Russia? If you?d like to know what we?re learning about raising children of another race or ask respectful, legitimate questions, by all means, do so. We care about this and take it seriously, and we realize we will traverse racial landmines with our family. You don?t need to point out that we are adopting black kids and we are, in fact, white. We?ve actually already thought of that.

    5. Saying nothing is the opposite bad. I realize with blogs like this one, you can get skittish on how to talk to a crazed adopting Mama without getting under her paper-thin skin or inadvertently offending her. I get it. (We try hard not to act so hypersensitive. Just imagine that we are paper-pregnant with similar hormones surging through our bodies making us cry at Subaru commercials just like the 7-month preggo sitting next to us. And look at all this weight we?ve gained.?See?) But acting like we?re not adopting or struggling or waiting or hoping or grieving is not helpful either. If I was pregnant with a baby in my belly, and no one ever asked how I was feeling or how much longer or is his nursery ready or can we plan a shower, I would have to audition new friend candidates immediately.?

Here?s what we would love to hear Before the Airport:

    1. Just kind, normal words of encouragement. Not the kind that assume we are one breath away from atheism. Not the kind that attempt to minimize the difficulties and tidy it all up with catchphrases.?We don?t actually need for you to fix our wait.?We just want you to be our friend and acknowledge that the process is hard and you care about us while we?re hurting. That is GOLD. I was once having lunch with my friend Lynde when AWAA called with more bad news about Ben?s case, and I laid my head down on the table in the middle of Galaxy Caf? and bawled. Having no idea what to do with such a hot mess, she just cried with me. Thank you for being perfect that day, Lynde.?

    2. Your questions are welcomed! We don?t mind telling you about the court system in Ethiopia or the in-country requirements in Nicaragua or the rules of the foster system. We?re glad to talk about adoption, and we?re thankful you care. I assure you we didn?t enter adoption lightly, so sharing details of this HUGE PIECE OF OUR LIVES is cathartic. Plus, we want you to know more because we?re all secretly hoping you?ll adopt later. (This is not true.) (Yes it is.)

    3. When you say you?re praying for us and our waiting children, and you actually really are, not only does that soothe our troubled souls, but according to Scripture, it activates the heavens. So pray on, dear friends. Pray on. That is always the right thing to say. And please actually do it. We need people to stand in the gap for us when we are too tired and discouraged to keep praying the same words another day.?

    4. If you can, please become telepathic to determine which days we want to talk about adoption and which days we?d rather you just show up on our doorstep with fresh figs from the Farmer?s Market (thanks, Katie) or kidnap us away in the middle of the day to go see?Bridesmaids. Sometimes we need you to make us laugh and remember what it feels like to be carefree for a few hours. If you?re not sure which day we?re having, just pre-buy movie tickets and show up with the figs, and when we answer the door, hold them all up and ask, ?Would you like to talk for an hour uninterrupted about waiting for a court date?? We?ll respond to whichever one fits.?

    Supporting Families After the Airport

You went to the airport. The baby came down the escalator to cheers and balloons. The long adoption journey is over and your friends are home with their new baby / toddler / twins / siblings / teenager. Everyone is happy. Maybe Fox News even came out and filmed the big moment and ?your friend? babbled like an idiot and didn?t say one constructive word about adoption and also she looked really sweaty during her interview. (Really? That happened to me too. Weird.)?

How can you help? By not saying or doing these things:?

    1. I mean this nicely, but don?t come over for awhile. Most of us are going to hole up in our homes with our little tribe and attempt to create a stable routine without a lot of moving parts. This is not because we hate you; it?s because we are trying to establish the concept of ?home? with our newbies, and lots of strangers coming and going makes them super nervous and unsure, especially strangers who are talking crazy language to them and trying to touch their hair.?

    2. Please do not touch, hug, kiss, or use physical affection with our kids for a few months. We absolutely know your intentions are good, but attachment is super tricky with abandoned kids, and they have had many caregivers, so when multiple adults (including extended family) continue to touch and hold them in their new environment, they become confused about who to bond with. This actually delays healthy attachment egregiously. It also teaches them that any adult or stranger can touch them without their permission, and believe me, many adoptive families are working HARD to undo the damage already done by this position. Thank you so much for respecting these physical boundaries.?

    3. For the next few months, do not assume the transition is easy. For 95% of us, it so is not. And this isn?t because our family is dysfunctional or our kids are lemons, but because?this phase is so very hard on everyone. I can?t tell you how difficult it was to constantly hear: ?You must be so happy!? and ?Is life just so awesome now that they?re here??? and ?Your family seems just perfect now!? I wanted that to be true so deeply, but I had no idea how to tell you that our home was actually a Trauma Center. (I did this in a passive aggressive way by writing?this blog, which was more like ?An Open Letter to Everyone Who Knows Us and Keeps Asking Us How Happy We Are.?) Starting with the right posture with your friends ??this is hard right now?? will totally help you become a safe friend to confide in / break down in front of / draw strength from.?

    4. Do not act shocked if we tell you how hard the early stages are. Do not assume adoption was a mistake. Do not worry we have ruined our lives. Do not talk behind our backs about how terribly we?re doing and how you?re worried that we are suicidal. Do not ask thinly veiled questions implying that we are obviously doing something very, very wrong. Do not say things like, ?I was so afraid it was going to be like this? or ?Our other friends didn?t seem to have these issues at all.? Just let us struggle. Be our friends in the mess of it. We?ll get better.?

