Kathy Kaehler: Waist-er-cise - US Mag - The Breaking News | US ...

?Whittle your waist,? as they used to say. Unfortunately, spot-reducing doesn?t work. However, you can tone the muscles in your midsection with these powerhouse exercises. Do them every other day. These specific moves will increase the strength in your core as well as the upper body. The real necessities for making long-lasting changes to your body are a combination of good nutrition, cardio exercise and strength training. Developing a skinnier waistline accomplishes two things. First, it boosts your self-confidence. Being smaller in the middle changes how you stand, how you dress and how you sit. Have you ever seen someone who sits down on the sofa and immediately grabs a throw pillow and puts it in front of them? Secondly, it lowers your risk for chronic health complications like Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Good exercise to achieve this goal involves more than just the belly and waist, which is why you need to set your goals for total body weight loss.

No matter what you do physically you will never achieve a skinnier hourglass waistline if you continue to follow unhealthy eating habits. Your best bet is to cut back on your daily calorie intake and eat foods high in nutrients, like fruits, vegetables, lean meats, low-fat dairy products and whole grains. Paying attention to what goes in your mouth is just as important as the workout, if not even more. Additionally, abdominal exercises can help tone and tighten your waist as you get into better condition. Add in some classics like reverse crunches, hanging knee raises, crunches, planks and back extensions. These will help engage more muscles to help carve out that midsection. These muscles are the rectus abdominis, obliques and erector spinae. The rectus abdominis is in the middle of the stomach (the six-pack), obliques sit on the sides (the waistline), and the erector spinae is in the lower back.

Don?t forget the cardio. The best way to create a skinnier waist is by doing cardiovascular exercise. Cardio burns fat throughout your entire body, it doesn?t just pick the spot that has more fat. All forms of cardio are effective, provided you enjoy it and you do it. Swimming, walking, running, indoor cycling, kickboxing, elliptical training, rowing, dancing and jumping rope are all good options.

These are the ?sexy six? moves for the waistline. You can do them right at home with only a few pieces of equipment: a mat, 5lb. (or more) dumbbells and some type of ball ? a medicine ball would be great, however a soccer ball, basketball or small exercise ball will do.

To begin, try each exercise a few times just to get the feel of it. Then, go through each exercise doing the suggested reps and sets. Do the ?sexy six? every other day in addition to your cardio and other strength/conditioning moves. With consistency you will be looking for your belt, and when you put your hands on your waist, you will feel a difference.

Side Plank:

Lie on your left side on the floor with your legs stacked, lift your torso on the left elbow so that the left forearm is perpendicular to the torso. Stagger your feet so that the side of the right foot is on floor in front of the left foot for a wider base of support. Lift hips so that your body forms a straight line from head to toe. Belly button pulled in. Hold for 5 counts, then lower. Do 10 reps. Switch sides and repeat.

Side Plank With Knee Pull

Begin in a side plank position with your weight supported on your forearm and your legs straight with the ankles stacked on top of each other. Your body should form a straight line from your ear to your ankle, with belly button pulled in. Lift your top leg, bending your knee to bring your foot next to the inside of your straight knee. Hold. Slowly return your leg to the stacked position. Pull in 10 times and then switch sides. Do two full sets.

Elbow to Knee

Start in a push-up position on the floor, and fully extend your arms to lift your body off the floor. Belly button pulled in. Slowly pull your left knee forward to your chest/left elbow or wrist if you can, keeping your toes pointed. Continue alternating legs. Do 10 on each side.

Waist Pulls

Start with a 5lb. (or heavier) weight in one hand and your body standing straight up. While keeping your back straight, belly button pulled in, glutes squeezed and looking forward, tilt your body at the waist to the side as far as possible, hold for a second, and return to the starting position. Imagine you are between two plates of glass and can only bend sideways. Do 10 on each side for two sets each.

Seated Torso Twist

To begin, sit on the floor with your heels touching the floor and your knees bent. Make sure to keep your spine straight and then hold a medicine ball with your arms straight. Exhale while slowly twisting towards one side and touch the ball down to the floor and then repeat on the other side. Do 20 full sets of right to left.

