Nintendo trims red ink, lowers forecast for year

TOKYO (AP) ? Nintendo Co. trimmed its red ink for the fiscal first half to a 28 billion yen ($350 million) loss, but the Japanese game maker lowered its sales and profit forecasts for the full year ahead of the launch of its new Wii U home console.

Nintendo, which did not break down quarterly results, had reported a 70 billion yen loss for the April-September period last year.

Nintendo, the maker of Super Mario and Pokemon games, has been hard hit by the popularity of smartphones and other nifty mobile devices that are luring people away from game machines such as Nintendo's Wii console and handhelds such as the Nintendo 3DS. Rivals Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp. have struggled against the same trend.

Nintendo lowered its profit forecast for the full business year through March 2013 to 6 billion yen ($75 million) from 20 billion yen because of weakening demand in recent months and the strong yen. It cut its sales forecast to 810 billion yen ($10.1 billion) from 820 billion yen.

Nintendo is banking on the Wii U, the first major game console to arrive in stores in years, to boost its bottomline. It goes on sale Nov. 18 in the U.S., later that month in Europe and Dec. 8 in Japan.

It has a touch-screen tablet controller and TV-watching features but it's unclear whether it will prove a hit like the original Wii, which offered a new kind of entertainment when it arrived in 2006 with its wand-like controller that players could swing like a racket or a fishing pole.

Nintendo also said the lower forecast reflected an unfavorable exchange rate. The yen has been continually rising in recent years, and that erodes the value of overseas earnings for Japanese exporters like Nintendo.

Declining sales of the current Wii, in hardware and software games, also contributed to the lowered forecast, the Kyoto-based company said.

Stocks stabilize on Wall Street after a sell-off

NEW YORK (AP) ? The steep losses finally stopped Wednesday as the stock market turned calm, a day after one of its biggest sell-offs of the year. Major indexes wavered between minor gains and losses in midday trading.

Boeing, one of the 30 large companies in the Dow Jones industrial average, said it expects to deliver more airplanes and raised its estimates for profits this year. Boeing's quarterly earnings also beat analysts' estimates. Its stock rose $1, or 1.4 percent, to $73.82.

The Dow climbed 9 points to 13,111 shortly after noon. The Standard & Poor's 500 index slipped less than one point to 1,412 while the Nasdaq composite index sank seven points to 2,983.

"Today we're assessing the damage," said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott. "Everybody just got clobbered yesterday."

Lower corporate revenue and expectations for the rest of the year drove the Dow down 243 points Tuesday, its third-biggest drop this year. DuPont, 3M, UPS and Xerox all reported lower sales than a year ago.

"It seemed out of the blue, but what we were seeing was stock prices adjusting to corporate profitability," Luschini said.

Facebook was poised for its best day since its stock market debut in May. The company said late Tuesday that 14 percent of its advertising revenue came from mobile devices, allaying some investor concerns.

The social network's stock soared $3.91 to $23.44, a jump of 20 percent. Facebook has swung widely since its IPO at $38, and has traded as low as $17.55.

Another Dow stock, AT&T, said it added the fewest wireless customers since 2003, far behind Verizon Wireless. AT&T's results still managed to beat the estimates of financial analysts. AT&T fell 25 cents to $34.75.

A measure of manufacturing in China, the world's second-largest economy after the United States, improved this month to a three-month high. China's white-hot economic growth has been slowing.

In the U.S., bond prices inched lower, sending yields up. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note edged up to 1.77 percent from 1.76 percent late Tuesday.

Among other stocks in the news:

? Netflix plunged $10.13 a share, 15 percent, to $58.06. Late Tuesday, it slashed its prediction for how many U.S. video-streaming subscribers it would add this year to 4.7 million to 5 million. It had predicted it would add as many as 7 million.

? Dow Chemical rose $1.70 to $30.25. The company announced a wide-ranging restructuring plan late Tuesday that includes cutting 2,400 jobs and closing 20 manufacturing facilities. The company cited slowing economic growth in Europe and elsewhere.

? Tempur-Pedic plunged $6.93 to $24.94, a loss of 22 percent. The maker of premium memory foam mattresses reported revenue that was well below the estimates of Wall Street analysts. The company also cut its estimates for full-year profits and revenue.

Finding the next Facebook - Business & Economics News ...

12 months after the launch of Facebook in Harvard University in 2004 over one million users flocked to use it. Eight years since its formation and today 955 million use it daily. The story of Facebook and the speed that a university played in catapulting it to celebrity is well known and here at the Faculty an annual competition is held to find a future Facebook.

60 Business and Economics students recently battled it out in a bid to prove that their online business plan could be the next big idea at the 2012 Internet Marketing Start-Up Competition. The competition aims to capitalise on the fertile ground Universities provide for start-ups like Facebook.

Social media image

Facebook currently has a 93 ? 97% uptake rate by undergraduate students.

Finalists pitched to a panel of Australia?s most prominent industry experts and angel investors including Melbourne Angels? David Bennett, ?CEO?s Allan Dib of Voxcom and Andrew?Fiori-Dea of Future Capital Development Fund Ltd and government advisor Jim Landau. The modern entrepreneurs competed for a first prize of $4,000 in seeding capital.

Hybrid coupon-based dating site The Hitch was the overall winner. The Hitch proposed a dating website which integrated a coupon element, whereby couples could receive discounted goods and services or singles could organise a discount date with another person through the website.

?Our product aims to create a community by bringing couples from across Australia together to share their dating experiences, review services offered by the website and meet new people which we felt best fitted the Australian market? Evelyn Tan a member of the wining team said.

With such proximity to early adopters and idea generators, the competition gives students an opportunity to trial their idea in a highly receptive environment. The Faculty is furthering the recent global trend of giving support to innovative student start-ups while legitimising the entrepreneurial path.

Participant Kenneth Lew found the competition a ?breath of fresh air? who, as a part of the second placed team, The Droids, received a share in prizes valued at $550.

?I felt that entering this competition would be a great opportunity for me to explore my entrepreneurial side and think outside the box by developing creative solutions to unmet needs in the market? he said ?but the hardest part of the competition was selecting our final pitch from a huge range of ideas?.

Evelyn agrees, ?this competition was great exposure, as we have never developed a business plan or presented to venture capitalists before? she said ?it was challenging but opened our eyes as to what to expect in the real world and this felt rewarding?.

Dr Brent Coker, Internet Marketing lecturer, called the event a fantastic?success. ?This is the first time I have ever heard one of the venture?capitalist?judges say ?Who do I make the cheque out to?? after?listening?to a student presentation? he said ?the students really did make me feel proud?.

The Internet Marketing Competition is an annual event available to those enrolled in Dr Coker?s Internet Marketing class which is available at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

London black taxi cab maker nears end of the road

(Reuters) - Manganese Bronze, maker of London's black taxi, said it is set to appoint administrators after failing to secure funding needed to survive, putting hundreds of British jobs at risk.

Manganese Bronze, whose taxis have been on British streets since 1948, had been in talks with its largest shareholders, including China's Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd, to secure a last-minute bailout.

