I am 25 and at my job I?m not offered any kind of 401k plan. Is it a good idea to invest into mutual funds to build my retirement plan? As they say, start early. What are my options on this?
I was refered by a friend to talk to a financial advisor, she is working p/t under primerica with three different investing companies. According to all the numbers I provided, she advises me to use Franklin Templeton Fund Allocation, I don?t know much about any avaialble investing companies so I am very lost in terminology and the numbers.

Give it a try to help choose the right shade for your lamp even before you order. Follow this simple procedure to help make the right choice the first time.

First, we need to understand how lampshades are measured. You will need three measurements, bottom diameter, top diameter and height. The height of a shade should be measured straight up and down vertically?not along the slant.

Measuring Tip #1: The reason we measure height up and down, ?vertically? is that the height measurement of your lamp from bulb socket base to top of harp is probably the minimum vertical height you will want to cover with your shade.

Measuring Tip #2: The height of your lamp can be adjusted with a shorter or taller harp to be able to use a standard shade rather than ordering a custom lampshade in many cases.

Now, here is the trick to ordering the right shade. You probably have an idea of the approximate size, so simply consult a list of rawhide lamp shades and select the one you are considering. Each shade?s measurements should be listed as described above.

Next, make a simple two-dimensional ?flat? pattern the size of the shade out of paper or cardboard. For example, use the lower edge of the cardboard for the base line. Measure up the height of the shade and draw a horizontal line parallel to the base line which will represent the top edge of the shade. Now draw a vertical line straight up and down from the base line to the top edge line. If you imagine the base line, vertical line and top edge line as the capital letter ?I? you are on the right track.

The next step is to mark the top and bottom dimensions of the shade on your pattern so that you get the correct slant for the edge of the shade. From the center line measure and mark the top diameter of the shade. If the top diameter is 5? then measure to the left and right of the center line along the top edge line 2.5? on both sides and make a mark. Those points are the top corners of your pattern. Repeat along the baseline using the shade?s bottom diameter. If it seems confusing, it?s really not, but very simple and quick. See our full color shade measuring graphic for a visual aid.

Finally, cut out the pattern and have someone hold it in place over the lamp, while you step back and look. Even though it is flat, you will be able to get a feel for how the shade will look on your lamp and order with confidence. It?s not full proof but it is a quick and easy way to make sure that you are on the right track in your shade size selection. Witness to confront Amanda Knox in Italy murder appeal (AFP)

PERUGIA, Italy (AFP) ? A man convicted of killing a British student in Italy takes the stand for the first time on Monday against Amanda Knox, the US woman appealing a sentence for her part in the same murder.

Rudy Guede was tried separately from Knox and her Italian lover Raffaele Sollecito after he agreed to a fast-track trial procedure and his sentence was reduced to 16 years in prison after he expressed remorse over what happened.

He has admitted to sexually assaulting Kercher in her home on the night of November 1 and to being in the house when she was killed but not to the gruesome murder, which has shaken the medieval university town of Perugia.

"I'm concerned since there have been mistakes in this process all along but I'm confident," Knox's lawyer, Carlo Dalla Vedova, told AFP as the hearing got underway, with a series of witnesses for the prosecution set to testify.

Knox's mother, Edda Mellas, a schoolteacher from Seattle in the US state of Washington, also attended the hearing together with her husband Chris Mellas and said that her daughter has been "anxious" ahead of Monday's hearing.

"It's horrible for her to go through this but I think she's glad things are moving along. She feels things are going well," she said.

Commenting on a crucial review by independent experts of the DNA evidence used to convict Knox in the case, which is due to be presented to the court by Thursday, Mellas said: "There's no evidence of her in the room.

"It sounds like the independent experts are professionals and if that's the case, it's all going to come back positive for her," she added.

The killing of Kercher, an exchange student from Leeds University, was the subject of a controversial US television film earlier this year starring US actress Hayden Panettiere as Knox and has drawn international media attention.

Kercher's family have spoken of their trauma as the case is once again dragged into the spotlight and have said they are confident of the convictions.

Knox and Sollecito were sentenced to 26 and 25 years in prison in 2009.

Prosecutors said they killed Kercher when a drug-fuelled sex game in a stone cottage that Knox and Kercher shared turned violent. She was found semi-nude in a pool of blood under a duvet with multiple stab wounds to the neck.

Guede, a local drifter originally from Ivory Coast who fled after the murder and was arrested in Germany, was convicted in 2008 and originally sentenced to 30 years in jail, but the sentence was later reduced on appeal.