Best Knee Plank

Start on your side with your elbow placed directly below your shoulder, forearm on floor, and your knees bent. Draw your abs tight and the body in a straight line. Lift your hips off the ground and hold your body keeping in that straight line for 10 seconds. Lower and repeat. Do 10 reps and switch sides. Keep your focus forward and stay strong through the core and forearm, do not sink into your shoulder.

Tribute To Pete Seeger : Betty & Baby Boomers & Tom Paxton ...

THE POWER OF SONG: A TRIBUTE TO THE MUSIC OF PETE SEEGER WITH BETTY AND THE BABY BOOMERS AND TOM PAXTON AT THE MAINSTAY JUNE 1 ? 3

?The Mainstay in Rock Hall, MD pays tribute to the music and activism of Pete Seeger with a concert with Betty and the Baby Boomers on Friday June 1 at 8:00 p.m. and a concert with legendary songwriter Tom Paxton on Saturday June 2 at 8:00 p.m. There will also be a discussion on Saturday afternoon June 1 led by Mainstay founder and director Tom McHugh and a sing-around on Sunday June 3 at the new pavilion in Rock Hall Village at the corner of Main Street and Route 20 in Rock Hall. Admission is $15 for Betty and the Baby Boomers and $20 for Tom Paxton. The discussion and the sing-around are free. The weekend is sponsored by Judy Kohl. For information and reservations call 410-639-9133. Information is also available at the Mainstay?s website http://www.mainstayrockhall.org.

On Friday June 1, Betty and the Baby Boomers return to the Mainstay from their home in the Hudson River Valley to help pay tribute to their long-time associate and collaborator Pete Seeger. The folk music magazine Sing-Out called them ?a refreshing reminder of the halcyon days of American folk music.? Betty Boomer, Steve Stanne, Jean Valla McAvoy and Paul Rubeo met as singers on the sloop Clearwater in 1985. Bassist Robert Bard joined the group in 2009. The Clearwater organization was founded by Pete Seeger. It built the 106 foot Hudson River sloop Clearwater and is dedicated to environmental causes.

With a sound inspired by the enthusiastic harmonies of folk groups like Peter, Paul & Mary and the Weavers, the Boomers draw material from traditional folk music, from contemporary songwriters and classic folk writers like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Phil Ochs. Their distinctive arrangements feature rich three and four part harmonies, strong instrumentals and occasional a capella voices. David Malachowski in the Kingston (NY) Daily Freeman said they ?sing and play old-school folk like it was brand spanking new.? Admission to Betty and the Baby Boomers is $15.

Betty Boomer is a former English teacher turned naturalist, working on the Hudson and in the Valley?s other precious open spaces. Jean Valla McAvoy is the education coordinator for the Hudson River Research Reserve, protecting wetlands along the river. Paul Rubeo, a longtime social studies teacher, today trains teachers to use computer and video technology to bring the river into their classrooms. Steve Stanne directed Clearwater?s teaching programs for nearly twenty years and now coordinates the education projects of New York State?s Hudson River Estuary Program.

On Saturday afternoon June 2 at 1:00 p.m., there will be an informal discussion about Pete Seeger?s music and activism with Tom McHugh and some of Pete?s colleagues and associates. Steve Stanne is a founding member of Betty & the Baby Boomers who directed Clearwater?s teaching programs for nearly twenty years and now coordinates the education projects of New York State?s Hudson River Estuary Program. Judy Kohl was a Hudson River Valley resident for 40 years, a Clearwater member, co-founder of Hedgelawn Foundation and sponsor of this weekend tribute to Pete Seeger. John Mylod is a former Director of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater and a Hudson River shad fisherman. Tom McHugh, is a former VP of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater and is founder and director of The Mainstay. The discussion will take place at the Mainstay and admission is free.

Saturday June 3 at 8:00 p.m., Tom Paxton, one of America?s great folk songwriters returns to the Mainstay stage to continue the tribute to Seeger. Included in Paxton?s body of work are such timeless standards as ?The Last Thing On My Mind?, ?Ramblin? Boy?, ?Bottle Of Wine?, ?Whose Garden Was This??, ?Goin? To The Zoo? and ?The Marvelous Toy?.