"The issue here was not a lack of opportunity around the quantum of support being offered," Chief Executive John Russell told Reuters on Monday. "It was around the ability of Manganese Bronze, a company with a very weak balance sheet, to take on the level of debt required."

Russell said the company had discussed an injection of "tens of millions" of pounds with parties including the company's two largest shareholders, Geely and Toscafund Asset Management.

Accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers is set to be appointed as administrator.

Earlier this month, the company had said its financial position was unclear after the discovery of a safety defect in its new TX4 model that led to a recall of 400 taxis and a halt to sales.

The recall was the latest in a spate of issues that have plagued the taxi maker which coincided with market share gains by rival Eco City Vehicles's Mercedes Vito taxi. Japan's Nissan Motor Co Ltd is also due to launch its own taxi in Britain.

Manganese Bronze, based in Coventry, in central England, has failed to turn a profit since 2007. It suspended trading in its shares earlier this month.

"It's a great shame, because they (Manganese Bronze) build the best cab in the world, but it's no surprise. They never listened to the drivers," said Michael, driver of a Manganese cab in the capital for 30 years. He pointed to the cost of the vehicles (at least 37,000 pounds per car), high maintenance bills and a lack of after sales support.

"They took it for granted, were too complacent, thought we'd always go back to them and buy another cab but the drivers aren't doing that anymore."

Britain's Unite union called on the British government to support the firm and protect the 300 UK jobs at risk.

"We're hopeful that somehow or another somebody's going to be able to resurrect it, either the liquidators or someone's going to come in and take it over," said Steve MacNamara, general secretary of the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association.

"We're concerned because the black cab is a great iconic part of London."

As well as technical difficulties, Manganese has been hit by a weak economy and delays in fulfilling key orders. Manganese Bronze sold 1,502 taxis last year, 9 percent fewer than in 2010.

Earlier this year, it found a 3.9 million pound hole in its accounts causing a delay to the release of its half year results. They were eventually published late last month with the firm reporting a pretax loss of 4.6 million pounds on sales 11 percent lower than the same period a year ago.

Russell said it was still "in dialogue" with Geely after talks over funding broke down last week. "Geely will be involved in the process of administration and they will make their decision to be a part of the outcome," said Russell.

GENEVA - Forget the seven Tour de France victories. Forget the yellow jersey celebrations on the Champs Elysees. Forget the name that dominated the sport of cycling for so many years.

As far as cycling's governing body is concerned, Lance Armstrong is out of the record books.

Once considered the greatest rider in Tour history, the American was cast out Monday by his sport, formally stripped of his seven titles and banned for life for his involvement in what U.S. sports authorities describe as a massive doping program that tainted all of his greatest triumphs.

"Lance Armstrong has no place in cycling and he deserves to be forgotten in cycling," said Pat McQuaid, the president said of the International Cycling Union. "This is a landmark day for cycling."

McQuaid announced that his group, known as UCI, accepted sanctions imposed by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency and would not appeal them to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. McQuaid said he was "sickened" by some of the evidence detailed by USADA in its 200-page report and hundreds of pages of supporting testimony and documents.

The condemnation by cycling's most senior official confirmed Armstrong's pariah status, after the UCI had backed Armstrong at times in trying to seize of the doping investigation from USADA. McQuaid said the UCI endorsed a life ban for Armstrong after almost two weeks studying the American agency's evidence, and will meet Friday to discuss going after his 2000 Olympic bronze medal.

Tour director Christian Prudhomme said he no longer considers Armstrong to be a champion from 1999-2005 and wants him to pay back his prize money.

"We wish that there is no winner for this period," he said in Paris. "For us, very clearly, the titles should remain blank. Effectively, we wish for these years to remain without winners."

Armstrong's representatives had no immediate comment, but the rider was defiant in August as he chose not to fight USADA in one of the agency's arbitration hearings. He argued the process was rigged against him.

"I know who won those seven Tours, my teammates know who won those seven Tours, and everyone I competed against knows who won those seven Tours," Armstrong said then. "The toughest event in the world where the strongest man wins. Nobody can ever change that."

USADA said Armstrong should be banned and stripped of his Tour titles for "the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen" within his U.S. Postal Service and Discovery Channel teams. He will lose all his race results since August 1998.

The agency welcomed the decision by UCI, following months of sparring between the two organizations.

"Today, the UCI made the right decision in the Lance Armstrong case," USADA CEO Travis Tygart said in a statement, which called on cycling to continue to fight doping. "There are many more details of doping that are hidden, many more doping doctors, and corrupt team directors and the omerta has not yet been fully broken."

The USADA report said Armstrong and his teams used steroids, the blood booster EPO and blood transfusions. The report included statements from 11 former teammates who testified against Armstrong, including that he pressured them to take banned drugs.

"I was sickened by what I read in the USADA report," McQuaid said, singling out the testimony of former teammate David Zabriskie. "The story he told of how he was coerced and to some extent forced into doping is just mind boggling."

Armstrong denies doping, saying he passed hundreds of drug tests - he has claimed as many as 500. UCI conducted 218 tests and there were another 51 by USADA, although they are not the only drug-testing bodies. USADA's report, released earlier this month, was aimed at showing why the agency ordered the sanctions against him.

"At the moment Lance Armstrong hasn't admitted to anything, yet all the evidence is there in this report that he doped," McQuaid said.

On Sunday, Armstrong greeted about 4,300 cyclists at his Livestrong charity's fundraiser bike ride in Texas, telling the crowd he's faced a "very difficult" few weeks.

"I've been better, but I've also been worse," Armstrong, a cancer survivor, told the crowd.

While drug use allegations have followed the 41-year-old Armstrong throughout much of his career, the USADA report has badly damaged his reputation. Longtime sponsors Nike, Trek Bicycles and Anheuser-Busch dropped him last week, and Armstrong also stepped down last week as chairman of Livestrong, the cancer awareness charity he founded 15 years ago after surviving testicular cancer which spread to his lungs and brain.

After the UCI decision Monday, another longtime Armstrong sponsor, Oakley sunglasses, cut ties with the rider.

Armstrong's astonishing return from life-threatening illness to the summit of cycling offered an inspirational story that transcended the sport. However, his downfall has ended "one of the most sordid chapters in sports history," USADA said in its report published two weeks ago.

The decision to create a seven-year hole in the record books marks a shift from how organizers treated similar cases in the past.

When Alberto Contador was stripped of his 2010 Tour victory for a doping violation, organizers awarded the title to Andy Schleck. In 2006, Oscar Pereiro was awarded the victory after the doping disqualification of American rider Floyd Landis.

USADA also thinks the Tour titles should not be given to other riders who finished on the podium, such was the level of doping during Armstrong's era.

The agency said 20 of the 21 riders on the podium in the Tour from 1999 through 2005 have been "directly tied to likely doping through admissions, sanctions, public investigations" or other means. It added that of the 45 riders on the podium between 1996 and 2010, 36 were by cyclists "similarly tainted by doping."