    5. If we?ve adopted older kids, please do not ask them if they ?love America so much? or are ?so happy to live in Texas.? It?s this simple: adoption is born from horrible loss. In an ideal world, there would be no adoption, because our children would be with their birth families, the way God intended. I?ll not win any points here, but I bristle when people say, ?Our adopted child was chosen for us by God before the beginning of time.? No he wasn?t. He was destined for his birth family. God did not create these kids to belong to us. He didn?t decide that they should be born into poverty or disease or abandonment or abuse and despair aaaaaaaall so they could finally make it into our homes, where God intended them to be. No. We are a very distant Plan B. Children are meant for their birth families, same as my biological kids were meant for mine. Adoption is one possible answer to a very real tragedy??after?it has already happened, not?before?as the impetus for abandonment. There is genuine grief and sorrow when your biological family is disrupted by death and poverty, and our kids have endured all this and more. So when you ask my 8-year-old if he is thrilled to be in Texas, please understand that he is not. He misses his country, his language, his food, his family. Our kids came to us in the throes of grief, as well they should. Please don?t make them smile and lie to you about how happy they are to be here.?

    6. Please do not disappear. If I thought the waiting stage was hard, it does not even hold the barest candle to what comes after the airport.?Not. The. Barest. Candle.?Never have I felt so isolated and petrified. Never have I been so overwhelmed and exhausted. We need you after the airport way more than we ever needed you before. I know you?re scared of us, what with our dirty hair and wild eyes and mystery children we?re keeping behind closed doors so they don?t freak out more than they already have, but please find ways to stick around. Call. Email. Check in. Post on our Facebook walls. Send us funny cards. Keep this behavior up for longer than six days.?

Here?s what we would love to hear or experience After the Airport:

    1. Cook for your friends. Put together a meal calendar and recruit every person who even remotely cares about them. We didn?t cook dinners for one solid month, and folks, that may have single handedly saved my sanity. There simply are not words to describe how exhausting and overwhelming those first few weeks are, not to mention the lovely jetlag everyone came home with. And if your friends adopted domestically right up the street, this is all still true, minus the jetlag.?

    2. If we have them, offer to take our biological kids for an adventure or sleepover. Please believe me: their lives just got WHACKED OUT, and they need a break, but their parents can?t give them one because they are 1.) cleaning up pee and poop all day, 2.) holding screaming children, 3.) spending all their time at doctors? offices, and 4.) falling asleep in their clothes at 8:15pm. Plus, they are in lockdown mode with the recently adopted, trying to shield them from the trauma that is Walmart.?

    3. Thank you for getting excited with us over our little victories. I realize it sounds like a very small deal when we tell you our kindergartener is now staying in the same room as the dog, but if you could?ve seen the epic level of freakoutedness this dog caused her for three weeks, you would understand that?this is really something. When you encourage us over our incremental progress, it helps. You remind us that we ARE moving forward and these little moments are worth celebrating. If we come to you spazzing out, please remind us where we were a month ago. Force us to acknowledge their gains. Be a cheerleader for the healing process.?

    4. Come over one night after our kids are asleep and sit with us on our porch. Let me tell you: we are all lonely in those early weeks. We are home, home, home, home, home. Good-bye, date nights. Good-bye, GNO?s. Good-bye, spontaneous anything. Good-bye, church. Good-bye, big public outings. Good-bye, community group. Good-bye, nightlife. So please bring some community to our doorstep. Bring friendship back into our lives. Bring adult conversation and laughter. And bring an expensive bottle of wine.?

    5. If the shoe fits, tell adopting families how their story is affecting yours. If God has moved in you over the course of our adoption, whether before the airport or after, if you?ve made a change or a decision, if somewhere deep inside a fire was lit, tell us, because it is spiritual water on dry souls. There is nothing more encouraging than finding out God is using our families for greater kingdom work, beautiful things we would never know or see. We gather the holy moments in our hands every day, praying for eyes to see God?s presence, his purposes realized in our story. When you put more holy moments in our hands to meditate on, we are drawn deeper into the Jesus who led us here.?

Here?s one last thing: As you watch us struggle and celebrate and cry and flail, we also want you to know that adoption is beautiful, and a thousand times we?ve looked at each other and said, ?What if we would?ve said no?? God invited us into something monumental and lovely, and we would?ve missed endless moments of glory had we walked away. We need you during these difficult months of waiting and transitioning, but we also hope you see that we serve a faithful God who heals and actually sets the lonely in families, just like He said He would. And even through the tears and tantrums (ours), we look at our children and marvel that God counted us worthy to raise them. We are humbled. We?ve been gifted with a very holy task, and when you help us rise to the occasion, you have an inheritance in their story; your name will be counted in their legacy.?

Because that day you brought us pulled pork tacos was the exact day I needed to skip dinner prep and hold my son on the couch for an hour, talking about Africa and beginning to bind up his emotional wounds. When you kidnapped me for two hours and took me to breakfast, I was at the very, very, absolute end that morning, but I came home renewed, able to greet my children after school with fresh love and patience. When you loved on my big kids and offered them sanctuary for a night, you kept the family rhythm in sync at the end of a hard week.?

Thank you for being the village. You are so important.?

Thank you all for your love and support along the way to bringing Nahome into our family! ?Please don't leave us now - this is when we need your prayers, love, encouragement, and support the most!