Tom Paxton has been writing witty and incisive topical songs since the 60s. His songs are at once timeless and contemporary. He has become a voice of multiple generations, addressing issues of injustice and inhumanity, laying bare the absurdities of modern culture, and celebrating the most tender bonds of family, friends, and community.

In describing Tom Paxton?s influence on his fellow musicians, Pete Seeger has said: ?Tom?s songs have a way of sneaking up on you. You find yourself humming them, whistling them, and singing a verse to a friend. Like the songs of Woody Guthrie, they?re becoming part of America.?

Paxton received a 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy during the 51st Annual Grammy Awards. He was nominated for a Grammy for ?Comedians and Angels? in 2007, and ?Live in the U.K.? in 2006. He was also nominated for Grammys in 2003 for his Appleseed Records CD, ?Looking For The Moon?, and in 2002 for his children?s CD, ?Your Shoes, My Shoes?. He has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from ASCAP, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the BBC in London. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music from Washington College in 2009.

His place in folk music is secured not just by hit records and awards, but by the admiration of three generations of fellow musicians. An internationally recognized and loved cultural figure, he has always chosen goodwill over commercial success. He not only wrote but also lives the words, ?Peace will come, and let it begin with me.?

Judy Collins, another legend whose body of work goes back to the 60s, said ?Tom Paxton?s songs are so powerful and lyrical, written from the heart and the conscience, and they reach their mark, our most inner being. He writes stirring songs of social protest and gentle songs of love, each woven together with his personal gift for language. His melodies haunt, his lyrics reverberate. I have sung Tom?s songs for three decades and will go on doing so in the new century, for they are beautiful and timeless, and meant for every age.?

Upon graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 1959 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Paxton acted in summer stock theatre and briefly tried graduate school before joining the Army. Brought to the New York vicinity courtesy of the Army, Paxton remained there following his discharge. His early success in Greenwich Village coffeehouses, such as The Gaslight and The Bitter End, led to an ever-increasing circle of work. Pete Seeger started singing his songs including ?Ramblin? Boy? in the early 60s.

In his book ?Mayor of MacDougal Street? Dave Van Ronk said, ?Dylan is usually cited as the founder of the new song movement, and he certainly became its most visible standard-bearer, but the person who started the whole thing was Tom Paxton ? he tested his songs in the crucible of live performance, he found that his own stuff was getting more attention than when he was singing traditional songs or stuff by other people? he set himself a training regimen of deliberately writing one song every day. Dylan had not yet showed up when this was happening, and by the time Bobby came on the set, with at most two or three songs he had written, Tom was already singing at least 50 percent his own material.?

Over the years, Paxton?s songs have been recorded by Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, the Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul & Mary, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Simon & Garfunkel, Harry Belefonte, Neil Diamond, Glen Campbell, John Denver and Placido Domingo among hundreds of others.

Admission to the Tom Paxton concert is $20 and reservations are a must.

On Sunday June 3 at 1:00 p.m., the Mainstay concludes its tribute to the music of Pete Seeger with a sing-around at the new pavilion at the corner of Rte. 20 and Main Street in Rock Hall. Everyone is invited to bring their voice, guitar or other instrument. Attendees can bring a Pete Seeger song to share with the group or just join in on the choruses of Seeger songs like ?Where Have all the Flowers Gone,? ?If I Had a Hammer? ?Turn, Turn Turn? and ?We Shall Overcome? and songs associated with Seeger like ?This Land is Your Land, ?Michael Row the Boat Ashore? and ?Goodnight Irene.? Admission is free. In the event of severe weather, the sing-around will move indoors to the Mainstay.

The Mainstay (Home of Musical Magic) is the friendly informal storefront performing arts center on Rock Hall?s old time Main Street. It is a 501(c)(3), non profit dedicated to the arts, serving Rock Hall, MD and the surrounding region. It is committed to presenting local, regional and national level talent, at a reasonable price, in an almost perfect acoustic setting. Wine, beer, sodas and snacks are available at the bar.