The world's most famous cyclist could still face further sports sanctions and legal challenges. Armstrong could lose that 2000 Olympic time-trial bronze medal and may be targeted with civil lawsuits from ex-sponsors or even the U.S. government.

McQuaid said the UCI's board will meet Friday to discuss the Olympic issue and whether to update other race results due to Armstrong's disqualifications.

The IOC said in a statement it would study the UCI's response and wait to receive their full decision.

"It is good to see that all parties involved in this case are working together to tackle this issue," the IOC said.

A so-called "Truth and Reconciliation" commission, which could offer a limited amnesty to riders and officials who confessed to doping practices, will also be discussed, UCI legal adviser Philippe Verbiest said.

In total, 26 people - including 15 riders - testified to USADA that Armstrong and his teams used and trafficked banned substances and routinely used blood transfusions. Among the witnesses were loyal sidekick George Hincapie and admitted dopers Tyler Hamilton and Landis.

USADA's case also implicated Italian sports doctor Michele Ferrari, depicted as the architect of doping programs, and longtime coach and team manager Johan Bruyneel. Ferrari - who has been targeted in an Italian prosecutor's probe - and another medical official, Dr. Luis Garcia del Moral, received lifetime bans.

Bruyneel, team doctor Pedro Celaya and trainer Jose "Pepe" Marti opted to take their cases to arbitration with USADA. The agency could call Armstrong as a witness at those hearings.

Bruyneel, a Belgian former Tour de France rider, lost his job last week as manager of the RadioShack-Nissan Trek team which Armstrong helped found to ride for in the 2010 season.

Home Exchange Holidays - Go Gingham | Stylishly Frugal Living

Home Swap

My favorite way to travel is to home swap and after 8 home exchanges in 8 years (4 in the U.S. and 4 in Europe), I?m ready to go again! When you home exchange, you get to stay in a home with a kitchen, live like a local in a non-tourist area, and skip having a bill handed to you upon checkout. Free at checkout? Yes, please, sign me up!

I also love that while you?re traveling, your home is occupied and being cared for during your vacation and you didn?t have to pay for those services either. Yes ? free again! Home swapping is very frugal, fancy, and fun but for most people, it comes with concerns.

Here are the home exchange concerns I hear most often:

Home Exchange concerns

When I first brought up the idea of home swapping to my husband, prior to our first home exchange to Paris, he was pretty much against it. He had concerns about the treasured items in our home (luckily, we don?t have any) and I had to do some research to convince him that inviting strangers into our home was a good idea. This is what we?ve found with home swapping:? once you communicate by email and perhaps talk on Skype or the telephone with your home exchange partner, they?re no longer strangers but they?re more like friends.

That?s another benefit to traveling: making new friends.

Home exchange concerns usually fall into these four categories and here are some suggestions to consider if you?re on the fence about this method of travel.

food and people of spain

Food, sites, and new friends from our Spain 2012 trip.

  1. Insurance: check in with your home owner?s insurance agent and car insurance, if someone will be driving your car. These have been no problem with our agencies but we did have to pay an additional rider (a fee) for a home exchange in Austria (to use their car). Not every country has the same rules so be prepared for a possible fee.
  2. Personal documents: bank statements, tax returns and personal letters should be put away. It?s best to not leave these items out.? We?ve never had any problems but we just put these in a locked closet or the basement. When my kids were younger, they worried about their toys being played with so we tucked those away on a shelf.
  3. Household items: put away priceless artwork and jewelry. If you?re like us and don?t have any of those items, then you?ll be set. We traded homes with a family who had a beautiful home filled with artwork and statues everywhere ? it would have been impossible for them to put it all away. We were very careful in their home.
  4. Renter: If you?re a renter, check with the owner of your home or apartment. Your rental agreement should be a good place to start.
Home Swap to Spain

Home swapping means you get a kitchen ? live and cook like a local ? yes, we cooked those sardines but not the fish head!

Here are a few questions I?ve received recently from readers about home swapping:

We?d like to try a home swap for the first time, but can?t seem to find a free place to start?.any ideas?

Many home exchange service providers offer a 2-week trial period. This is a good opportunity to see how a particular website works and how easy it is to contact people.

I like the idea of trying something for 2-weeks but we?ve never had luck arranging a home exchange in a 2-week time period. It?s always taken us longer to find someone to trade homes with and then there?s a ?dance? that goes along with home swapping ? timing? pets? number of bedrooms? car swapping or no car? All of these details take agreeing or not agreeing to and there are emails back and forth.

It helps me to keep in mind that for the price of 1-night in a hotel room, I can pay for a 1-year membership to a home exchange service. There?s no limit to the number of exchanges that can be arranged either, during the 1-year membership.

We?re worried about our financial and private documents that will be left at our house. What do you suggest we do with these?

If you?re worried about your financial and private documents, lock your documents in a file drawer or a closet. We?ve never had anything stolen or broken and our home exchanges have all been positive experiences.

If you would have a better vacation knowing that your personal information and bank account numbers were under lock and key, then you should lock them up.

Most homes we have stayed in have a closet or a drawer or two locked up. It?s very common practice.

Home Swap How to

Who would want to visit my city?

Your city as a destination is desirable to someone and you may never know why or when that may be. People travel all the time for different reasons. I just replied to an email this morning from a couple in Vancouver, British Columbia who need to be in our city over the winter holidays for a family gathering and are trying to arrange an exchange.

My house is in a somewhat perpetual state of remodeling and I have hesitated to move forward with home swapping because it?s a work in progress. My home is nice, but not cool or unusual. Who would want to stay in my house?

Unless your home is crumbling into the ground, you?re fine. Obviously, if you?re house is in the middle of a major re-do and under construction, you?re not going to want to leave your home. Every single home we?ve stayed in (4 home exchanges in the U.S. and 4 home exchanges in Europe) has had what we call ?House Tricks? and our most recent exchange even had construction happening on the outside of the building. People don?t home swap to stay inside, they home swap to travel and to experience life as a local, and have a free place to stay.

Go Gingham: Home Exchange vacation

Wallenstein Garden, Prague, Czech Republic

While I leave out our ?House Tricks? manual about our home, I also leave notes around our house to say how things work. Water faucet quirks, doorknobs that fall off easily, and how our stove light is broken and says it?s ?on? all the time are all places that I leave an extra note to our exchange partners. Not one house we?ve ever stayed in has been perfect.

Home swappers aren?t looking for a perfect home ? just a place to call home ? for a time.

When you sign up for a home exchange website, you can view pictures of other people?s homes and they can see your pictures of your home, that you?ve uploaded. You?ll see what amenities other people have to offer and they can see what you have.

Home swapping makes traveling affordable, you get to live like a local, and make new friends. Home swapping has allowed our family to travel places we would have never considered or been able to afford if we didn?t have a place to stay for free.

If you?d like me to speak to your group or organization about home swapping or traveling with children, please check here.

Have you ever done a home exchange? Would you consider doing one?