Knox and Sollecito were convicted in large part because of traces of Knox's DNA found on the knife believed to have killed Kercher and Sollecito's DNA on a bra clasp. For the appeal, fresh DNA tests were ordered on both items.

At a hearing this month, a convicted child killer and a mobster told the court that Knox and Sollecito had nothing to do with the 21-year-old's death.

Mario Alessi, convicted of killing a child, said that in fact a friend of Guede had killed the Briton to silence her after she resisted a sexual assault.

The convict said Guede had spoken to him about the case during an exercise session at Viterbo prison where they shared a cell.

Camorra boss Luciano Aviello, meanwhile, accused his own brother, telling the court his sibling killed Kercher in an attempt to steal a painting.

Assembling a Family Tree

When you first start researching your genealogy and you see a well-done family tree with easy instructions, you may want to immediately start one, but that is not your first concern. You need to find all your ancestors and their vital records.

This is going to take from a few months to several years depending on your family and the methods you use to confirm the existence of the members. First you find your grandparents and all the vital records and certificates for them and store them using archival methods.

Find all the birth, death and marriage certificates. Find photos and any memorabilia concerning a family member. Use a method you prefer for keeping all these things organized.

Some people use color coded notebooks and tabs. Genealogists are usually buried under piles of notes and documents. Be sure you put the source of all your information on the documents.

If it is a census, put the number, year, place and address. If it is a certificate, put down where you obtained it whether at a church or courthouse.

Be sure to keep track of what is rumor and what is accurate. Census records are excellent. Birth and marriage certificates are usually accurate.

Now, you are ready to make a family tree. There are several ways to make your tree. If you are an artist with beautiful handwriting or the ability to write in calligraphy, you may draw a tree with the leaves being the family members.

I do not have an artistic bone in my body, so I chose Family Tree Maker software to document and organize my family and the records. You can then make trees and books.

Computer software really helps keep people organized and it will find errors and let you know if that mother was too old to have that son or other obvious mistakes.

I think it helps if you draw a diagram in pen or pencil on a sheet of firm paper or cardboard, putting the oldest ancestor at the top and then flare out the rest of the family under him.

You can add spouses and children all on this one diagram. Make one of these for each branch of the tree before you really start making a final product.

Whatever you do, do not go online and put in a surname and think that the results you receive are your family. They might well be if some of your relatives have already submitted a tree online. However, use caution when adding these names to your tree until you verify them.

A well assembled, well documented family tree is a wonderful keepsake for the members of your family.

Legal observers expect MLB to contest McCourt's request for filing bankruptcy, arguing the dispute should remain within the confines of baseball. Baseball's constitution allows Selig to take control of a team that seeks Chapter 11 protection.

"For somebody who grew up as a Dodger fan since he was 6 in Brooklyn, this makes me very, very sad," said Bob Daley, the Dodgers' managing partner when Rupert Murdoch's Fox Entertainment Group Inc. sold the team to McCourt in 2004.

The real estate developer bought the team in a highly leveraged $430 million deal that was the second-highest for a baseball team at the time.

He became just the fourth owner in franchise history, and the sale marked the return of the team to family ownership, although the McCourt clan has been nothing like the O'Malleys.

The O'Malleys owned the Dodgers or a stake in them for more than 50 years, an old-fashioned tenure of stability and tradition. Any problems were kept in-house, and employees were treated like family.

The O'Malley family's business was baseball. The McCourt family's business has become everybody's business.

Two years ago, McCourt and his wife and former team CEO Jamie McCourt decided to divorce, prompting a tawdry fight over who owns the team.

Their court filings revealed a lifestyle of excess, extreme even by the standards of LA's super-rich: multiple lavish homes, private security, country club memberships, even a six-figure hair stylist on call for the couple.

Daley rues the day the team was sold to McCourt.

"Fox, myself, and MLB made a horrible mistake in not doing the proper due diligence on Frank McCourt," he said. "I helped get him approved and for my piece, I feel very bad about it."

"To date, LAD has remained current in its obligations," Ingram wrote. "However, LAD is now on the verge of running out of cash, the results of a perfect storm of events."

McCourt has taken out loans to stay afloat this season but his mounting financial problems were expected to balloon this week, when he owed tens of millions of dollars to meet payroll and other obligations.

About $20 million is slated for current and deferred compensation by Thursday, while more than $18 million is required as a reserve to prefund money to be paid to players in 2012 under terms of the collective bargaining agreement, court documents show.

