Romijn Told Lawrence To Ignore X-men Make-up Advice

Actress Jennifer Lawrence turned to Rebecca Romijn before taking over her role in X-men: First Class - and asked for tips on how to deal with sitting in make-up for hours on end.

The Winter's Bone star is set to play blue-skinned shape shifter Mystique in the prequel, a role which Romijn made famous in the first three movies and requires the actress to be spray-painted blue every day.

And Lawrence asked the Ugly Betty star for advice on how to feel less restricted by the role's heavy cosmetics - with Romijn telling her to ignore all the strict warnings given by the make-up artists.

Lawrence tells The Washington Post, "Her advice was mostly just kind of, 'Don't worry about it. Don't listen to what they tell you.' Because they tell you not to drink alcohol or eat spicy food, because they remove the make-up with alcohol. And she just said, 'Don't listen to that. It will drive you crazy.'"

Our last word in business today is actually a conversation one that went on for nearly a half a century between a beloved New York restaurant and its patrons.

Last night, many prominent New Yorkers turned out to say farewell to Elaine's, a gathering spot known more for its social scene than it's scaloppini.

From member station WNYC, Kathleen Horan has this story.

KATHLEEN HORAN: For decades, Elaine's attracted a who's who of writers, actors, sports stars and politicians, as well as neighborhood regulars. For much of that time, it was a place to see and be seen. Even when it stopped being quite as hip, many kept coming back because the proprietor herself, Elaine Kaufman. Known for her one-liners and lack of pretension, she was always holding court. Kaufman died nearly 6 months ago and business dropped off.

Longtime regular, writer Gay Talese said he turned up to pay his respects.

Mr. GAY TALESE (Writer): Elaine died sometime ago, as we know, and now the restaurant is going to die and all the rest of us are going to be a little more dead without Elaine. So I think we're here as a kind of celebration and a wake at the same time.

HORAN: Over the course of the evening, as the line outside continued to grow, many boldface names squeezed in to mingle and reminisce - actor Alec Baldwin, former police commissioner Bill Bratton and writer and sexpert Dr. Ruth Westheimer. She said the place won't easily be forgotten because it offered a sense of real connection.

Dr. RUTH WESTHEIMER (Sex Therapist): For a city like New York, where there are so many lonely people, this was like a living room, like a salon. You could come here and you knew that you would find someone to talk to. The celebrities are one thing, but it's mainly the conversation.

HORAN: The buildings that house the restaurant that's been immortalized in a Woody Allen film, a Billy Joel song and the minds of countless New Yorkers have been put up for sale.

He walks onto the black-and-white screen a few minutes after midnight wearing a zebra-striped leisure suit. There is a quick thought that something might be wrong with the television this late at night. Static of some kind in the neighborhood. An electrical malfunction. No, the stripes only move when Evel Knievel moves. This is his outfit.

He is a one-man test pattern. The collar on the leisure suit is exaggerated, Edwardian, huge. The pants flare out at the end, bell-bottoms. His white leather kick-ass boots, which stick out from the edges of the bell-bottoms, would be suitable for either a well- dressed gang fight or an open- ended night in a Las Vegas cocktail lounge. The stripes on the leisure suit ? back to the stripes ? are random, run every which way, as if somebody had splashed white paint across a black background. The effect is dramatic. He is a work of modern art, certainly a piece of work, a cat on the prowl.

He is here to be on The Dick Cavett Show. He has dressed for the occasion.

"My next guest is an incredible character," Cavett tells the studio audience at the Elysee Theater on West Fifty- eighth Street in New York City.

He's a motorcycle daredevil driver. All his life he's been doing death-defying feats. Death has nearly defied him several times. His longest jump was fifty yards, a fifty-yard jump over the fountains of Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. This jump did not go well. You may have read about it. Or seen some still photos of it. He has some film with him of what happened. He seems to spend his life, or what he has left of it, it sometimes seems to me, seeing what he can do to shorten it. Incredible things he does . . . Will you welcome the legendary Evel Knievel.