Essential Business Guide for Using Social Media | EYES IN EYES IN

To help business owners understand the true benefit of social media, Ajay Tejwani has written ?The Social Media Action Plan,? a comprehensive guide for planning, implementing and measuring social media efforts. Knowing that most companies utilize Facebook and Twitter on a tactical level, Tejwani wrote this book to educate entrepreneurs and large enterprises about developing a strategy for long term success versus posting messages for short term attention.

In the book, Tejwani explains why social media is vital to business operations now and in the future. He advises business leaders to have a plan in place before jumping into social media. ?Social media is not just Facebook and Twitter. There are many channels for social media, and knowing how to utilize them for the benefit of your business is crucial to change management and customer loyalty,? Tejwani said.

As an expert in the field, he sees that we?re moving into a social economy, and relationships will be our new currency. ?As per Nielsen?s Social Media Report, nearly four out of five Internet users visit social media sites or blogs,? Tejwani said. ?Social media is the modern day word of mouth communication, and how businesses utilize social media?s power is what makes the difference between success and failure. Companies need to plan how social media is going to support their mission, and plan how they?re going to engage their customers and prospects.?

Tejwani says companies need to take a broader approach to social media, and have a CLEAR philosophy in order to: connect with customers, listen and acknowledge their feedback, and engage them in conversation about the product or service so that customers will, in turn, advocate for their business. Thereafter, repeat the process.

In addition to giving readers a broad perspective of social media marketing, the book also provides a planning template, online references and statistical data to guide business owners toward a successful online campaign. The book also includes best practices and ethical standards in which to follow, and it previews what?s on the horizon in terms of must-have online tools.

Tejwani, 39, is the owner and chief storyteller of MobileCommz, LLC an online marketing company in San Antonio, which he founded in 2008. Tejwani is the executive responsible for sales, operations and product development. The business, which has three employees in San Antonio, and an offshore IT development team of 30 people in Delhi, India, operates under the brand name of Social Media Sapiens.

The company provides online marketing services, such as Website redesign, mobile Websites, iPhone, iPad and Android application development, search engine optimization (SEO), Facebook applications, email marketing, text marketing and social media strategy consultation to small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as large corporations across the globe.

The company has clients in the U.S., the United Arab Emirates, Germany and Canada. Tejwani is a member of the North Chamber, The San Antonio Chamber, the Southwest Minority Supplier Development Council and the Greater Houston Partnership.

Protesters block roads in Lebanon after car bomb

BEIRUT (AP) ? Protesters burned tires and set up roadblocks around Lebanon on Saturday in a sign of boiling anger over a massive car bomb that killed a top security official and seven other people a day earlier ? a devastating attack that threatened to bring Syria's civil war to Lebanon.

The Lebanese Cabinet was scheduled to hold an emergency meeting Saturday as the country's opposition called for Prime Minister Najib Mikati to resign. The state-run National News Agency said security commanders would attend the meeting to discuss how to keep the peace.

The government declared a national day of mourning for the victims, who included Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, head of the intelligence division of Lebanon's domestic security forces. Dozens were wounded in Friday's blast in Beirut's mainly Christian Achrafieh neighborhood.

Many observers said the attack appeared to have links to the Syrian civil war, which has been raging for 19 months. Al-Hassan, 47, headed an investigation over the summer that led to the arrest of former Information Minister Michel Samaha, one of Syrian President Bashar Assad's most loyal allies in Lebanon.

Samaha, who is in custody, is accused of plotting a campaign of bombings and assassinations to spread sectarian violence in Lebanon at Syria's behest. Also indicted in the August sweep was Syrian Brig. Gen. Ali Mamlouk, one of Assad's highest aides.

Lebanon's fractious politics are closely entwined with Syria's. The countries share a web of political and sectarian ties and rivalries, often causing events on one side of the border to echo on the other. Lebanon's opposition is an anti-Syrian bloc, while the prime minister and much of the government are pro-Syrian.

The civil war in Syria has laid bare Lebanon's sectarian tensions as well.

Many of Lebanon's Sunnis have backed Syria's mainly Sunni rebels, while Shiites have tended to back Assad. Al-Hassan was a Sunni whose stances were widely seen to oppose Syria and the country's most powerful ally in Lebanon, the Shiite militant group Hezbollah.

On Friday, protesters in mostly Sunni areas closed roads with burning tires and rocks in Beirut, the southern city of Sidon, the northern city of Tripoli and several towns in the eastern Bekaa Valley.

The highway linking central Beirut with the city's international airport was closed, as well as the highway that links the capital with Syria, the officials said on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Rafik Khoury, editor of the independent Al-Anwar daily, said the assassination was an attempt to draw Lebanon into the conflict in Syria, which has been the most serious threat to the Assad family's 40-year dynasty.

"The side that carried the assassination knows the reactions and dangerous repercussions and is betting that it will happen. Strife is wanted in Lebanon," Khoury wrote.

Cat leads owner to discovery of ancient Roman ruins

A cat led its owner into an ancient Roman tomb that may be 2,000 years old. (AFP/Reuters)Mirko Curti was chasing his cat through the streets of his village on Tuesday night when the cat inadvertently discovered a set of ancient Roman ruins.

"The cat managed to get into a grotto and we followed the sound of its meowing," Curti told the Guardian.

When he caught up to the animal, it had crawled into an opening in the side of a cliff. Inside the opening, Curti stumbled upon a 2,000-year-old tomb "piled with bones" and ancient Roman urns.

The tomb was discovered just outside a residential area in the Roman city of Via di Pietralata.

Archeologists who were called to the site have speculated that it dates back to sometime between the 1st century B.C. and the 2nd century A.D.

Curti described the discovery as "the most incredible experience" of his life.

The archeologists said that recent rains in the area were likely responsible for exposing the tomb and noted that several other similar discoveries have been made in the area in recent years.

A Girl's Guide To Brand Advocacy | Business 2 Community

There are lots of buzz words and phrases being thrown around these days within the inbound marketing industry, but the one that makes my heart skip a beat is (drumroll, please) ?
brand advocacy! You might think that an advocate is someone who RTs a brand or consistently uses a company?s coupons or loyalty cards, or even supports a sponsored giveaway on a brand?s blog.

But let?s break it down, folks: These factors alone do not a brand advocate make. If a year ago you asked me, ?Hey girl, who are you a brand advocate for?? I would have responded, ?Aldo, Qdoba, and Beyonce. Always Beyonce.? But after further R&D, does that statement still hold true? Let?s explore.

Aldo1. Aldo

Why I love you: Aldo is my go-to when it comes to the flyest kicks, heels and sandals. They also carry bomb handbags and accessories. But products alone aren?t enough?their customer service is out of this world! If the store is out of my size, I can have a pair of shoes in my size shipped to my doorstep within days at no additional cost.

Is this advocacy? Survey says, ?No.? While I do appreciate a studded wedge ankle boot waiting on my doorstep as much as the next girl, I don?t shout Aldo from the rooftops. Do I ?Like? them on Facebook and ?Follow? on Twitter? Yes. Do I seek out Aldo?s updates and tweets to engage with the brand or share their message? No.

2. Qdoba

Why I love you: Two words ? queso and coupons.