Employ Self Improvement Tips to Help Yourself Get Better at Business

From time to time, we all deal with things with a lack of confidence. Sometimes we feel incompetent about the things that we do both personally and professionally. Our confidence may seem to wane and diminish. We can feel a lot of stress in our life, but it is even worse when it comes to the business world. Your profit margin can diminish greatly and your self-esteem can falter, which can ruin your ability to profit in business.

In the following paragraphs, you will learn some useful tips on how to improve yourself and make your business more profitable.

Delegation is a skill you must learn. If you attempt to do everything yourself, you?ll find yourself completely stressed out. Clearly, you want tasks completed as you think is right. You really aren?t the only person who can handle the job, and you need to remember that. You can achieve two things through delegation. It?s a clear indication to you and others that you believe in the people you work with and in your team enough to ask for their help with your projects. This elevates you in their self-esteem (especially if you let them know how much you appreciate them taking on the work you give them). It also frees up your time, allowing you to focus on more important tasks. Your self-esteem will be sky high because you will be able to achieve more of your objectives like this. All of these things will play a positive role in your business and professional life. You need to be able to prioritize. So many people have a hard time prioritizing the things they need to do. After all, everything seems important, doesn?t it? The truth is that some things are just more important than others. If you write out the things that you want to get done (on a daily, monthly or even yearly basis) you should try to prioritize them. Do the most important things first. This will help you feel good about yourself and keep you working through to the things that don?t matter quite as much. If you fail to prioritize the things that have to get done every day, you risk running out of time for important things because you?ll have spent time focusing on the things that aren?t as important.

Don?t get behind on the little jobs like shredding and paper filing. Those are important to keep up with. You want to keep track of all of these things. If you don?t, you may have one piece of paper out of place and it will ruin your entire day. These are typically projects that only take a few minutes of your day ? unless you let them pile up and then they can eat up a whole afternoon. It will help you feel organized when all of the little things are done. It will help you stay on task and feel comfortable doing so. These were merely a couple of suggestions in terms of how beneficial self-improvement techniques can be to a business. Simply try them out and find out how much more profitable your company can become and how good you feel.

Liriano's return to Twins' rotation a big hit

By DAVE CAMPBELL

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:40 p.m. ET May 30, 2012

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The Oakland Athletics were swinging and missing, and Francisco Liriano kept on firing those fastballs, sliders and changeups in the strike zone that has eluded him so often this year and last.

For one afternoon, the Minnesota Twins enjoyed that All-Star-like pitching performance they've been longing for.

Liriano's return to the rotation was a rousing success, with six shutout innings by the vexing left-hander Wednesday to lead the Twins to a 4-0 victory over the Athletics, their eighth straight loss.

"I told myself before the game, the season starts for me today. So everything that happened previously, I had to put it behind me and move forward," said Liriano (1-5), who retired the last 11 batters he faced in a game that lasted only 2 hours, 16 minutes.

He struck out nine, the most this season by any Twins pitcher. He allowed only two walks with a double and two singles against the worst-hitting team in the majors, batting a brutal .210.

"The big thing for me: He kept his composure," catcher Drew Butera said, adding: "He has an electric fastball, and obviously you know about that slider. When he's got his stuff, when he's throwing strikes, he's a true ace."

Josh Willingham had an RBI single and a two-run homer, roughly 15 hours after his three-run shot in the ninth gave the Twins a dramatic win the night before. This was their first sweep of both a home series and a three-game set this season.

Tyson Ross (2-6) lasted only five innings for the A's, who are batting .172 during the eight-game skid. Ten times in that stretch, they've scored two runs or fewer. A's manager Bob Melvin said he's as frustrated as ever.

"Before this stretch that we're on right now, we've been a team that's been really scrappy and that's how we were finding our identity with that, that's who we believed we were," Melvin said. "These losing streaks can take on a life of their own, and they're not going to just end because they're going to end. We have to take ownership in it."

That's what the Twins needed Liriano to do for the sake of his careening career, which despite a stellar rookie year in 2006 and a solid season in 2010 has been mostly marked by injury and inconsistency.

"We need him in the rotation. I think the story's been told too many times about how good his stuff is. He's got to go out on the field and get it done, and today was a good start. We'll work from there," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said.