The Bob Rosengarden Orchestra plays "Daisy Bell" in the background, better known as "Bicycle Built for Two," a family standard written in 1892. The audience applauds. The "incredible character," the "motorcycle daredevil driver," walks across the stage with a slight limp in his left leisure-suited leg.

First impression: he is pool-hall handsome, good chin, prominent nose, steady eyes, sandy hair combed back, semi-serious sideburns. Self-confidence is not a problem. Second impression: if he came to the front door to pick up your daughter, left the engine running in the flashy car outside, he would make you nervous. Third impression: your daughter would be thrilled.

He shakes hands with the shorter Cavett, then turns and shakes hands with a middle-aged black man who wears glasses under a modest Afro. The middle-aged black man is jazz trumpet player Dizzy Gillespie, already finished, the first guest of the night. Dizzy Gillespie! Dizzy is smoking a cigarette.

Everyone sits down.

"How are you?" Cavett asks from behind his desk, then immediately laughs at the absurdity of his own first question.

How are you? How are you? Evel Knievel? How do you ask Evel Knievel, "How are you?" Signifi cant stretches of his life have been spent in intensive care units. He has been in more hospitals than Dr. Christian Barnard or Marcus Welby, MD. He has more stitches in him than a Raggedy Ann doll, enough metal for a full Erector Set. How are you? His X-rays are his calling cards.

"Have you ever been hurt?" Cavett says, flummoxed.

"Yes, several times," Evel Knievel replies. "Several times."

The year is 1971. The month is August.

The interview has begun.

The Dick Cavett Show is the ABC entry in a three-network talk show race for the attention of the insomniacs of America at 11:30 p.m. Johnny Carson talks behind a desk at NBC. Merv Griffi n does the same at CBS. The Cavett show is third in the late-night ratings, but seen as the intellectual alternative. Cavett attracts the most interesting guests, the newsmakers, the provocative people of the day. The talkers actually talk rather than wink, blink, sing a song, tell a joke as they promote their next endeavor.

Groucho Marx previously sat in the brown leather chair at the side of this desk. Jimi Hendrix. Alfred Hitchcock. Kirk Douglas. Sonny and/ or Cher. Orson Welles. Satchel Paige. Bill Russell. Marlon Brando. Lester Maddox. John Kerry, the young Vietnam War resister. Jim Brown. Ingmar Bergman. Woody Allen. Joni Mitchell. Ann Landers. Truman Capote. Little Richard. Janis Joplin. Ralph Nader. Art Garfunkel. Dick Clark. Bette Davis. The list continues. John Lennon and Yoko Ono will be here within a month.

The thirty-two-year-old man in the zebra-striped leisure suit (who has been hurt several times) fits the chair as well as any of them. He is another emerging oversized figure of the moment. The movie about his life, starring George Hamilton, is in theaters across the country. He has played Madison Square Garden, the Astrodome, the Los Angeles Coliseum, a long list of arenas and stadiums and state fairs. He has talked, soared, flipped, bounced, skidded, and crashed his way into the public conversation.

Cavett: Gee, I've heard so much about you . . . do I detect a slight hesitation in your walk?

Knievel: When I got hurt in Las Vegas, I pushed my hips through my pelvis. That's what's known as a central protrusion fracture. And my left leg was pulled out. They put you in traction, pull you. That left hip did not come out. However, I've missed a jump like the Caesars Palace jump nine times in five years. And as a result of that, I've been operated on some twelve times . . .

Cavett: When they say you've broken every bone in your body, they actually don't mean every bone . . . in your ear and everywhere . . . but have you broken over a dozen?

Knievel: Oh, yes. I imagine all the major bones except my neck . . .

Cavett: All the major bones . . .

Knievel: Both legs. Both arms. My back twice last year.

Cavett: Where's the fun?

No one ever has done exactly what Evel Knievel does for a living. Trapeze artists and tightrope walkers and human cannonballs have made good money forever by challenging fate, by putting themselves in peril, Man versus the Grim Reaper, but he has brought the battle to modern dimensions, motorized it, wrapped it in a 1971 weird modern mix of sport and gasoline, showbiz and derring-do.