Is this advocacy? Nope. I have to admit that I do frequent my local Qdoba maybe a little too often, but this is solely because I receive email or text coupons. I wouldn?t go nearly as often if I didn?t earn 85 points per entr?e on my Qdoba Card or receive BOGO offers on my smartphone.

3. Beyonce

Why I love you: Where do I begin?! Beyonce is a Survivor, an Independent Woman, and a Run the World Girl. (See what I did there?) She is everything I strive to be. I believe in the message she delivers through catchy hooks, the most entertaining concerts the world has ever seen, and philanthropic efforts such as her involvement in World Humanitarian Day. The main thing here: I believe in why she does what she does.

Is this advocacy? Absolutely, it is. Because I believe in Beyonce?s message, I don?t need coupons or incentives. I?ll gladly drive 3.5+ hours to sit in nose bleed seats at United Center in Chicago to catch even the tiniest glimpse of her live performance, and then tell the world how amazing it is via every social channel I can think of.

While Internet and social marketing are becoming essential to a brand?s success in developing and motivating advocates, the buck doesn?t stop there. It?s not enough to talk the talk?brands must walk the walk in real life. For example, I had a terrible experience with a specific company (that shall not be named) regarding a warranty on a router. Via emails, live chats and many a phone convo, my issue was dragged on for days, all while I was sans wireless Internet ?a first-world problem, but a problem nonetheless.

Fed up with all of the frustration, I marched into the Best Buy location where I purchased the router (six months ago ? clearly outside of the store?s return time frame) and explained my issue. Within minutes I was walking to my car, new router in hand and tweeting about my experience. I took every store survey they gave me and told everyone I know about my awesome experience. Best Buy accepted the challenge and made me a brand advocate for life.

To quote Simon Sinek, ?People don?t buy what you do. They buy why you do it.? When you look at brand advocates this way, it makes sense?but the process is not easy. How do you get potential advocates to identify with your brand and believe in your message online and IRL? On the flip side, who are you a brand advocate for? Why? Tell me in the comments.

Your Brain On FoodYour Health Journal | Your Health Journal

From CNN?..

We all know that what you eat can change your physical appearance. It also alters how your body functions, making it more or less difficult to pump blood, grow healthy bones or process insulin.

New research presented this week at the Neuroscience 2012 conference suggests that what you eat can even alter your brain ? and vice versa.

Timothy Verstynen and his colleagues used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to observe the brain activity in 29 adults. The study participants were shown words on a screen in various colors and asked to identify the color, not the word. Sometimes it was easy ? the word red printed in red; other times it was harder, like seeing the word red printed in blue.

The overweight and obese participants? brains showed more activity during difficult questions, suggesting they were working harder to get the same answers.
Verstynen said the results imply that obese people are less efficient at making complex decisions, which could be important for controlling impulse behavior.

His team theorizes that unhealthy eating choices can lead to disrupted brain connections that lead to weakened brain performance, which can lead to making more unhealthy choices.

In other words, it?s a vicious cycle.

A second study, presented by Dr. Tony Goldstone, showed the brain?s orbitfrontal cortex may play a big role in how people make food choices. This area encodes the ?value? of a food, Goldstone said ? i.e. how rewarding or pleasurable it will be to eat.

Study participants were asked to fast overnight. In the morning they were given a breakfast of about 700 calories and shown photos of food while hooked up to an MRI machine. They were asked to fast again before another visit; the following morning they were not given breakfast and then shown the same photos.

#10?NASSAU, BAHAMAS
The Bahamas attracts millions of U.S. visitors to its busy capital ever year with picture-postcard promises of beautiful beaches and lazy seaside resorts. The reality?a busy capital filled with cruise ship day-trippers and beaches that are sometimes less than pristine?is a bit different, but the city still has its historic charms and the real paradise is just a boat ride away.

3?must-see attractions for first-timers in?Nassau:
  • Bay Street The main concourse of downtown Nassau is a pleasant waterfront promenade with great dockside caf?s and shops, although it can get overcrowded with tourists when cruise ships are in port.
  • Beaches of Andros Island Sadly, the beaches in Nassau leave much to be desired, with the exception of Saunders Beach and Cable Beach to the west. Going further west, off the island and out to sea, a fast ferry ride to Andros Island (around three hours) will deliver you to the castaway beaches you were promised when you booked your trip.
  • Queen's Staircase & Fort Fincastle Built by freed slaves in honor of Queen Victoria for emancipating the islands, the 65 limestone steps off an alley in downtown Nassau are a journey back to the 18th-century Bahamas, rising to Fort Fincastle, a defense fort for the British Royal Navy during the Caribbean's pirate days.
3 must-see attractions for return visitors in Nassau:
  • Fishing on the Bahamas The Bahamas is big fish country, with blue marlin, wahoo, billfish, and tuna all offshore and waiting for a lure. Renting your own charter boat for fishing is a bit pricey, but you can jump onto a group trip with other anglers through local companies like Born Free Fishing.
  • Graycliff Manor The famous Graycliff Manor is a bit formal (jackets required for the gents). But for a taste of the Bahamas high life, it's an enchanting setting to enjoy an evening cocktail or glass of wine on the terrace of the 18th-century plantation house and watch the sun set over the Caribbean sea.
  • Atlantis Resort Okay, so you skipped it last time, but if you have the cash ($100 for a non-guest day pass), head across the Nassau causeway to the ridiculous mermaid castle/casino/resort that occupies Paradise Island. Atlantis is a must-see for the sprawling extravagance of the beachfront megaplex, with many secret beaches for relaxing in the sun.

Our favorite hotel: The antithesis of the big-money resorts in Nassau, Orange Hill Inn on West Bay Street is a quiet family-owned inn right on the beach (orangehill.com; doubles from $135).?

#9?PUNTA CANA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
The secret is out on Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. Already a popular beach destination for Europeans, the beach town is now on the American holiday radar as an inexpensive paradise within flight-hopping distance (it's just a two-hour flight from Miami).

3 must-see attractions for first-timers in Punta Cana:
  • Bavaro Beach It's the busiest beach in Punta Cana, crowded on the weekends with resort guests and lively with restaurants and shopping plazas along the shore. But it's also one of the prettiest?a white-sand beach of crystal-clear water and offshore coral reefs that stretches for six miles, so there are plenty of opportunities for you to claim your own private spot in the sun.
  • Santa Domingo The historic capital is a must-do day trip for any first-time visitor to the Dominican Republic. As evidenced by the numerous statues of Ponce de Leon and Christopher Columbus, the city takes its history seriously and many of the Spanish colonial buildings date back to the discovery of America, in 1492, when Columbus made landfall on Hispaniola (the island shared by Dominican Republic and Haiti).
  • Indigenous Eyes Park Just inland from the beaches in Punta Cana is this jungle park of beautiful waterfalls and lagoons for swimming. It's a private nature reserve run by Punta Cana Resort & Club (non-guests can buy a pass, for $65, to spend the day hiking and swimming in the lagoons, which are also known as "indigenous eyes").