Liriano's first six starts were so bad he was put in the bullpen to fix his mind and his mechanics, and his last relief appearance Friday was rough, too - five hits, four runs and two walks in 2 2-3 innings.

The Twins had little choice but to put him back as a starter. Triple-A call-ups Scott Diamond and P.J. Walters have helped stabilize the situation, but the rotation has by far the highest collective ERA in the majors.

"Even when I was struggling, I didn't lose my confidence at all. I knew that I was making a lot of mistakes," Liriano said.

Against the A's Liriano offered some hope - or, perhaps more relevantly, summer trade value. Pitching coach Rick Anderson paid him a visit on the mound after he threw three straight balls to Jonny Gomes in the third inning, but Liriano got back to business and struck the designated hitter out.

"It baffles me how the heck that guy's been struggling," Gomes said.

Ross has lost six of his last seven starts with a 7.34 ERA over that span, and he has the highest opponent batting average in baseball for a minimum of 40 innings at .337.

The right-hander was in trouble right away with a leadoff double by Denard Span. Joe Mauer walked, and Willingham followed with a sharp single. Brian Dozier drove in another run with a single of his own.

After Mauer walked for the third time, in the fifth inning, Willingham hit a no-doubter to the back of the second deck above left field for his 10th home run this year.

The Twins finished 12-16 in May, but that's better than 6-16 in April.

"It's a good feeling, a really good feeling. I hope we get to experience it more," Willingham said.

NOTES: Melvin said OF Yoenis Cespedes will likely join the team Friday in Kansas City. LF Collin Cowgill, however, would be a "difficult send-down," he said. Cowgill has reached base in 11 of his last 17 plate appearances. ... Willingham has hit seven of his 10 home runs at Target Field this year. ... Both teams are off Thursday. Right-hander Carl Pavano (2-4, 5.46 ERA) pitches for the Twins on Friday in Cleveland against Indians righty Derek Lowe (6-3, 3.25) to start a three-game series. The A's send RH Bartolo Colon (4-5, 4.52) to the mound Friday against RH Felipe Paulino (2-1, 2.03) of the Royals.

Slowcooker Cuban Pork Tacos with Jicama Slaw

cubanpork1

How does a food blogger and self-proclaimed food lover go 10+ days without her every last pot, pan, spice, spoon, spatula, blender, cutting board, baking sheet, measuring cup, dish, bowl, condiment, or staple pantry item? Just to name a few. I even wince at the thought of not having my waffle iron around. I?m going to be in between jobs and 5-star breakfasts during this transition only seem appropriate.

My blood pressure rises just thinking about the travesty that is moving?and quickly approaching. Breathe.

cubanpork2

Our friend, Liz, offered up her sympathy after having been kitchen-less while moving, too. She had the wise suggestion to bring along my crock pot?and some knives. There?s a lot of simple meals that can be made in the crock pot with very few ingredients and I am going to heed her advice.

I think I?m going to beg, plead, and insist that I can take one large Tupperware storage container for ?kitchen necessities? + a cooler to take some condiments (I don?t want to waste!). I?m sure it will take some being creative, but I?m up for the challenge. I think.

cubanpork3

This slow cooker recipe was one that immediately caught my eye. Was it all the spices? Was it the jicama slaw? Was it the fact that it cooks for 8-9 hours making it perfect for a weekday meal?

All of the above, I do believe.

We don?t eat a ton of pork, mainly because it?s not our preferred meat. That said, slow cooked pork is absolutely perfect in dishes like tacos. The pork roast is leaner than the commonly used pork shoulder making this meal all the leaner, without sacrificing flavor. Don?t skip the jicama in this recipe. Between its subtle sweetness and intense crispiness, it?s one that perfectly finishes these tacos.

1/2 medium or large jicama, peeled and sliced into sticks
1 small bell pepper (any color), sliced into strips
2 carrots, peeled and sliced into strips or ribbons
2 Tbsp. lime juice (about 1 lime)
2 tsp canola oil
Salt and pepper, to taste
cilantro, chopped, to taste

Directions:

Rub the pork roast all over with the Dijon and 1 tablespoon oil. Season with salt and pepper. Combine the cayenne, allspice, chili powder, paprika, cinnamon, and oregano in a small bowl. Then, rub the mixture all over the pork. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate overnight.