He drives his motorcycle at a high speed off a ramp, over assorted objects, mostly lines of cars, but also buses or trucks or the fountains at Caesars Palace, and he attempts to land on a ramp on the other side. The foundation of his success is failure. The more times he lands in an ambulance instead of on the specified ramp, the more times he is carted away for more reconstructive surgery, the more captivating his show becomes. There are no Harry Houdini tricks, no false bottoms or optical illusions. He makes the jump. Or doesn't. The times he doesn't make headlines.

Cavett: I know you're sick of being asked, "Why do you do it?" But why do you do it?

Knievel: That's a standard question everybody asks anyone, is why they do what they do. . .

Cavett: There are a lot of nice office jobs available . . .

Knievel: There are three mysteries to life: where we came from, why we do what we do, and where we're going to go. You don't know the answer to any of those questions, and I don't know the answer to any of them. So I never try to answer that. I do it because I'm Evel Knievel and there's something within me that makes me do it, and I don't try to figure it out, I just try to do it the best I can.

Cavett: Are you curious, would you ever like a psychiatrist to tell you why you . . .

Knievel: I've had a couple of them talk to me. They wound up talking to themselves.

Cavett: Do they come up with fancy theories, like you show your contempt for death by defying it and by tempting it and . . .

Knievel: They like to get me in a corner and look at me . . . I don't care what they want to talk about: the Vietnam situation, the financial situation in the United States of America, the . . . anything . . . the educational system. I talk to them about the stunt work and the life and death of it and how I feel about God, being religious or not, and they don't know what to think.

Cavett: They're more likely to say that you have some hidden loathing of yourself . . .

Knievel: A death wish maybe. I don't know. To me, life is a bore. Just doing nothing. I saw a guy working in that tunnel I came through here today. Why would a guy want to stand around in a tunnel for? Could you imagine wanting to work in a tunnel? He should get a motorcycle. Jump through the air. Breathe a little.

It is hard to say why Knievel has attracted America's attention. His notoriety is a curious fit into a curious time. He is a young Elvis dropped from a previous generation of pegged-pants, duck's-ass rebellion into the Age of Aquarius, more about trouble and excitement than peace and love. He even dresses like Elvis when he goes to work: white leather jumpsuits, red-white-and-blue stars and bars on the chest, flashy belt buckle with his initials on the front. He wears a cape. He carries a cane. Everything he does is counter to the counterculture. He is showing off, not dropping out, burning hydrocarbons instead of any kind of incense. There is not a mellow bone, broken or unbroken, in his body.

Maybe he fills a need. The Vietnam War is shit, has gone on forever. The politicians, led by Richard M. "Tricky Dick" Nixon in the White House, are shit. Authority of all kinds is shit. Society is shit. A dust of negativity has settled over everything familiar. Cynicism rules. Maybe there is a need for some muscle in the room, some noise, some unvarnished order. Move over, Maharishi. Get that sitar out of the way. Coming through. If the traditional heroes have disappeared, the soldiers and policemen and buttoned- down business leaders, then maybe a vacancy was opened on the pedestal. Maybe this self- invented hero with his self- invented name and his self- invented challenges has taken the spot. Someone was bound to get the job.

Can I Show You a Card Trick? | O3 Health And Fitness - Asheville ...

If you have been in our weight room, you may have seen the EASY button that floats around.? Some of us can?t resist pushing it, just to hear ?That was easy!? I want to make one that says ?10 burpees, please?, or ?give me 20 pushups?, or ?15 hindu squats and 15 bootstrappers, now?.? You could even take it home with you for a portable workout routine when you travel.?

That workout may be far-fetched, but there is one you can do with a deck of cards.? First, assign an exercise to each club suit.? Like this:

Clubs = pushups, regular or close-grip

Hearts = burpees, inchworms, or mountain climbers

Diamonds = plyo-lunges or jump squats

Spades = alternating V-ups, teasers, or box crunches

Now, shuffle the cards and turn the deck upside down near you.? Turn the first card face-up, and do as many of the suit?s exercises as it tells you to do. If you drew a 2-of-clubs card, you?d do 2 pushups;? a Queen of diamonds means you do 12 plyo-lunges.? You choose the ace number, either 1 or 14. If you pull a Joker card you have to double whatever is on the next card you draw.