3?must-see attractions for return visitors in Punta Cana:

  • Surfing on Macao Beach The sea may be rougher at Macao Beach, a stretch of golden sand shaded by palm trees to the north, but it's a much calmer and quieter beach than Bavaro. It's better for surfing, too; you can rent gear and take lessons at Macao Surf Camp (two-hour lessons from $60 per person) and afterward reward yourself with fresh grilled fish, fried plantains, and cold El Presidente beer at one of the local beach shacks on the sand.
  • Canyoning in CordilleraSeptentrional Adventurous travelers should head into the Cordillera Septentrional mountains for a chance to rappel down waterfalls into the gorgeous river canyons. (Tour outfitter Iguana Mama runs trips from $195 per person.)
  • Casa Ponce de Leon Ponce de Leon may be buried in Puerto Rico, but the best museum dedicated to his life is located in his historic house in Santa Domingo (011-809/551-0118, $1.27 to enter).

Our favorite hotel:?NH Punta Cana is a colorful and stylish resort on Bavaro Beach with plenty of modern perks like complimentary Wi-Fi and satellite TV (nh-hotels.com; doubles from $60).?

#8?BARCELONA, SPAIN
Barcelona beats Madrid for the top city in Spain visited by U.S. travelers, especially 20-somethings on holiday in Europe. It's an arty, youthful city on the sea with a labyrinth of narrow streets and gorgeous plazas, branded by fairy-tale architecture from the quirky godfather of modern Catalonian architecture, Antoni Gaudi.

3?must-see attractions for first-timers in Barcelona:
  • Las Ramblas This wide boulevard slopes through Barcelona from Pla?a de Catalunya in the city center all the way to Port Veil on the shore. The tree-shaded sidewalks are lined with shops, caf?s, and souvenir kiosks; in the center of the road, street performers entertain the daily parade of tourists.
  • Barceloneta The seaside neighborhood of Barceloneta is a perfect spot for an afternoon of wandering the quaint channel streets with a view of the ocean through gaps between tenements. Once you find your way to the beach, sit down and enjoy a glass of vino and tapas at Bar Electricitat in the market square.
  • Parc G?ell Set on the outskirts of the city, Barcelona's version of Central Park is a storybook land of strange stone pavilions designed by Gaudi among the green hills and trees. The park trails meander through the 37 wooded acres with mythical mosaic sculptures and curved terraces that look out over the city.
3?must-see attractions for return visitors in Barcelona:
  • El Born This lovely neighborhood of narrow labyrinthine streets is a great spot to hang out with the locals, shop for vintage fashions, and taste the best of Catalonian cuisine at cubby-hole caf?s and bars such as Casa Delfin.
  • Sagrada Familia Love it or hate it, there's no escaping the sight of Gaudi's gargantuan drip-castle cathedral wherever you are in Barcelona. So if you skipped a visit the first time, it's worth a trip to the neighborhood of Exiample for a view of Sagrada Familia up close. It's a playful and profound structure that blends the whimsical curvature of Art Nouveau with the dark angularity of Gothic architecture.
  • Barri Gotic This historic neighborhood of Gothic monuments reminds visitors of Barcelona's medieval past, before Gaudi put his stamp of eccentric modernity on the city. The wide plazas provide impromptu venues for Dark Ages-themed street performers.

Our favorite hotel:?Hotel Curious is a friendly boutique hotel near Las Ramblas in central Barcelona (hotelcurious.com; Doubles from $115).?

#7 MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA
The all-inclusive resorts on Montego Bay (and a chance to experience Rastafarian culture) make Jamaica one of the top Caribbean destinations for U.S. travelers. "Liming" (otherwise known as relaxing) on the beach is the order of the day and many vacationers don't venture far from their umbrella-shaded lounger. But if you do, there's plenty to explore on this Caribbean island.

3?must-see attractions for first-timers in Montego Bay:
  • Liming on Doctor's Cave Beach and Seven Mile Beach Doctor's Cave Beach is the most popular beach in Montego Bay and chances are your hotel will be within flip-flop distance. If you have wheels, Jamaica's most famous stretch of sand, Seven Mile Beach, is a short drive away in Negril. On either beach, be sure to look out for the famous jerk stands and kick back Jamaica-style with spicy grilled chicken and the national beer, Red Stripe.
  • Montego Bay Marine Park The coral reef from Tropical Beach to Rum Bottle Bay is an underwater nature reserve that's shelter to a wide array of exotic fish and sea anemones? and great snorkeling territory for visitors. Watch out for the Lion Fish, cute but poisonous!
  • Dunn River Falls Nearby in Ocho Rios, a short adventure into the rain forest will bring you to Dunn River Falls, a 180-foot waterfall that you can climb down, passing from lagoon to lagoon as the river rambles downstream.
3?must-see attractions for return visitors in Montego Bay:
  • Liming in Port Antonio So you've seen the tourist beaches of Montego Bay and you're looking for something more low key? Head east to Port Antonio and its magnificent beaches for a day in the sun.
  • Rose Hall Great House One of the oldest plantation estates on the island, the 18th-century Georgian mansion on the hill is a glimpse at the colonial past of Jamaica when it was a British stronghold for the export of sugar cane. Beware: The house is said to be haunted by the ghost of Annie Palmer, a voodoo practitioner and wife of the plantation owner, who was murdered in her sleep during the slave uprising of 1830. If you're feeling brave, book the night tour ($30 per person for a two-hour tour).
  • Blue and John Crow Mountain National Park A hike through the forests of this misty mountain park will introduce you to the oldest inhabitants of Jamaica?its species of exotic birds, monkeys, lizards, and the rare Giant Swallowtail Butterfly.

Our favorite hotel: Casa Blanca Beach Hotel is a classic Jamaican hotel with old-world styling situated in the middle of Montego Bay's Hip Strip near Doctor's Cave Beach (876-952-0720, doubles from $80).?

#6 ROME, ITALY
A modern city risen among the ruins of the greatest empire in history, Rome is No. 6 on our list as Italy's most popular destination for U.S. travelers. From the stone amphitheater of the Colosseum to the Roman Forum, where Caesar once spoke, and the immaculate Vatican City, Rome is a living monument to the ancient history of Europe.