The bankruptcy filing lists assets of up to $1 billion and debts up to $500 million. The Dodgers are obligated to pay $92.5 million in guaranteed player contracts, not including signing bonuses, and the team has nearly 300 full-time employees.

It also noted a $67 million loan taken out against the parking lots at Dodger Stadium was set to mature Thursday. It was expected McCourt was going to refinance the loan.

"He's clearly running very low on options right now," said David Carter, executive director of USC Sports Business Institute. "What seems to be the case is a high-stakes chess game between Frank McCourt and MLB, and he's running out of pieces. This is one of the uglier weeks in Dodger history."

That's quite a contrast from the days of the O'Malleys.

Peter O'Malley's father, Walter, was the team's lawyer when he gained a controlling interest in the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1950, the same year Scully joined the organization.

The team, a fabled fixture of New York's borough of Brooklyn since the 19th century, broke baseball's color barrier when it signed Jackie Robinson as the first black major league player in 1947.

The Dodgers delighted their New York fans by winning their first World Series in 1955, then broke their hearts three years later by moving to Los Angeles, an act never entirely forgiven.

In Los Angeles, the winning ways continued, with World Series championships in 1959, '63, '65, '81 and '88, and memorable performances by Hall of Famers Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax, who dominated hitters like few pitchers have before or since.

Ten years after Orel Hershiser, Kirk Gibson and Tom Lasorda helped the Dodgers win their last crown, the O'Malley family sold the team in 1998, when News Corp. bought the club, signaling the beginning of changing times for the franchise.

Since then, employees have churned through the club as quickly as wins and losses piled up.

In April, MLB took the extraordinary step of assuming control of the troubled franchise. Former Texas Rangers President Tom Schieffer was appointed to monitor the team on behalf of Selig, who said he took the action because he was concerned about the team's finances and how the Dodgers are being run.

Among the 40 largest unsecured claims, totaling about $75 million, are former Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez at nearly $21 million; Andruw Jones at $11 million; pitcher Hiroki Kuroda at $4.4 million; and the Chicago White Sox, which share a spring training facility with the Dodgers in Arizona, at $3.5 million.

Dodgers pitcher Ted Lilly, who's owed more than $3 million, said he hadn't talked to a single teammate about the bankruptcy filing.

"I'm not too sure what that means," Lilly said before Monday night's game at Minnesota. "As far as I know, I'm pitching tomorrow."

McCourt has defended his stewardship, saying he had made it profitable and successful. He also said the Dodgers have tried for almost a year to get Selig to approve the Fox transaction, which would have provided McCourt with $385 million up front and was vital to a binding settlement reached this month by him and Jamie McCourt.

"He's turned his back on the Dodgers, treated us differently, and forced us to the point we find ourselves in today," McCourt's statement said. He was not made available for further comment Monday.

"He's been an embarrassment to this franchise," Daley said, referring to McCourt. "The sooner he gets the hell out of town, the better off we'll all be as Dodger fans."

A booze-swilling, pot-smoking, hard-swearing seventh-grade teacher rallies to get out of the classroom for good by wrangling a rich substitute teacher into marriage in this comedy from director Jake Kasdan (Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story). Cynical teacher Elizabeth (Cameron Diaz) hates her job. She can't wait for the day she finds a man who makes enough cash to let her walk away from her life of middle-school misery, and when her fianc? cancels their wedding plans, her frantic search intensifies. Just when it starts to look like Elizabeth will have to muscle her way through another semester of skull-crushing hangovers, however, handsome substitute Scott Delacorte (Justin Timberlake) shows up at school sporting a fancy wristwatch and the promise of a care-free future. But in order to earn her meal ticket, Elizabeth will have to out-cute perky fellow teacher Amy (Lucy Punch). And it won't be easy, because Scott is crushing on Amy hard. Review:

Bad Teacher is supposed to be crass, rude and outlandish. While it?s hardly kid friendly the biggest shock is how incredibly unfunny the entire way through. Cameron Diaz is game throughout so it?s hard to lay the blame on her. She plays the superficial gold digging teacher with great gusto but she?s limited by a script that?s peppered with cartoon characters. A prime example of this is Lucy Punch?s character whose like so sort of freakazoid valleygirl which supposed to serve as a foil to Diaz. It never works and it provides some of the biggest dead spots in the film, it doesn?t help that Punch looks like some sort of Lady Gaga mannequin come to life. Justin Timberlake is handicapped in similar fashion. Jason Segel is the only supporting player that allowed to shine. Various others talented comedians pepper the film but it almost feels like window shopping since their never allowed to actually be funny. Jake Kasdan directs it all with incredibly broad strokes and he never finds a good rhythm for it. As a result the movie feels like it goes on forever, aimlessly without any narrative force and even worse no laughs.