Go through the entire deck, with as little rest as possible between each. Surprise! Do 14 burpees.? Whew! Only 2 pushups.?? It will take you about an hour to get through it, and you ADD?ers won?t be bored. That?s it? no equipment, just cards and a space to do the exercises.?

No excuses, either.? Take this trick to the beach this summer, or if you can?t make it to bootcamp for some vacation excuse, you?ll know your trainers have your backs.? And a few tricks up their sleeves.

A splendid if exhausting journey through the history of gospel music reaching back nearly two centuries

Don McGlynn?s?Rejoice and Shoutis probably the first documentary ever to look comprehensively at the 200-year musical history of African-American Christianity ? which is to say gospel music ? and may well be the last. It certainly doesn?t seem like McGlynn or his producer, Joe Lauro, who owns a vast collection of old records and music film footage, missed anything significant. The doc is exhaustive in its compilation of the major acts and personalities in gospel music ??to the point the narrative thread almost gets buried under the weight of names, dates, musical styles and vintage performances.

For anyone with a keen interest in this unique American musical form, Rejoice and Shout?is a must-see and see-again. It?s also a must-have for the home libraries of gospel-music enthusiast. For those whose interest is more casual, the film is almost as exhausting as exhaustive.

You?ve heard of documentaries that preach to the choir? Well, in this one, the choir preaches back!

McGlynn situates this history in the deep-rooted, hardcore religious beliefs of black American Christians and in the highly participatory Pentecostal church services. The historians and artists who accompany the viewer on this tour of musical history speak first of their abiding faith in the Almighty and the spiritual and communal joy of church-going. Then they talk about the music they grew up with.

Smokey Robinson?of Motown Records fame declares that what is called gospel music today began as ?plantation music? of the slavery era. Historian Bill Carpenter notes that in the 1800s slave owners brought their human chattel into the Christian church ? a ?civilizing? influence, they thought ? and the slaves in turn brought an African sense of music ?the drums and call-and-response ? to the songs that developed first in church and later out in the field to ease the back-breaking labor.

Other voices fill in the story ? Ira Tucker?of the Dixie Hummingbirds; Marie Knight, who seems to have known everyone in gospel music including Sister Rosetta Tharpe and?Mahalia Jackson; Mavis Staples?of the Staples Singers; Andrae?Crouch, who became a pastor himself; and another expert and author, Anthony Helibut.

The first to record the early hymns and spirituals were four-part-harmony quartets. But Helibut makes the interesting point that you can always tell the difference between a white barbershop quartet and a black one: In the black one, each voice has an individual sound.

The music evolved along with the times and musical styles. Mavis Staples herself came to the realization fairly late in her family?s career that while everyone was singing gospel, her dad was actually playing blues on his guitar. Then the civil rights movement caused Pops Staples to incorporate Freedom songs and even Bob Dylan into the family act.

While more secular elements such as blues, swing, soul and even rap and hip-hop have found their way into gospel but lyrics always stay on message ? the Lord is praised and the Gospel is preached to a community that has suffered much in its American experience.

Along with the key artists, the film?s commentators celebrate those transformative figures who wrote the music and mentored others such as Thomas A. Dorsey, a ?devil? within the community though since he penned ?filthy? lyrics for the nightclub as well as church songs, and Rev. James Cleveland, who helped train a young singer named Aretha Franklin in Detroit before becoming a Los Angeles-based choir leader who traveled the country to raise the level of excellence from town to town.

The 115-minute film contains an hour of vintage musical performances. That these exist at all is a miracle right up there with crossing the Jordan River into the Promised Land. Thus, Rejoice and Shout?is almost as much a concert film as a documentary.

But for a doc about the music business, this one contains almost no sense of celebrity. It?s not just, as Ira Tucker Jr. notes, that there was never any separation between the artist and the audience in a black church. The key thing is that these artists, whether performing in church or a concert hall, were and are church people. The goal is not a record contract ? although most of those mentioned here achieved that. The goal was to rejoice and shout the praises of God.