3?must-see attractions for first-timers in Rome:
  • Ancient Highlights: the Colosseum, the Forum, and the Pantheon Follow the shouts of the tour guides and trinket hawkers to the ruins of the Colosseum, where the spectators of ancient Rome cheered on gladiator death matches and lion fights from the stands. The historic steps of the Roman Forum and the House of Nero just around the corner, and the massive temple dome to the pagan gods, the Pantheon, is a short walk west with many lesser ruins along the way.
  • Vatican City One of the most beautiful plazas in Rome leads to St. Peter's Basilica and the entrance to Vatican City. Of course, we sinners aren't allowed inside the Holy See, but the soaring marble interior of St. Peter's Basilica is a marvel worth its copper and no stop to Rome would be complete without a gander inside the Sistine Chapel at Michelangelo's Last Judgment.
  • Villa Borghese North of the city center is Rome's largest public park, which is just as grandly designed as any of Rome's wonders, with 148-acres of trees from all over the world, lakes, and ancient villas.
3?must-see attractions for return visitors in Rome:
  • MAXXI The 21st Century of the Arts museum, designed by renowned architect Zaha Hadid and opened in 2010, is Rome's grand foray into the modern art world. There are two museums here: the MAXXI collection of contemporary art featuring the likes of Maurizio Cattelan, and the MAXXI museum of architecture, dedicated to the art of architectural design and the modern-day wonders of the world (entrance $14 per person).
  • Circus Maximus & Avertine Hill The former chariot-racing grounds aren't much to look at these days when compared with the other ruins, but the verdant Avertine Hill above Circus Maximus is an amazing lookout perch and great retreat from the tourist hordes.
  • Testaccio & Ostiense These twin neighborhoods across the aqueduct from the ancient city center are the perfect place to wander, eat, drink, and experience modern-day Roman life (click here for a quick guide to the neighborhoods.)

Our?favorite hotel:?Hotel Mimosa is a cheery 14-room palazzo within a short stroll of Vatican City (hotelmimosa.net; doubles from $92).?

#5?TORONTO, CANADA
The modern city of Toronto straddles the shore of Lake Ontario with its blocky downtown of skyscrapers and needle-nose CN Tower. The fifth largest city in North America, the diverse population creates a vibrant cultural scene with many culinary delights.

3?must-see attractions for first-timers in Toronto:
  • Kensington Market Squared between Dundas Street W. and Spadina Avenue, this market neighborhood lined with ethnic groceries, fresh produce and spice stands, and tiny caf?s is a great place to taste Toronto's amazing food scene. Be sure to stop by on Sunday when Kensington Market becomes a no-car zone.
  • CN Tower The CN Tower, an olive-on-a-toothpick skyscraper rising 1,122 feet up into the Toronto skyline, has breathtaking views over the city, especially from a glass-walled elevator that takes you to the top at a snail's pace. There's even a rotating 360-degree restaurant for a sit-down meal afterward, if you can stomach it without getting dizzy.
  • Distillery District The 19th-century warehouses and distilleries that once produced the famous Gooderham & Worts Canadian whiskey have new life as a meandering 13-acre complex of vaulted-ceiling restaurants, patio caf?s, and art galleries set inside the historic brick buildings.
3?must-see attractions for return visitors in Toronto:
  • Hockey Hall of Fame Even if you're not a fan of the game, this hallowed hall of hockey inside Brookfield Place is a uniquely Canadian experience. Moody lighting fits the cathedral-esque interior, where visitors wander halls of lithograph portraits of NHL greats like Wayne Gretsky, gander at trophies and jerseys from championship games, and perhaps try their puck skills in the Be a Player exhibit (entrance $18 per person.)
  • Queen Street West The center of the Canadian broadcast television and film industry, the neighborhood of Queen Street West has more than its share of artsy cache in a clutch of contemporary galleries, hip bars and restaurants, and trendy boutiques.
  • Art Gallery of Ontario The turn-of-the-century museum holds the largest collection of Canadian art in the world, with more than 80,000 works from the first century A.D. to today, including a sculpture center dedicated to the work of Henry Moore. Especially impressive is the new glass-fa?ade by Frank Gehry on Dunda Street West.

Our favorite hotel: Hotel Victoriais a century-old grand dame with a modern interior in central Toronto (hotelvictoria-toronto.com; doubles from $130).?

#4?PARIS, FRANCE
Millions of U.S. travelers flood the city of Paris every year to walk the romantic cobblestone streets of the Latin Quarter, kiss on the pedestrian bridges over the River Seine, marvel at the Gothic facade of old Notre Dame, or ride the elevator up the elegant iron legs of the Eiffel Tower for a grandstand view of the City of Light.? And then, of course, there's the food? whether it's nibbling a fresh baguette from a riverside bakery or tucking into steak b?arnaise at a tiny Montmartre bistro, everything tastes better in Paris.

3?must-see attractions for first-timers in Paris:
  • Explore the Latin Quarter It's hard not to fall in love with Paris's famous Latin Quarter. Whether you're sipping espresso at the Caf? de Flore (once the squatting grounds of Simone de Beauvoir and John Paul Sartre), listening to jazz at the underground club on Rue de la Huchette,? or browsing books at Shakespeare & Company, you'll soon be lost in the nostalgia of Paris's storied past.
  • Visit the Eiffel Tower You don't have to visit the Eiffel Tower to appreciate its 1,050-foot-high majesty of iron; it can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. But you should: The lines can be long and the surrounding area mobbed with tourists, but it's worth a ride to the top to see the City of Light from above ($11 to the 2nd floor observatory, $18 to the top).
  • Wander Jardin des Tuileries and check out the Louvre (if you can get in)Mus?e du Louvre is by far the most famous museum in Paris (if not in all of Europe), so don't be surprised if you wait for hours to explore the Egyptian collection or for that glimpse of Mona Lisa behind glass (entrance $13 per person, closed Tuesdays). If you tire of the wait, don't distress: the grounds of the Louvre Palace and its adjoining Jardin de Tuileries is one of the most beautiful spots in Paris.
3?must-see attractions for return visitors in Paris:
  • Notre Dame The cathedral of Notre Dame on the ?le de la Cit? is something to behold even if you're just passing by on your way to the Latin Quarter. Inside, the soaring Gothic chamber of stained glass, pillars, stone crosses, and statues of the saints high above the grand altar are a treasure that the city holds dear.
  • Rodin Museum The Rodin Museum is elegant in its simplicity, especially when compared with the Louvre Palace across the River Seine (entrance, $8). The 18th-century mansion of Hotel Biron holds a collection of Rodin's greatest work inside and out in the estate's gardens where visitors can explore and ponder for a while with The Thinker and other sculptures.
  • Nightlife in La Bastille Still an icon of the French Revolution, the neighborhood of La Bastille is a nightlife playground for the youth of Paris, chockful of bistros, bars, music venues, and tiny nightclubs, especially along Rue de la Roquette.

Our favorite hotel: But wait, what about the Montmartre? Well, if you take our advice, you'll be staying in Montmartre at Ermitage Hotel Sacre-Coeur, a 12-room B&B set inside a turn-of-the-century apartment building that's within walking distance to that beautiful white cathedral on the hill, the Sacre-Coeur (ermitagesacrecoeur.fr; doubles from $130).?

#3 SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO
Yes, it's a U.S. territory, but Puerto Rico can feel like a world apart. The laidback atmosphere of San Juan with its narrow cobblestone streets and pastel-color houses will make any traveler feel at home, especially after a night in Old San Juan, where young and old drink, play music, and dance to salsa music until the early hours.