Heat a large, heavy-bottomed skillet over medium high heat and add 1 tablespoon oil. Place the roast in the skillet and brown on all sides. Remove to slowcooker.

Place the onions and garlic on top of the pork. Combine the honey, orange juice and zest, lime juice, and chicken broth, and then pour into the slowcooker. Cover and cook on low for 8-9 hours. Shred with a fork. If there seems to be a bit too much liquid, remove the lid from the crockpot and turn to high and continue cooking until juices thicken.

To make the slaw, toss together all ingredients in a medium bowl. Serve slaw over tacos.

Yield: 8 servings (2 tacos each with ~2.5 ounces of meat and jicama slaw).

Nutrition Information (per serving): 447 calories; 13.6 g. fat; 72 mg. cholesterol; 626 mg. sodium; 49.5 g. carbohydrate; 6.6 g. fiber; 29.3 g. protein

Result: Flavorful, fall-apart tender pork with the beautiful jicama slaw. You don?t want to skimp on the jicama slaw! The crunch of the veggies is perfect over the meat. Mr. Prevention LOVED these, and I did, too. The rub on the meat with the flavorful cooking liquid makes these tacos very unique and not short on taste. Enjoy!

Off to my dialysis unit?3 short weeks of work left. Crazy, crazy.

Apple CEO on friending Facebook, educating Siri and killing Ping

5 hrs.

Apple CEO Tim Cook sat down for an in-depth?interview during the? All?Things?Digital conference in?Rancho Palos Verdes, California on Tuesday.?Cook discussed where Apple's been and ??more importantly ??where it's going. He also slipped in some hints about the future of Siri, the doom of Ping, and a potential relationship between Apple and Facebook.

Cook started his conversation with his hosts, Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg, by declaring that he has never been as amazed by "all the things [he] cannot talk about" right now. "The juices are flowing and we have some incredible things coming out," he explained.

While Cook touched on a range of topics, including Apple's manufacturing plans, during the interview, my ears twitched when he mentioned good ol' Ping.?

Ping ??iTunes Ping, to use its proper name ??is a social network of sorts that's baked into Apple's desktop?media player software. The feature was not received particularly well by most users, who criticized its limited availability, the?prevalence?of fake celebrity accounts, the removal of Facebook integration, and initial waves of spam.?

When asked about what happened to Ping, Cook explained that it seems as if the average customer is saying that it "isn?t something that [he or she wants] to put a lot of energy into."

"Will we kill it? I don't know. We'll look at that," he remarked before host Swisher quipped that Apple could "totally sell [Ping] to Google+."

While it sounds as if Ping is doomed, there is potentially brighter news when it comes to other social network integration. Cook remarked that "Facebook is a great company" and that he has "great appreciation for them."

?We have great respect for them," he emphasized, again."?I think we can do more with them. Just stay tuned on this one.???

Sounds like Facebook and Apple might be changing their relationship status settings at some point in the near future. Hopefully the social network won't get jealous of all the attention Apple is giving Siri, the personal assistant built into the latest generation iPhone, though. Because Siri is definitely here to stay for a while.

?Customers love it. It?s one of the most popular features of iPhone 4S," Cook told Swisher and Mossberg. "But there?s more that it can do, and we have a lot of people working on this. And I think you will be really pleased with some of the things you?ll see over the coming months on this. We have some cool ideas about what Siri can do. We have a lot going on on this.?

You can catch up on other details from Cook's interview on the All Things Digital website, where Ina Fried?has ?compiled?plenty of notes, quotes and pictures.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

In a thesis submitted at the University of the Basque Country, Iaki Olaizola is calling for legislation on a dignified death

"What people are afraid of is dying badly rather than actually dying". Iaki Olaizola has observed how Basque society feels about euthanasia and the process of dying, and how the perception has changed since the 1970s. For this purpose, he interviewed all kinds of people and has been able to conclude that the fear of dying badly is widespread. In his thesis, defended at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), he stressed the need to guarantee a dignified death by means of legislation: "We in the Basque Country, and in the West as a whole, basically live well, but we die badly. And this is something that can be improved". His work his entitled Transformaciones en el proceso de morir: la eutanasia, una cuestin de debate en la sociedad vasca (Transformations in the process of dying: euthanasia, a matter for debate in Basque society).