Frank Axelsen?s editing skillfully weaves the talking heads in and out of the vintage footage and ancient recordings going back over a century. The cinematography for the modern singing and interviews, however, is merely perfunctory.

Rogelia Baena on Ex-Wife's Child With Arnold Schwarzenegger: WTF!?

Lost amid the Arnold Schwarzenegger love child scandal is the fact that his wife, Maria Shriver, wasn't the only person who got cheated on.

Rogelia Baena, the ex-husband of Arnold's mistress Patty Baena, has just commented publicly on the scandal for the very first time, telling Entertainment Tonight that he thought the child his wife actually had with Schwarzenegger was his.

Until Maria outed them last week, that is!

Rogelia Baena is listed as the father on the boy's birth certificate, and was "very, very angry" when he found out about the child's true parentage from his sister.

"No believe," he replied in broken English when asked how he felt.

"But that is my son," he insisted, adding that, although he hasn't spoken to the boy since last year, he doesn't think the 13-year-old knows what's up yet.

"Nobody" knows where Mildred Patricia Baena is, either, he said.

Patty filed for divorce in 2008, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split and - in a bit of foreshadowing - noted that they had no children.

"Arnold Schwarzenegger is, for me... was my hero," Rogelia said of the man who fathered the child he thought was his since the '90s. "I feel betrayed."

"I was happy that day," Baena said, via an interpreter. He said if he could speak with the boy right now, he would say, "I am your father. That's all."

Unfortunately, a DNA test confirms he's not.

Plant, Miller lead Americana Awards nominations - Music | Centre ...

NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? Robert Plant and Buddy Miller teamed up to top the list of nominees for the 2011 Americana Awards with three apiece.

Each was nominated Monday for artist of the year along with fellow three-time nominee Elizabeth Cook and teamed up for several nominations on their collaboration "Band of Joy."

The album earned the former Led Zeppelin singer a nomination for album of the year. His all-star group of collaborators, which includes co-producer Miller and is also known as The Band of Joy, earned a nod in the duo/group category at the Oct. 13 awards.

Miller is also up for instrumentalist of the year.

Cook also received nominations for her album "Welder" and her "El Camino." Hayes Carll, the fourth artist of the year nominee, is up for two awards.

Sports provide a great backdrop for stories.? It seems that today almost everyone follows a sport team, whether it be football, baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer or others.? We all have our favorite teams and players.? But other sports can make great setting for short stories.? Sports short stories that center on horse racing and the race track are exciting and exhilarating.

A collection of stories by D.S. Williamson entitled ?and they?re off!:? Stories From The Racetrack?, centers on the lives of three different sets of characters with the racetrack as backdrop.? The format works well, giving the reader the opportunity to read a few different stories with a common theme.

The collection is about the struggles of life and overcoming adversity.? It deals with what we all have had to deal with in one way of another.? With great dialogue and well developed characters, each story delves into the mind of the reader.? The beauty of the short stories is that you can complete it in a very short period of time.? There are no chapters to keep up with or get lost in.? The stories hook you at the beginning, climax in the middle and conclude, sometimes with a shocking ending.

Sports short stories are popular in that they take the excitement of a sport and add a human element to it.? In any setting, there is life going on around it.? The game must still be played, the race must still go on.? Whatever trials and tribulations are being played out there is another force going on at the same time.

These short stories tie in man and beast and how the two may be different but are so much the same.? How animals can help us deal with our lives is amazing and interesting.? Horse racing is a sport of courage, perseverance and consistency.? It contains a lot of the elements that we deal with in every day life.

D.S. Williamson ties it all together in a fine collection of stories that are easy to read and interesting.? The stories take us on a journey and teach us that anything is possible, that nothing is that bad and even if it is, we have the strength and courage to deal with it.

Seven short stories that show how little control we really have over our own fate.? Readers embrace the stories and relate it to their own lives and struggles they may face.? Each story has its own meaning and ending, that is not always a happy ending, just as in life.