3?must-see attractions for first-timers in San Juan:
  • Nightlife in Old San Juan It can get rowdy late at night in Old San Juan, especially on weekends, when everyone and their uncle mobs the streets for a wandering bar crawl with drinks in hand. But there's no better time to drink up the culture alongside the locals?join in with the locals at bars like Bodega Chic and Nono's and possibly get silly enough to participate in a sing-along in Plaza del Mercado (a.k.a. La Placita).
  • El Morro This beautiful old citadel fort commands a sweeping view of the Caribbean Sea on the northwest tip of Puerto Rico and has held its own against time and the island's seaborne enemies since the 16th century (entrance $3).
  • Beaches of Condado The seaside neighborhood of Condado has the most popular beaches in San Juan proper, a stretch of golden-sand shore on the eastern side of the city. Arrive early on the weekends to claim your beach-towel territory against the droves of resort guests and local families.
3?must-see attractions for return visitors in San Juan:
  • Salsa Dancing at the Nuyorican Caf? Hidden off an alley inside a former Spanish convent, this tiny nightclub has been an Old San Juan institution for decades, renowned for its jazz music and weekend salsa dancing. A eclectic crowd of locals and tourists brave the crowds on the weekend to test their moves on the dance floor; if the line is too long or too tedious, pop over to Rumba, a newer salsa club down the street.
  • Catedral de San Juan Bautista The second oldest Cathedral in North America is a rather modest Spanish colonial structure. Inside, you'll find the hallowed chambers of stained glass and statues worthy of worship (and the tomb of Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon underneath).
  • Day trip to Vieques Island In a paradise like Puerto Rico, where do the locals go to vacation? The answer is the castaway island of Vieques, a 45-minute ferry ride from the port of Farajado on the east coast. The main town of Isabella is quiet and pretty, but the real reason for the trip is the pristine beaches on the south coast (be sure to pack a picnic basket? there are few places to eat nearby the beaches).

Our favorite hotel: Numero Uno Guesthouse is a darling 15-room inn right by the beach in the Ocean Park neighborhood of San Juan (numero1guesthouse.com; doubles from $99).?

#2?LONDON, ENGLAND
London certainly hasn't lost its regal charms in the long march to modernity. And because the city is a gateway for further excursions into Europe, millions of travelers spend at least a day or two visiting the historic sites on the red double-decker lorries, attending theatre performances by Britain's greats, and enjoying a cool English pint (or three) while munching on fish-and-chips at one of the city's famous pubs. Just remember to mind your manners and your wallet: The British pound reigns supreme, at nearly twice the value of the U.S. dollar.

3?must-see attractions for first-timers in London:
  • Royal Highlights: Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, and the Tower of London The throne of the British Empire and the city's most famous historic sites are clustered within a short walk of one another in central London. Commoners can tour Buckingham Palace from July through September (or sneak a peek through the gates any other time of year); just down the road is Westminster Abbey, the iconic Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. A short cab ride along the Thames brings you to the Tower of London (which arguably offers the best tour and a chance to see the Crown Jewels).
  • West-End Theaters London's West End neighborhood is the Broadway of England, known affectionately as "Theaterland." New London Theatre and Queen's Theatre are two great venues for new plays performed by Britain's greatest thespians, while smaller theaters like the Noel Coward Theatre often showcase well-known plays by British playwrights (like, say, Noel Coward), including new productions of Shakespeare plays.
  • British Museum It was once said that the sun never set on the British Empire, and this museum dedicated to British history is true to that globe-spanning scope, with a collection that ranges from the armor of William the Conqueror to the 19th- and 20th-century colonial history of British ambitions.
3?must-see attraction for return visitors in London:
  • Tate Modern Converted from a riverside power station on the Thames, the Tate Modern is a marvel of contemporary architecture and one of the most impressive art museums in the world, famous for its enormous (and often interactive) art installations and a collection of modern art from the early 1900s to today (entrance is free).
  • East End Nightlife The once-gritty East End has been gentrified into the new epicenter of London nightlife?a haven of hip pubs, edgy art galleries, and nouveau restaurants, especially in the neighborhoods of Shoreditch and Hoxton.?
  • The London Eye Who wouldn't want to get into a Ferris wheel that soars up over 400 feet in the air? Don't worry, the wheel moves at a turtle speed and the bird's-eye views over London from the enclosed-glass observatories are absolutely spectacular ($24 per person).

Our favorite hotel: Umi Hotel is a simple and fashionable hotel comprised of adjoining 150-year-old townhouses in London's Notting Hill neighborhood (umihotellondon.co.uk; doubles from $99).?

#1?CANCUN, MEXICO
Cancun remains the No. 1 top destination for U.S. travel abroad, thanks to cheap flights from the States, 14 miles of beaches, and carnival-style nightlife that transforms the Z-shaped islet off the Yucatan Peninsula into a 24-hour party scene for college students every Spring Break.? But if you think this former Mayan trading city is just a sloppy boozefest on the beach, you haven't experienced the real Cancun.

3?must-see attractions for first-timers in Cancun:
  • Sun, Sand, and Waves at Playa Tortugas and Playa Delfines The beaches of Playa Tortugas and Playa Delfines offer the full-spectrum of the Cancun beach scene: Playa Tortugas is a festive party beach with calm, tranquil water and bungalow restaurants/bars under the palms; Playa Delfines is an escapist beach with white sand for travelers looking to get away from the crowds (and perhaps catch a few waves).
  • Day Trip to the Mayan Ruins Integrated into the downtown area, the plaza ruins of El Ray remind travelers of the city's ancient history as a Mayan trading port and give the urban layout a uniquely mythic look (and a kitschy cache to bankroll tourist dollars). But for a more immersive experience, take a day trip drive down Riviera Maya to the beachfront ruins of Tulum and the jungle temples of Coba (they're far less crowded and closer than Chichen Itza).
  • Coco Bongo It would be a shame to leave Cancun without a glimpse of the most explosive, extravagant club the party city has to offer. Coco Bongo is a temple of excess to ridiculous proportions?a massive 1,800-person nightclub with nightly trapeze acts, rock-star impersonators, a rainbow blitz of roving spotlights, and hundreds of partiers dancing to DJ-spun hits on any platform they can climb onto.
3?must-see attractions for return visitors in Cancun:
  • Isla Mujeres This tiny island off the coast of Cancun is a quiet escape from the madness of the mainland. The palm-shaded beaches are perfect for laying out in the sun after an intimate lunch at one of the island's restaurants, and the azure water seems made for an afternoon swim.
  • Dipping Into the Cenotes The rain forest of the Yucatan peninsula creates a unique experience for travelers looking for adventure in the form of sunken cenotes?subterranean rivers and lakes that you can access via rappelling into caverns.
  • Underwater Museum of Art Sure, Cancun and the Riviera Maya have plenty of offshore dive sites. But if your tank skills are up to par, one of the coolest spots to scuba dive is the Underwater Museum of Art, designed by British artist Jason de Caires Taylor, which, true to its name, is an underwater museum of sculptures laid out at the bottom of the sea. New to scuba? No problem. Scuba Cancun can set you up with a beginner's diving lesson and then a museum dive for $80.

Our favorite hotel: The Royal Islander is a beachfront resort with humdrum d?cor but a great location (and a seaside pool) in the Zona Hotelera of Cancun (royalresorts.com; Doubles from $120).