China's Prime Minister Wen Jiabao has been talking up the euro ahead of a three-day business summit in Britain.

Mr Wen said China had increased its holdings of euro bonds in recent years and was confident the eurozone could overcome its problems.

Mr Wen is due to attend the UK-China Strategic Summit and meet Prime Minister David Cameron.

He will also visit the Chinese-owned MG car plant at Longbridge, near Birmingham.

The plant used to make MG Rover cars but is now owned by the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation.

Mr Wen will attend the launch of the MG6 Magnette, which is designed in Britain but assembled from parts manufactured in China.

He is also due to visit Stratford-upon-Avon and watch a short performance of Shakespeare's work.

Mr Wen flew into Birmingham airport on Saturday night from Hungary, where he was asked about the debt crising in Europe, and especially the situation in Greece.

Mr Wen said that he was bringing trust at a time when the Europe's debt crisis was expanding.

China has foreign reserves of around $3tn and is believed to be diversifying some of its holdings from US dollars into euros and other currencies.

Last week dissident artist Ai Weiwei was released from custody in China, heading off protests which might have greeted Mr Wen's visit to Britain.

On Saturday news broke that another prominent Chinese dissident, Hu Jia, had been released from prison and reunited with his family.

He had campaigned for the environment and in support of patients with Aids.

But the Free Tibet pressure group has promised to hold demonstrations outside Downing Street when Mr Wen goes to meet Mr Cameron.

The UK-China Strategic Summit is an annual meeting - the last one took place in Beijing in November last year.

With China having overtaken Japan as the world's second largest economy, many European companies are looking for investment, while Chinese acquisitions in Europe have also been increasing.

Mr Wen is thought to be leading a Chinese bid for work on the HS2 high-speed rail line between London and Birmingham.

Chinese ambassador Liu Xiaoming said last week China was looking for "flagship projects" and had "the knowledge, expertise and experience" to assist with HS2.

Earlier this month, Chinese PC maker Lenovo agreed to buy German electronics retailer Medion in a bid to boost its market share in Europe.

In Senegal, religious leaders join constitutional debate

Senegal President Abdoulaye Wade abandoned his efforts to lower the electoral threshold for a presidential victory. In a 95 percent Muslim country, religious leaders can influence the debate.

This week, tension mounted in Senegal as President Abdoulaye Wade moved to introduce two major constitutional changes: the creation of a vice president position and a reduction in the threshold (25 percent, instead of the previous 50 percent plus) necessary for a presidential candidate to win a first round victory. Protests broke out in major cities. Youth burned the homes of ruling party members. The European Union and the US expressed concern. Then yesterday, the day that the amendment was due for a vote in parliament, Wade withdrew the plan to change the electoral threshold.

These developments have been well covered by Reuters, the BBC, VOA, The New York Times, and other outlets. What hasn?t received as much international coverage is the role of Senegal?s Muslim leaders. In a country that?s 95 percent Muslim, and where most of the Muslim belong to large Sufi brotherhoods legendary for their political influence (when they choose to wield it, that is), how did these leaders react to such a major political crisis?

A little background: the two largest Sufi brotherhoods in Senegal are the Tijaniyya and the Mouridiyya (with which Wade is publicly affiliated). Leadership of the brotherhoods is passed from one relative to another, typically from brother to brother before passing to the next generation. This structure in some ways encourages younger leaders, or marabouts, to build their own constituencies ? younger marabouts who know that their turn as khalifa (head sheikh) is far off, or will never come, have some incentive to seek other avenues for exercising influence. These young marabouts don?t go so far as to create their own orders, but some have created their own distinct movements that exist (sometimes uneasily) within the larger brotherhood. This gives rise to a significant difference in style between the older marabouts, who have largely ceased giving explicit political directions to their disciples,* and the younger marabouts, some of whom do speak out.

The role of the older marabouts in the current crisis was potentially decisive. Wade?s Minister of Justice, Cheikh Tidiane Sy, cited the influence of religious leaders (Fr) as one reason Wade backed off his plan. The khalifas of the Mouridiyya and the Tijaniyya both called, through spokesmen, for calm. According to one source, both khalifas also sent emissaries to privately dissuade Wade from pursuing the amendment, and the Tijani leadership publicly condemned the amendment (Fr). These efforts, and particularly the appeal from the Mouride leader, are seen as the main factor in Wade?s retreat.
