A riot of colour, costumes and quirky decorations was on show in Helston on Saturday, as the town?s carnival parade wound through the streets.

Before the parade the judging took place at Helston Rugby Club, with the Bulwark and Friends Association picking up the overall winner?s prize for their red, white and blue bedecked float celebrating Britain?s Olympic success.

The parade set off from the rugby club, led by Cruella DeVil and Helston Town Band dressed as Dalmatians, making its way through Meneage Street and finishing at the Gryll?s Monument in Coinagehall Street. The carnival was organised this year by Emma Wooderson of the Epworth Hall, which was part of the harvest fair committee. She said: ?It went really well. There were four or five floats and three groups of walkers, with three or four individual walkers.?

She added that with a lack of advertising about the event, she was pleased with how many people turned out to take part and watch. Also taking part in the event were scarecrows that had been made at workshops in the town over the last four weeks, harking back to Harvest Fair of 15 years ago.

The scarecrows were walked as part of the carnival parade and Emma hoped that more children would take part in the workshops next year.

Results: best pub float, Blue Anchor; best large float, Breage and Porthleven Brownies; best small float, Bulwark and Friends Association; best children?s group walkers: First Helston Scouts Group; best individual adult, Pearl Merton; best children?s walker, boy dressed as a green bug; overall winner, Bulwark and Friends Association.