As it was a piece of anthropological research, the in-depth interview was the most significant technique in this work. Specifically, Olaizola interviewed fifteen Basques: "The sample is made up of more women than men. The fact is, as people live longer the need for care has also increased, and women have always shouldered greater responsibility in this task." He chose ordinary people, in other words, he did not set out to interview people with specific knowledge about euthanasia or about the processes of dying. "It is everyone's concern; the process of dying is not something exclusive to specialists, let alone doctors. Once certain decisions have been taken, the doctor is essential, but as far as the reflection, the debate, the value of the life, the point of it, etc. is concerned, it is not the responsibility of the doctors, but of everyone," he explains.

From the traditional to the biographical

Olaizola has studied the process of dying by dividing it into three phases: disease and dependency, dying, and the ritual that takes place following death. As he explains, the three phases have undergone profound changes over the last few decades. Basque society has evolved from the traditional model to the "biographical" one. As the author points out, "in the traditional one religion exerts a tremendous influence, we have to go on living for as long as God wants. Death is understood as a long process, like a part of life. We do not have control over our lives. But then appear people who start to reflect more deeply and who are aware of their own lives. New ethics, models and practices emerge I call that the biographical model." In other words, to take control of our life and death.

As this piece of research concludes, the turning point between the two models takes place in the 1960s and 1970s. This is due to various changes. As regards social changes, Olaizola points to demographic evolution and the increase in life expectancy: "Now it is expected that we will be dependent for five or six years before we die. Dependency signifies a need for extreme care which usually results in a terrible burden for women. What is more, the family setup has changed; in the past, up to three generations used to live under the same roof."

In any case, Olaizola says that cultural changes have exerted the greatest influence on the evolution in the way we perceive death. He refers to "reflexive individualisation" as a clear example of this change. In other words, our health is our own affair, so there is no reason why it should be other people's responsibility: "The right not to care emerges. It asserts that people, above all women, are not obliged to look after patients to such extremes, that they are people and that they have to live." Legislation is also ushering in that cultural change, as in the case of the Spanish Law on Patient Autonomy (2002): "Each person is the owner and master of his or her own process, the medical system is not authorised to look after you if you do not want it to. The cultural change is huge: our autonomy has turned into the fundamental principle. And another important change as far as the legislation is concerned is the possibility of drawing up a declaration of advance directives, in which you can specify, for example, your wish not to go on living beyond a specific point."

No to suffering

Nevertheless, Olaizola concludes that there remains much to do in legislation; in the process of dying as well as in the burden shouldered by the carers. In connection with this last point, he highlights what was said by the women interviewed for the research: "They in particular do not want their relatives to look after them during their years of dependence. They suffered so much when it was their turn to be the carers that they do not want a similar burden placed on their daughters. They would rather go into a nursing home."

Apart from the exceptions mentioned already, the author of this thesis has complained that there is a great lack of specification as far as the legislation is concerned. He says that "a huge step" has to be taken: "Nowadays no one attaches redemptive value to suffering. All the people I interviewed said that pain is unnecessary and that it has to be eliminated. Legislation has to be passed on that right to a dignified death, there must be guarantees. The quality of death needs to be improved because it is still bad."

Insert Coin: Twig, the tiny iPhone cable that's also a tripod (video)

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

Image

Imagine an iPhone cable that was only four-inches long, doubled as a tripod and could bend to your every whim? That's the idea behind Twig, designed by former WIMM engineer Jason Hilbourne, who wanted something sturdier, smaller and more portable than Cupertino's "limp noodle." In partnership with an iOS accessory maker, the cable's three sturdy prongs will transform into a dock, wrap around objects or create a free-standing tripod for your FaceTime needs. It needs $50,000 to turn from dismembered action-figure prototype to reality, with an $18 pledge enough to secure you one of the first to leave the factory. After the break we've got the pitch footage, which includes what happens when you start prototyping with your Speed Racer dolls.

