Retro Game Network | The New Retro Gaming Community ...

Anyone who owned ANY of the consoles that Nintendo has brought us over the years, has no doubt at one point or another, opened up a copy of ?Nintendo Power? magazine. Whether it was during the NES/SNES days, a little later in the Ultra 64 and VR32 (Nintendo 64 and Virtual Boy, respectably), or even more currently with the Gamecube and Wii, chances are that everyone that is reading this has picked up an issue. Well, all we can say, is that it has been quite a ride, but the car is beginning to come to a complete stop.

Earlier this week, it had been rumored that Nintendo Power, a magazine that has been around since the late 1980s, was planning on ending the publication. Today, sadly, it has been officially confirmed. Nintendo has not renewed their licensing agreement with Future Publishing, and Nintendo Power, after 24 years, will be coming to an end. Senior editor Chris Hoffman, stated via Twitter, that he and his staff are going to do everything that they can, to make their final issues memorable. There has been nothing said about when the last issue would hit newsstands, or if the magazine could possibly continue as an online publication only. Currently, Nintendo Power has a monthly subscriber base of approximately 475,000.

Don?t get me wrong, I am going to miss it, even though I have not been a subscriber since the post 16-bit era. It was always one of those comforts that, was always just ?there?. But you have to realize this: Magazines, at least in paper form, are slowly starting to go away. News style publications are going away thanks to the Internet, and magazines that are going strong are all beginning to go the digital way, with issues being available online, or downloadable on tablet computers. (You?d think magazines that went the way of the Kindle would at least reduce the cost since printing costs are no longer an issue!) How many of you guys out there still subscribe? Would you continue subscribing if the publication went digital only? Do you buy vintage issues for posterity?

(8-22 Update: According to Nintendo of America?s Facebook feed, it has been confirmed that the December, 2012 issue of the magazine will in fact be the last. They have also said that if you have any questions or inquires about the cease of publication, that you can visit http://www.nintendopower.com/customerservice/)