Car finance provider carfinance247.co.uk slams 'ambiguous' reporting

Car buyers looking for finance are being urged not to be misled by a newspaper article and other media where personal loan interest rates are cited from just 6%.

?This is ambiguous? says director of car finance and dealer specialists carfinance247.co.uk, Louis Rix, referring to a recent article* that claims forecourt finance is more expensive than other deals.

?While, as in just about every industry, you may find there are some car dealers charging you over the odds for borrowing, there are companies who do offer fair and transparent interest rates.

?Not only that, but this particular article says that car buyers are turning to forecourt finance despite cheaper deals being available elsewhere and citing alternative loan interest rates of 6% ?if you have a good credit history?. What they do not say, however, is that you?ll need to meet often very strict criteria. This may include you having an excellent credit record (as opposed to just ?good?) and, with some lenders, being aged 30 or over (or being a homeowner)**.

?The nature of the economy at the moment means that a good proportion of consumers may not meet the criteria for these personal loans. And should they apply for finance and subsequently get refused, apart from being disappointed, the application will show up on their credit file. This could further negate them getting accepted for borrowing elsewhere, as a rejected application ? or several ? smacks of financial desperation, which other lenders may be keen to avoid?.

Mr. Rix adds that comparing all the car finance options available before applying for a loan naturally makes sense but that ?so-called forecourt finance, and finance arranged by specialists, should not be discounted. The interest rates often headlined by loan companies are indicative only and not every applicant is guaranteed to be offered that rate?.

He explains that using a car finance service such as carfinance247, which accesses more than just one lender, means an applicant?s financial circumstances are matched to the most appropriate lender.

?This means that car buyers get the finance they need - and at a realistic price.?

Mr. Rix says that ?being realistic and honest? is part of his company?s ethos. He adds that is why their online loan calculator gives three different approximate rates for weekly loan costs for people looking for finance, based on their credit history. ?This gives them a better picture of affordability?.

Orion clean room subs filters, fans for ceiling

ScienceDaily (May 28, 2012) ? Turns out a clean room doesn't necessarily need a roof, NASA is finding out as it tries out a design that could be assembled around the Orion spacecraft as it is prepared for launch in the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The key to the concept, developed by Astrotech, is two 10-foot-high walls of filter-equipped fans positioned 30 feet apart to push and pull the air in one direction across the capsule, keeping particles from settling on the spacecraft's surface.

A set of clear walls completes the box, but there is no ceiling. That's important because engineers want to use the large cranes already in the VAB to lift the Orion spacecraft and its shell into place as it is assembled on top of the Space Launch System rocket. If they have to build a clean room with its own crane, the cost would be much higher.

"The guys over in the Operations and Checkout Building are using this and that's what gave us the idea," said Doug Lenhardt, an engineer with NASA's Ground Systems Development and Operations Program. "It's pretty innovative, so we'll see if it works."

The test, which involves a room built around a full-scale Orion model, has been running for two weeks on the floor of High Bay 3 in the VAB and will continue another two to three weeks.

"The results have been encouraging," Lenhardt said. "We don't have the full story yet, but it's been encouraging.

The demands of a clean room in the VAB are not nearly as strict as those in the Operations and Checkout Building hangar where the Orion capsule will be built. In fact, the technicians in the O&C are already working with a similar setup to build the capsule components into a working spacecraft. Because even a slight contaminant can create problems inside a capsule, the O&C's entire high bay is kept to high cleanliness standards with the area around Orion given an extra layer of protection.

In the VAB, the requirement is to keep visible contaminants, such as specks of dirt and dust, off the outside of the capsule.

It may not sound like a big deal for something that will be exposed to space, but an earthly bit of pollen or sand or even a human hair can confuse a star tracker, lead to a build up around an exhaust port or block a thruster, for example.

And there are lots of particles looking for a place to settle in the VAB, especially when the doors are open and wind is swirling around.

"Conditions in the VAB are bad. It is much worse than being outside," said Walt Turner, senior integration engineer with Sierra Lobo. "It's like we have a dust creator."

The amount of particles in the VAB surprised John Weeks, an operations engineer overseeing the clean room evaluation.
